Reason 3 Gurus Needed For Ng Refill

For all of you who use Reason 3 -

I'd like to get a bunch of patches from everyone - obviously your best stuff - to put a NGAP Refill together that will be offered as a download on http://www.propellerheads.se/ which of course means that all registered Reason Users will be able to use OUR patches.

Get your Subtractor, Malstrom and Combi patches sorted out. They cannot rely on any other patches so don't build off of something else - start with an Init Patch and go from there.

For the NN19 and NN-XT - if you are going to use those then you must only use original samples and they will need to be stored in a sample directory and included.

Personally, I'd prefer not using the samplers at all as it will make things MUCH easier.

For Combi Patches go a little crazy but keep in mind that a Combi that contains 8 Subtractors, 6 Malstroms, 3 vocoders, 4 screams, 8 reverbs, 3 phasers, 2 spiders and a unison may not play very well on lower end systems... :)

We won't be able to offer a decent ReFill unless we can come up with a few hundred really good patches.

When naming your patches, try to keep them reasonable - I would suggest that you use your nick or a variation in the beginning and underscores in place of spaces,
Example:
LJC_crazy_phased_lead.zyp
LJC_insane_reverb_pad.xwv
LJC_this_will_kill_your_pc.cmb

All who contribute will recieve recognition in the ReFill Details section.
Anyone who decides to participate should have their patches put together and ready by the end of this month. That's about two weeks from now. I'd like to have this ready to submit by the first week of May.

For file transfers, you can either .ZIP and email or I'll give you access to an FTP where files can be uploaded.

This is an important first step in establishing a relationship between NG and Propellerhead Software. Let's try to make a good impression!

Sounds like a plan! I'm building some Combi synths at the moment (just simplified versions of Reason's own synths - but these are aimed at beginners) - but I'll see if I can get some nice stuff in for you. :-)

If you can make 'em then more power to you!

Samplers and Rex files and all of that are alright - just make sure that you create a new directory and keep all of your files together.

Great! - I'm looking forward to hearing them.

Remember guys - everyone who participates gets a little publicityout of this.
Everyone who downloads the ReFill from Prophead will see your names. Names will be listed in order of who submits the most patches.

Goal is for at least 500+ patches total
I'd really like to see roughly 200 each of Subtractor and Malstrom and at least another 100 Combi's or so.

My advice - focus on making 20 of each - subtractor and malstrom. Once those are all saved then start mixing and matching them together. With 40 patches, you should be able to crank out at least another 40 or 50 combi's easily.

I can make 20 Patches for Malstrom and the Subtractor vst's.
I've been working with reason for several years and I've got a pretty good idea of how to use it.

Two weeks eh? I'll see what I can send your way.

can I make an effects combi?

I've got a great L/R/C delay

Response to Reason 3 Gurus Needed For Ng Refill 2006-04-20 11:05:02

Admiral - you can make anything you like - anything that can be included in a ReFill is great.

roughly 10 days left to create patches then we'll gather them all up and make an assessment.

We'll most likely put everything together and all involved will have a chance to see what's included and to make suggestions or revisions before it's packaged up to be sent to Propellerhead.

Thanks all!

Uh, i'd really like to help, but I just recently got Reason (bout 3 months ago). I don't know how to use the sampler in it, or even how it works for that matter.

If it's not too much of a hassle, can someone post a moderately thorough explanation / tutorial on how to make VSTs or whatever for a refill? Because I have a great synth keyboard I use as a MIDI controller...but I don't know how to get its sounds into Reason as a VST (or whatever it is).

Thanks! I hope...

Well - any of the NN sampler patches would be a pain even if you knew what you were doing. I'd like to avoid any of those if possible.

Khuskan asked about .rex files and that's cool enough because he's versed enough with the software.

It would be great if you wanted to submit something but I would really recommend that at first you stick to Subtractor and Malstrom patches.

