Techno Anger

Speaking of being angry at technology, I just ran into a problem with flash where some fonts when bolded as dynamic text will flat out disappear from the stage........ I almost went completely insane, but luckily bomtoons somehow knew about this problem with flash. I have no idea how I would realize the problem without someone telling me...what an obscure glitch... =_=

Making a website

Progress is being made... slowly. The graphics suck big time though. Might post some screen shots when I'm further in. Haven't got hosting or domain yet. I figured it would be best to actually have content. I've got a black and purple colour scheme going for pages but it's all a bit jumbled at the moment.

Also: Google Chrome's spell checker is annoying sometimes. For instance you can't add words tgo the dictionary and it doesn't have English spelling (Unless I haven't checked the options.)

Flash is pretty damn glitchy when you get more advanced with it. For example, the browse function only returns a filename, not a filepath, so it's completely useless. And restrictions mean you can't acces local user files >:(.

Tracing

I normally just trace ("yup") or something to confirm somethings working. But my flash is spewing errors, so it have to trace something immensly long like "floppynoppyhilafapilafacation" :S.

Ugh, I'm not too excited about it. I mean sure, the first one was good, but in the end its just another video game parody. Most everything has been done before and abused.

Flash Rituals

broccoli=true;
snarfblat=100;
soriasis=new Array();

Lmao I do that too sometimes. Usually I name my variables as an abbreviated version, like speed would be "spd" or even just "s" when im coding small files. It's kinda messy when you start having one letter variables in big projects cause you might use them twice without realising. For for() loops I always use "i" for some reason, like i guess many of you do. When I have a lot of loops I just go for stuff like "j", "ij", "li", "lj" etc, or if for example i want to spawn a loop of blocks, I'll name it "ib", for "i" + "b" of "blocks".

My code isn't very tidy I guess, but now for example that I'm making a game where there's a big amount of different maps, i made a different layer for the map arrays where i have:
map1 = new Object();
map1.row1 = [0,0,1,0,0];
map1.row2 = [0,1,0,1,0];
etc.
then:
map1.map = [map1.row1,map1.row2 etc]
maps.push(map1);

not the most efficient way of doing it but at least i can edit stuff easily.

Neato, I think I came up with a rational explanation of the dual cores for you. :) Antivirus' software always run "in the background", that's why it really slows down your computer. With two cores, the second core can completely take care of the stuff running in the background, thus, smoothing everything else. Also, asked my brother and he said having a 1.6 GHZ dual core kind of equalled a 3.2 GHZ unicore processor. :)

Sounds hawt. :) I'd change a thing or two, but it's just about personal opinion.

Like going for AMD.

Response to The Flash 'Reg' Lounge 2008-09-18 19:17:54

I've heard of Asustek but this was the first time i heard someone mention value select too. i don't really know all the parts like the palm of my hand but I had a long talk with the guy at the computer store and I think that this is the best for my needs. Before going to the store I was pretty convinced I'd get an AMD processor, as I read an article that explains in detail why the AMD system works more efficiently than intel, but I realised it was written in 2005 lol. Apparently Intel have now greatly improved their processors, ill still have a little talk with the guy before finally buying it. he seems to like intel though.

If you have things you would change by all means let me know. I'm still open for suggestions. Overall I'm very happy with those specs. I can't wait until I play Crysis with that beast graphic card and processor.

also another thing about AMD processors - you can't overclock them, can you? I'm still drooling at the overclocked intel 3.5ghz QUAD-CORE processor as seen in the HP Blackbird 002. you could keep that computer for 5 years without changing any parts and still be able to play all the newest games. Also, another great thing about the blackbird is that it's extremely easy to replace parts. It's a huge case and a huge motherboard and you don't even need any tools to open up the case, you just click some button and you can slide it off. The guy at the store said that what he does is that every time a new part, like a better version of a graphic card comes to the market, he buys it and resells his older one. It's a good technique but you always have to keep up with the updates.

Since my computer is starting to get relatively old, ill have to cut down a lot on the price. However, if you buy new parts like a graphic card every 4 months or something, you're not gonna lose so much money cause you'll still be able to re-sell it for nearly what you bought it for. however when you don't replace anything for 2 or 3 years, you're gonna have to pretty much change anything without being to re-sell efficiently.

Quirks

I took over for someone else who was coding a game and I had to redo the whole thing from scratch.

I understand people have to start somewhere but the code I found in the game was completely ridiculous. None of the variables had sensible names. Everything was named a, aa, ab,ba, ag, ga, sa or other 2 letter names like that. I hate it when people don't use sensible variable names.

Vista may be a lot prettier, but it's also incredibly slower.. you need over 1gb of RAM for Vista whereas you can happily run XP with 256mb (although that wouldn't work well with current games + software). Right now I'm using approximately 200mb of RAM and all I have open is Google Chrome and that's with just this page open :/ I have 3gb though so I'm not exactly bothered, but 3gb with XP would be overkill * 1000000.

