There was a crippling, exploitable problem with the DNS structure of the net that someone stumbled onto in March. So he kept it to himself, rather than tell the black hat community, and approached the major names (like Microsoft, Sun and the firewall systems), and they clandestinely fixed the problem, and announced that they fixed it a few days ago (it was along the lines of DNS spoofing so that you could visit other sites with different web-headers in your address bar - handy for phishing)

hes not new at all.. he has made a few games with bluebaby, of dead baby dressup fame, and gish. Web game of the year in 06?

If I remember correctly he only played a minor role in gish. Along the lines of a beta tester and probably gave edmund some suggestions considering his ties.

He's a cool guy though, he was the first "successful" author I made contacts with online.

Never played them. They invented bullet time, right?

What about if we want to jump on the 3D bandwagon, animation wise? By the time I get to Uni (2ish years) will Motion Capture have taken over?

totem destroyer
lmao, totem destroyer is a pretty fun game, very much too short though, but it totally doesn't deserve 4th place in "best of all time".

perhaps "best of all time" should be renamed "most popular right now but will eventually sink into a 3.9 score unless it actually is one of the best of all time"

Agreed.

Was it totem destroyer that brought up the controversy with using physics engine etc? Nonetheless, I thought it was an awesome game and played it for ages.

Well so am I, usually. But I normally get up 11-12 and go to bed 11-12. But I got up exceptionally early, and I'm on exceptionally late and its making my head spin :P
But I went for a 5minute walk and I've recovered now.

Am I missing, something here ? What game are you working on ?

I shall reluctantly post it then... First off, note that all the random shit around the sides are just my messy workings (especially the to do list on the right of the stage). I know about a hell of a lot of the bugs and I'm slowly sorting them all out, but please point them out to me anyway just incase I've missed some. (You might as well test it seeing as I'm posting it).

Also, there is a second enemy with an AK-47 that is off the stage but I couldn't be bothered to set it all up.

Controls

Arrows to move
WASD to dig in different directions
SPACE to plant a dynamite
e to start climbing up a wall - then use up and down to climb it.

Run over to the tied up miners to rescue them. Hit the enemy with an axe to kill him. or plant dynamite next to him. As he is facing opposite direction you can get up close to him but if you touch him he will run off, turn round and blow you to shit with his mighty bazooka.

Link.

Thanks. Can you just tell me something - if you chase the enemy continually, does he run through the wall and appear on the ground at the top? This bug is pissing me off as it should be fixed :P

PS. Forgot to mention all art is by Lochie.

When he falls through the hole he then appears at the top if he runs into the wall while in the hole

Sometimes the bazooka guy will just run straight down the hole, through the right wall and appear on the other side of the hole, yes.

It's looking good though, however I have seen it before. H ave you posted it before now?

I've noticed this phenomenon as well. It's like "OH HEY THIS IS GREAT 5 5 5 5 5" and then once people realize it's best of all time everyone's going, "OH SHIT NOT AS GOOD AS WOLLYLOLLIES 0 0 0 0 0 0"... it 's like those saturday morning cartoons where every is running from one end of the boat to the other to prevent it from sinking.

I've noticed this phenomenon as well.

Yeah I mean, it's a given that something Newgrounds and co. put out will hit the top 10 or Swain or Phillips, that's pretty much been the case for a few years now. But recently (I'd say within the last month or two) it's really become apparent where everyone will turn out in drones to vote 5 on something (perhaps just because everyone's a shut-in and has nothing better to do than look at the front page all summer which actually probably has some truth to it) but the top 10 has been changing drastically from week to week.

The first time it really annoyed me was with Monster's Dream, a well made movie, but at around a minute and half long and not very well developed, was a heinous example of 5'ing just because Tom made a post about it. That and I think "Flash Dancer" was another one that just wasn't deserving of the spot on the all-time list because of the whole 5 effect.

I think one of these days I'm gonna write a paper about the building effect of exposure, where views and score increase exponentially because the 5's outweigh the 0's once it's hit the front page and eventually a bloated score monster is created.

always behind schedule.

Isaac Newton was right when he said "What goes up, must come down."

You might want to have a looksee at my latest userpage post if you live in the UK and might want a job in Flash programming or illustration/animation. The company I work at is looking for a few of each to hire full time, its actually a really awesome place to work, everyone's pretty young and fun to work with. Plus they put a massive tab behind a local bar every 4 weeks, so if you like free alcohol, you'll like it here :D

It was $50k - $70k as a salary, which means $50,000 - $70,000. I'm not sure what animators or graphic artists here (US) make, but for a good programmer, that's kind of on the low side--though certainly livable and good enough for a "at least I like my job" type of job. Also, I believe it's about par for course when it comes to being an *Actionscript* programmer.

But like I said, I don't have a clue when it comes to the animation side of things.

New game contest, pretty flexible rules, except that you have to use some pre-made avatar library, which might just be some coders' dream come true. $10,000 first prize:

I think I might have mised out the 'starting' salary part. Thats the average starting salary, not the overall average. If you're good and work for a good (rich) company, you can get anything up to £80k ($160k) and maybe beyond.
