I have found the very same thing at Uni. its just amazing how much fun it is to be around people who share the same goals and likes. The best part of it all is they're compitant in what ever they are majoring in. (I come from a country town out in the sticks of Australia, where computers are seen mostly as 'That thing which does limewire' or 'on of them magic boxes thats like the tv') So its nice to find people who view programming as an enjoyable task.
