perhaps "best of all time" should be renamed "most popular right now but will eventually sink into a 3.9 score unless it actually is one of the best of all time"
I've noticed this phenomenon as well.
Yeah I mean, it's a given that something Newgrounds and co. put out will hit the top 10 or Swain or Phillips, that's pretty much been the case for a few years now. But recently (I'd say within the last month or two) it's really become apparent where everyone will turn out in drones to vote 5 on something (perhaps just because everyone's a shut-in and has nothing better to do than look at the front page all summer which actually probably has some truth to it) but the top 10 has been changing drastically from week to week.
The first time it really annoyed me was with Monster's Dream, a well made movie, but at around a minute and half long and not very well developed, was a heinous example of 5'ing just because Tom made a post about it. That and I think "Flash Dancer" was another one that just wasn't deserving of the spot on the all-time list because of the whole 5 effect.
I think one of these days I'm gonna write a paper about the building effect of exposure, where views and score increase exponentially because the 5's outweigh the 0's once it's hit the front page and eventually a bloated score monster is created.
