Anybody wanna play? I really do. JOIN ME! The free dlc for lbp (costumes) are awesome. So glad they're free.

Ahh crap. I was going to buy it yesterday, but my bank took out $35 becasue my account's been dry for ages. How much stuff can you create, is it limited? If I wanted to make an elephant out of rubber and strap a jetpack to it's back, can I do it?

It's out at least for the people who bought it in the package with the Adobe Suite or whatever you call it. I don't know if it's out otherwise solely. The new features are pretty cool [my friend has it], although I have to wonder to what extent they really help coders and game-makers out.

Experimental gameplay

Engine concept for my next flash project

Arrows to move/jump, space to pick up and place down orbs. You win when you find the text that says "you win".

Also, lag report?

(you need flash player 10, i took advantage of its new features)

It's unique and very advanced in terms of it's programming architecture, however it is not a good game for newgrounds. If I want to play cool FPS games I'll buy one for 40 euro and spend months playing it because it is enjoyable as it was done by a large team of professionals. On newgrounds however, I'm not going to expect the games to be in 3D such as this one, all I want is say, a nice 2D platformer that can stay enjoyable for a dozen of minutes. I admire this guy for creating such a complex game in flash, but it's not what newgrounders are looking for. He made the professional leap to go into 3D, but the quality of the game in terms of fun went down.

It's like when you're buying an nvidia graphics card. You can go for the 8800 GTS which is a great card as it is the most advanced of the 80's series. If you choose to go with a 9300 GS instead, it is in one sense superior because it belongs to the 90's series which utilizes more advanced architecture, but it is inferior to the 8800GTS because the quality isn't as good. I think that's a pretty good analogy to comparing fun 2D games to those kind of 3D games. The controls were kind of sluggish, the gameplay wasnt at its best, overall it just wasn't fun.

Bah, if you're going to be a nerd, do it right toast :P. The GTS sucks, the only good version is the 512mb with the g92 chip.

Glalies Game

Ingenious once you get the hang of it, but that takes quite a while. How did you do that? Is it just a bitmap that you keep redrawing or something?

It was an analogy to NG fun 2D games and less fun 3D games. The 8800GTS alone without SLI won't let you play crysis on highest settings, but it will satisfy the little gamers who only play WoW or equivalent games in terms of graphic requirements. In this analogy I compare the 90's series to 3D games, where something like the 9800GX2 is the expensive PC games you buy for 40 euros, and the 9300GS is the free 3D games on NG that while they are more advanced in terms of architecture than the 80's series (2D games), they are less fun to play.

Re: Andagel
It's not encouraging in the slightest that people aren't praising one of the eventual results of Sandy and Papervision finally getting released on Newgrounds. Time was that we were all complaining that games with real meat and gameplay weren't getting the praise they deserved compared to games with all the high end graphics, and now even games with all the 3D features that would be unprecedented more than two years ago are now being slated.

Bodes not very well for any game programmer - we've got an openly hostile audience against us here. But we knew that anyway. No one likes games on Newgrounds.

Re: Glaiel's Game
Averaging 27 fps. May I suggest you make the player visible (possibly in red) when it enters shadows?

Ya, in the full game there will be a learning curve so you aren't flung right into this level (even though its an easy puzzle). I have also yet to program all the interactive objects.

I did use bitmaps for collision purposes, but the lighting was just using a pixel bender filter as a blend mode.

masks are for noobs. Also I mario galaxy might have been an influence but in reality my influence came from me making that graphical filter and going "Hmm what can I make with this...."

Glaiel, I'm getting around 20-22 fps. It's a cool idea, although the contrast of color combined with the constantly jiggling light movement does hurt my eyes a bit, and it looks a little weird like that too.

Even crysis runs faster than your flash lol. Btw apparently in the future, Adobe programs will make more use of the graphics card instead of the processor. That means extremely high performance and more options to people who make 3D games in flash.

Glaiel, Adobe flash player checker tells me I have version 10,0,1,218 installed but I can't play your game. All I see is a black gradiented circle and a white background.

by that time I won't be using flash anymore and will just be doing all this stuff in c++ anyway... it sucks that I hit the wall for CS4 a month after it came out...

I am working on making it smoother. Its not supposed to be a fast paced game but I still don't like the lag (even though I got it to a point where my computer runs it fast).

It is pixel bender, and the blend mode is not only used to make the graphics like that but also to make the collision map. I'm probably going to go through and time individual actions to see what's causing the lag but for now I have to write an essay. After I'm done doing this game in flash I think I'm going to concentrate on learning openGL. Flash is nice but like I'm hitting its limits really early on. Wanna know why that 3D game didn't do too well? It tried to pass the limits of flash. It's a well programmed game, but flash doesn't make it fun.

It sucks that I have to make sacrifices to the game to make it fun. Anyway sacrifice number 1 is to avoid making levels with all those lights. I'll put directional lights to better use I guess when I get them programmed. And I'll make sure to offer a download version. Maybe make the browser version a smaller resolution so it runs faster. Dunno, I got a lot of work ahead of me.