Uniiii!!!
I'm super excited now >_< *wets self*. I got a welcome CD today which had nothing on it practically (a whole CD with a 13mb flash presentation on it, nice waste of 700mb of space), but I did notice there was an unused .as file on there which had a "Hello World" test thing, funny :D I think they must have done that by mistake because I can't find any references or usage of it in the flash presentation ;o

Agreed. The new Vista 64-bit OS is installed on this computer, and it BSOD's at least once every start-up session -- Windows suggested that it was the fault of the graphics driver. LIES.

It's also made Flash, Firefox, and Photoshop crash and hang more times than other older generations of Windows that it's been installed on. Seriously, nearly every program that I use in everyday life has died at least once... I swear, my productivity has worsened by having Vista as opposed to XP or the good old Windows 2000.

In short, Vista sucks... and this is coming from a person who's used only Windows for their entire life so far. What a disappointment.

Overclocking a processor cuts its lifetime short. (Not by much, so don't get scared). But AMD being the small company it is, it doesn't have the amazing cooling technology that Intel posseses. So, altough I might be very biased towards AMD, I know this is its flaw. :)

Also, as far as I know, Intel hasn't made any changes to the ammount of busses' in their between-core processing, but that's just as far as I know. And If I'm correct, AMD would still pwn. :P You

You CAN overclock AMD, though. You're only taking a higher risk than when overclocking Intel. :P

I did this once, though. I really needed to overclock my AMD Athlon 1.59 GHZ, managed to get it to 1.7 GHZ (almost). But to be sure it wasn't gonna burn, I opened my case, and connected an extra fan (a normal fan) pointing towards the CPU. Everything went fine. And nothing exploded. :D But I feared the worst, so I left it at it's poort 1.59 GHZ D:

Nah Toastie, the computer's fine. Aside from what DarkMana already pointed, though. And what changes I would make is probably because I'm kind of biased towards other brands, and tend not to trust brands that I've never heard of before. :D Cheers.

Windows UE (an edited version of vista) works with 32 MB RAM. :D Or was it 64? Can't remember. D: Still, I think all that XP asks for is 128, right?

Also, I don't know if this is just me, but where I'm teaching flash they have windows vista. And whenever I go to edit a movieclip (like, double click on it) it takes AGES to open it up. D:

Making a website
Oh man, I REALLY want to make a website, so I can post up all my stuff, and have a site that is a showcase of my work.
Only problem is, I have no idea how to set one up, I really want one with a domain name and not "freewebs, freewebsites" etc., I want to custom design the background/buttons/layout etc, and the most imporatant problem, I have no moneyz :(
But I would love to have one so much.

New Computer
LOL, I've been looking for a new computer for a couple months now, my friend built me a kickass one a week ago, and now I'm getting it on Monday. Unfortunately, it has Vista on it. I might re-install it with windows. 500gb hard drive ftw, my current one was 20gb! Thank god for external hard drives.
I'll post the specs up later, but my current computer is SOOOO shit.
Flash ALWAYS unexpectedly quits.

School/NG Forums Prime Time
Here's something that really pisses me off, and I absolutely can't help it.
Because of school, I get very little time on NG, about four or so hours after school including homework, and some time on weekends.
Then, there is something I like to call NG prime time.
Because of my time zone, being in Australia and all, there aren't much people online.
But when I'm at school, the forums flood with posts. Its probably just how long I'm away from NG, but I miss out on so much still, It just really annoys me.

I've always wanted to be a regular on the flash reg lounge, but I don't think that will ever happen, due to the time I'm actually online. Everytime I go away, liek, 4 more pages are made...
I'd love to be a reg, but... oh well :(

It's not necessarily a better way to work - they're two completely different ways of declaring functions. Declaring them as variables means they're dynamic, so you can overwrite it whenever you need to without throwing up a compile error:

var myFunction:Function = function():void{}; myFunction = function():void{ blah; };

Obviously it's not quite as idiot-proof and clean as declaring methods the old fashioned way, but it's a perfectly valid way of managing stuff, especially if you're passing the function as a parameter or something.

As for making a website, I suggest doing whatever you can to make some money (about $50) then get a cheap host + domain. If it's a personal portfolio where it's just your work and maybe a blog, you'll get only maybe a few hundred views a week, so you could set that up for a low price; the internet is quite cheap for us lowlings :D The whole making the web site thing, I suggest you learn php, html and javascript; it's fun and really quite easy. It's also helpful as a flash developer to know those languages.

Website: Making a basic website is extremely easy. It's when you start wanting more features that problems begin to arise and you need to have some knowledge.

Hardware: If my old laptop (which died) doesn't get fixed soon I'm gonna buy a new laptop with:

Built in web cam
3Gb RAM
Vista but I'll be UPgrading to XP (I get lost in Vista and I prefer XP anyways)
Not sure about the other specs but I'm fairly sure that it's 160 hard drive or something.

It's £500 with security so it's an alright deal.

Colons: I've decided to start using colons instead of bold text. I have a thing for colons. :D

Indeed, making a website which requires not a whole lot of user interactivity is incredibly easy. For people who want to have a site, but don't have the time/creativity/can't be arsed to make one themselves, blogs like wordpress are also great, they have loads of customization options.
