Well, maybe he has, I don't know.

That being said though, couldn't it be setup so that it would create a Rupee subdomain for the clock subdomain? Like a rupee.index on /clock whilst a user called clock would still have a index.html?

I dunno if that's how subdomains work. :P

Yah I asked that because he knew how the address were going to be formatted (as subdomains) so I was curious if he had had a look at it :)

It's not actually creating any subdomains I would guess.

I would assume it is using Apache Mod_rewrite to simulate subdomains which are really dynamic.

I would assume it has to do with how the user database is accessed, and that underscores make it all poopy.

I think the database is fine with it, but like AN said, subdomains or regular domains can't have underscores, so having a_user.newgrounds.com would cause problems with the web browser, and with mod_rewrite, I'm not 100% sure because it's dynamic and the subdomain doesn't actually exist, but it may not except underscores.

then don't write in it. it's quite simple. it's not to write about your crushes, or high school gossip, it's for flash artists. the term blog is tossed around too loosely...

I know it's months from now, but will the blog be something similar to MySpace or LiveJournal, where you can write something each day, or have people suscribe to daily feeds (RSS maybe?), so that people may be able to make entires about current projects, or just rant about whatever?

...Well, I guess like MySpace and LiveJournal, but less lame.

I'm kind of torn between this. Sure, it's great to be able to write more than just on the forum (and also write whatever's on my mind without having a flame war or having it locked and all), but sadly, I feel as if this will simply be another abused feature. Great and all for those of us who will actually use it for intended purposes, but something worries me that giving a blog to the average NG user will result in a lot of articles about "SDAKJLDSUJFJRTKJLRERGG5W5GWEGUHG89Y5G489N
V589UO5TV4H5VG420872413087243@@@@!!!!!!!1"

No, we will be force-changing names when the time comes, so it is better for users to voluntarily choose a name now. An example of a force change might be "-Joe-" becoming "Joe2" or something.

Damn, this name is what I am. It is universal and I don't feel like changing it :(

This is the first I've heard about a blog. Is there seriously going to be one?

I would write in it if so. I could chronicle my amazing flash progress, and my stat-whoring...

Talk about far-reaching policy.
3 things that I wonder about is;

1) How many people on the site total is this going to affect?
2) How exactly will NG go about changing EVERY name?
3) How long is this going to take?

Tom showed these stats:

74: users with --
156: users with __
1176: users that start with -
1251: users that end with -
528: users that start with _
738: users that end with _
187,142: users with _

2) How exactly will NG go about changing EVERY name?

Run a script, probably strip the characters that aren't allowed and if that's taken add a number at the end.

3) How long is this going to take?

Once they feel all people who are going to update their names voluntarily have done so, and write the script, it will probably take a matter of seconds to do the work.

Idea.

Disallow the N-word in aliases and names. I've seen spammers both on the BBS and the portal use that to get around the inability to post it in the BBS.
