Probably not, I didn't spend long messing about with it ;)

I was able to draw a laser with it automatically sized to the distance between the caster and an enemy. Added with the destructible body thing I wrote earlier, I could make the laser literally melt through enemies :)

So many ideas, so little graphical talent to accompany them...

That's what artists are for!

It's rough, I haven't had a whole lot of practice with copyPixels(), and the bitmapData to NAPE body process looks kinda weird in an enterframe. Space to fire the laser, left/right to turn, up/down to accelerate

So I wrote a little post mortem for Concerned Joe if anyone's interested. It's a bit long though, but read on if you're curious about how much it sold for, what went right, what went wrong etc.. etc..

Heh, right now I'm trying to "MAKE A GAME WITH EVERYTHING IN IT!!!11". Maybe at the 16 month period in July I'll realize it's no use trying to complete it. Until then, OPTIMIZE, OPTIMIZE, OPTIMIZE...

Very interesting post, 4ur. I'm amazed that it sold for $13k, that's very inspiring. It was a fantastic game but I didn't realize that it's entirely possible for a game to reach well above the $10k mark.

Thanks for the kind words Archon! Glad you liked it.

But if you thought *that* was inspiring, this will probably be jaw-dropping, it's a bit old though:

I think it's funny that people who knew me before my name change still call me Archon. :)

Happy new year guys. I am working on revamping my LD22 entry a little bit. Check it out

Left: before
Right: after

Also I think this is the year we should do a programmer collab of some kind. Making a game perhaps? Maybe a game that's well suited to a bunch of programmers working on it. I am up for ideas! Anyone else willing to consider it?

Many programmers working on the same game is same as many cooks in the kitchen, it doesn't really work unless you are professionals and know what you are doing.

You can solve pretty much any problem you may have with AS3 by consulting the AS3 Language reference.

I definitely disagree with you, and I think that's a bad mindset. I don't really care who is a "professional". I know theres a number of really talented people in this reg lounge. I think if we all invested a little bit of time each week we could eventually make something neat or at least learn something from each others coding styles. I imagine using Git for version control. I have a number of unused private repos on github. I think theres a number of game types or genres that lend themselves well to having multiple devs. Something randomly generated? Sandboxxy?

Id be all for anyone trying to create a project that could work in a collaborative setting and with the talent in the lounge. Something sandboxy would be cool. If anything for the sake of playing together for the sake of learning or just dusting off techniques or ideas...

Also on a related note, ive been mildly following whats going on at CES this week, for those unfamiliar with it, basically just an electronics expo of sorts, one of the larger ones of its kind.

There was these little things called Cubelets making a debut there and the sandboxy feel of it seemed relevant to bryce's thoughts. sorta.. maybe... anyway here it is regardless

Could any of you fancy Flash experts explain to me why buttons briefly flicker when you go from an 'over state' to a 'down state'? It's irritating.

Back to making Flash games after a long time seeing as my ambitions were finally possible. Currently doing this as a personal project:
http://wolfos.org/resources/flash/FlashT est.html

What I've got cooked up for school is a bit too much for Flash I'm afraid. Got a mocap studio for that project as well, last time I saw, Stage3D didn't perform really well with character animations.

So I'm learning MATLAB this semester, and I nearly failed the first homework cuz I typecasted all my variables x.x I realized I was in the wrong language when I extended Sprite and thought about it for a minute...

OOP, my love, we will be together again soon.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2012-01-13 21:33:45

My original plan for this semester was to take a Java class at a local community college (my first mistake)--I had the prerequisite waived so I could take the second-level class (the highest offered), and it was still unbearably easy and trivial.

Today I dropped the class and I'm going to apply to receive an independent study hour, which I'll use to read Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach in its entirety, research and apply various programming techniques I've been interested in recently (particle filtering, image processing, etc.). I think it's pretty neat, actually. For once I'll take a programming class that will benefit me--mainly because I'm the one writing it.

I have to make a weekly schedule for myself and get it approved, then I'm all set. Does anyone have any neat ideas for what I could possibly do with this time? I have plenty ideas but I'd like to hear some other interesting suggestions.

Why typecast? I see AS devs do that all the time, but it's much more convenient to just declare them with the datatype ready.

var bananas:DisplayObject = new DisplayObject();

So convenient, I know many languages but only 2 different syntaxes.

Whatever it's called, bro. That's what I meant. MATLAB isn't too keen on int, Number, and Math.round()

Arch, this thesis was really cool for AI: http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/research/ga meai/theses/Stefan%20Wender%20-%20Integr ating%20Reinforcement%20Learning%20into%
20Strategy%20Games.pdf

Maybe plan a day a week to work on some prototype that eventually becomes something awesome at the end of the semester. Like a neural network, or one do those populations that grows itself into a society

Well I guess there isn't as much interest as I thought there would be around doing a reg lounge collaboration. The offer still stands if anyone wants to reach out to me and offer some ideas. Maybe people are just busy right now. I'm pretty busy with my full-time job and doing projects on the side, but pulling 80 hour weeks is not a big deal to me. Also I have no social life, so that helps too.

I feel slightly offended by how this is a serious, touching and very inspiring documentary, and what he saw in it was a fictional half-hour comedy.

Sooooo for FIRST Robotics this season I was planning on doing a bunch of fancy image processing to track targets to shoot balls into, but today I found out that the libraries given out by FIRST, developed by WPI already do everything for you.

It does particle filtering for you. PARTICLE FILTERING. How do you teach kids important concepts related to programming if you just write it all for them?

It's like giving a small child one of those shape puzzles then forcing them to watch you as you put the white circle in the circle hole, the blue square in the square hole, the red triangle in the triangle hole, etc..

The worst part is I've been developing some awesome software to track the targets, but unfortunately everyone else will be using the libraries, which are, of course, going to be better than whatever I come up with considering a professional software developer was paid by WPI to write the libraries, and if we use my code (which I'll still develop independently but won't be used on our robot) we'll be at a huge competitive disadvantage.

What a disappointing day. I feel obsolete. Now I need to think of something cooler that there ISN'T code written for.
