Campaign to kill laggy Flash ads

Sorry for the possible double post, but I just saw something which pissed me off.

I'm trying to watch a video on GT, but the clip keeps shuddering because of some lame-ass Nokia advert which seems to be taking up all of my CPU. I try refreshing the page, but (surprise) it's still there! Even the old trick of zooming right in on a boring bit and changiny quality to low doesn't work, because all of the massive filter whoring. My viewing experience is ruined.

I get that adverts need to shout out and get your attention, but I'm sure they can do it without killing anything else on the page. I mean, given that almost all video, games and animation on the internet comes in Flash Player nowadays, is it too much to ask that there should be some standard for peoples ads not taking more processing than your average particle engine?

Anyway, I'm boycotting Nokia out of irritation. I shall continue to use my Nokia phone since I bought it several years ago, but they're not seeing any more money from me. Unless they make it really, really good. Or stylish.

Seriously though, does anyone else really want to do something about all of these selfish, CPU hogging ads we're seeing? It's becoming a serious problem.

yes, its annoying, that you are tring to play a flash game and a stupid flash advert that has a video in hogs the space and ruins the experience, soon they will crash the computers, sometimes they cause my interent to crash and loose the progress that i had made, it sucks, how far will these ads go, sometimes i dont know the different between what is real and what is not, such as, you have an email in your inbox on the hotmail, i clicked it and it was an advert, so i never check it now and have over 1000 emails in the inbox. also another example is somtimes they make annoying sounds that give you a headache and some even dirupt the look of the website. it sucks and there should be a a change.

how about a TV channel that has about 90% of the time adverts and you get paid for watching TV, that would be cool and then less ads should appear, something like this on the internet would be good, go to a website and a load of ads pop up, then for the rest of the day on that website no more ads ever pop up!

I was a bit pissed off that 2 of the bands I wanted to see pulled out (slipknot and a7x) but oh well, nothing mattered after rage :D

Waah my game has only got like 50,000 views across the internet :( I thought it would do a little better than that after a week, but oh well I guess it could be worse! Has anyone got any tips for getting more views, apart from "make a better game"? :P

If I got that much it would be amazing. The most I've ever got is under 1500.

CPU Hogging Ads

I agree. I hate it when ad companies hires someone who have done some flash in the past but have no idea that ads are a bit different. In Flash ADS you should never use filters and your FPS should be MAX 12.

There's a swedish newspaper (Aftonbladet) whose website is full of flash adverts that make the page take time to even scroll. I mean, come on!

One way I've found to prevent the lag is like this. First of all, I don't know if this works for all browsers but I'm using Opera and it seems to work there. Example: when I play games at nitrome it lags a little because of the ads. Not much, but it gets annoying. Basically, I resize the browser window to be about the same size as what I'm viewing, in this case the Nitrome game, and then scroll there so that only the game is visible in the browser window and not the ads. In Opera, the ads won't get drawn then and there is less lag.

This is, of course, more or less a theory but it seems to work for me.

I'd rather just use that AD Block thing. It blocks image based ads as well.

My dad has some weird firewall thing which just blocks all ads on all websites... kinda handy for flash ads as I agree, It can get very annoying if they lag your browser up. I'm more concerned about the people who don't know how laggy ads can be, ply your games / movies and think that you're the one who doesn't know how to put an efficient Flash together >.<

I think I could probably make a case fo selfish ads leeching revenue from in-game ads which never get a chance to show themselves.

Castle Crashing the Night

I had spoken to Tom and he said he's fine with me spamming this forum with a thread thats something like: flash forum castle crashers hub or something... I know its VG game related and probably doesnt belong here (like my birthday threads lmao) but I kinda just want to play with Flash Forum people than 12 yr olds who constantly scream into their headsets (see: GTA 4 Meet)

I figure having a thread where people could check in and join other people would be fun.
I'll get rid of the thread next week when i get back and the crazy and fan fare has died down.
