No, it is the same reason a good martial arts teacher will kick, slap and punch a willing but stupid student who is persistently getting something wrong. People need the right motivation.

If they take the abuse and respect the teacher, they will learn more.

Admittedly i'm the wrong person to be attempting to teach people music, but i can at least try to teach them correct motivation.

Why should you put any of your life at all into pointing people towards the sticky. It is their life, and you are doing them a disservice by helping them. I personally would find it patronising and offensive if someone tried giving me help that i dont need. They dont need the help, they just need to learn to read something, that is clearly there in front of them.

Any teacher I've ever had would have probably jumped on my ass for that. Seriously - If I raised my hand and said "teacher, teacher, what does this word mean" a few things would have happened.

1. The Instructor would tell me that I should know better and that's what a dictionary is for. (kinda like saying read the sticky, huh...)

2. Depending on the teachers' mood, I might have had to copy that word and it's definition a few times and also include synonyms, antonyms and related words.

See, I for one, am all for helping people out when I can - but I also think that there is an important message that's conveyed by people getting on your ass a little - if you're given a little shit here and there for blatantly disregarding the way things work then I think you're more likely to say to yourself "Gee, that approach didn't work - maybe I should keep that in mind..."

But really - some are capable - some are not - and of course, schools don't work that way anymore either. I imagine that if a student were told to use the dictionary today, the parents would sue the teacher for cruel treatment and public humiliation, the faculty would have to write an apology to the student for not teaching him or her that word to begin with - not to mention that it's all MOOT because students cannot read anything anyways, because all of the books have been banned...

I agree - but "how" is the real problem... I mean - that's why the stickies are there - and since people didn't notice them they made them pulsate bright green and still - nobody notices them...

Then they post - and a few of us point them back to the stickies... and then they STILL don't bother actually reading them...

There are ways to solve this but they cannot be implemented here - it would require a TON of work...

Maybe the video game approach would work, whenever you get a new game you usually start out with an oversimplified tutorial level that's designed to teach you the basics...

Maybe there should be a forum portal that you MUST pass through in order to actually start posting - you know ? Where you would read the rules, be forced to look at the stickies for each forum - and it would only really take 10 minutes or so but by the time you actually get to where you can post, you're already familiar with that particular forums policies who the active mods are etc... Like an introduction. The first time you try to post to a new forum the system would check to see if you've completed that forums "training" and if not then you're not allowed posting rights until you complete it...

Cool system - and it could work but I certainly wouldn't want to have to code that! - and I doubt that the NG guys do either!

For now,maybe each of us should consider putting a link in our sigs that points back to the stickies - maybe that might do something... maybe not - I really don't know because the new guys will ignore those as well anyways....

Maybe Self moderation?? Apoint or elect a few of the regs to specifically handle the "where is","How do I" topics and the rest of us would agree to let those people handle it and for us to stay out of it altogether?? Still, I don't know...