Remember - start with an init patch - I'd like to avoid any potential problems from building off of existing patches. The more original the better.

After that if you're feeling frisky then you can jam a few together along with some effects and create combi patches.

After I get all of the patches, in addition to my own, I may go through and see how many combis I can make by using everyone else's.

I'll make the beta version ReFill and post a link here so that everyone can download it and give some feedback - if needed, we'll make changes but as long as there are no huge problems then I'll get the ReFill over to the Propellerhead people for mass
consumption.

BTW - Welcome aboard, DJ_Dinero - We hope you enjoy your stay here at the chateau de NewGrounds de l'acoustique!

Don't see why not...

Basically, a sampler just loads *.wav/*.aif samples and maps them to your midi controller. If you try out the NN19, you'll see that there is a load sample button. If you load, say a drum hit, you'll be able to play it back using a note on your keyboard - usually it maps the default pitch as C3. If you play the keyboard higher up, say C5, it'll automatically up the pitch.

As for sampler patches, generally they have more than one sample in them and are used for recorded instruments such as violins, cellos etc.

I can see why a sampler patch would be difficult to set up, but you shouldn't have problems playing it back...

If you're new with Reason, it's probably best if you try out the synthesisers, and stick with patches for the samplers - the NNXT in particular is amazingly complex for beginners...

Well - for a few reasons
- if sampler patches are going to be used then you MUST make sure to have a very clean directory structure so that things don't get screwed up when assembling the ReFill.

- second is for size reasons. In the space that you would use to include a single sample, you could put 100's of other patches...

- Samples MUST be absolutely 100% original, the last thing I want is to find out two weeks after getting a ReFill over to Propellerhead that one of the samples was taken from somewhere else.

As long as the samples are kept small, are 100% original and are all located in proper directories then all would be fine...

For Samples:

Create a directory using only the alphanumeric characters of your nick with no punctuation, spaces or special characters.

Example: /ljcoffee

inside of that directory create a new directory named XXXsamples where XXX is the first three characters of the parent directory.

Example: /ljcsamples

Place all samples used in the XXXsamples directory
Create your patches and save them into the parent directory.

Sound reasonable?

I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass but I don't want things to get all screwed up when packing the refill. If anyone have any better suggestions for a standard directory structure then feel free to post 'em!

thanks guys

:D

Yes, of course.

True, but a sampler patch could contain a unique texture you couldn't get out of a synthesiser.

Of course. :-)

Yep. I personally won't be doing any sampler patches, but I can see where you are coming from.

I own the målstrom synth.
I can make some pretty awesome sounds with that shit.
I need 3 more patches until completion.

Yeah - I would have loved to get something from you... There's always time to do another when you're ready :)

Techni-Color, no need to post my email, it's in my profile... :D
but I just sent you one so you can reply to that.

So you own the malstrom do you? Well I hope you're right - the better the patches the more likely people will suggest it to others and the more people we might get to stop by and bring better music to the portal.

I might want to add the bass and the synth from Chaoz Devotion to the refill..
But I will record them just as a few .wav's and put them in NN-XT sampler patches..

As not to release the secrets of the trade.

Prahaps once its done, we could have a competition to see who can make the best song using nothing but the contents of the refill... That way people who submit are bound to put some great useable stuff in.

End of the month and all... I'll wait longer if I have to but I'd like to get the ReFill assembled and submitted by the end of this week (somewhere around May 6th).

I can handle any pc friendly standard compressed format - either zip or rar is cool.

Thanks Different, no big hurry - I'll wait until we get a really decent collection together - no sense in submitting a half-assed refill right?

Again - no worries mate, get what you can together and it'll help out.

heh, Nope - not too late - as you can see from the rest of this post. You wouldn't have seen anything on propellerheads site because so far I've only gotten one zip from one person...

I'll wait as long as need be - I thought that by setting a deadline that it may give people a little push to get something done quicker but I guess that's not the case here - heh...

Let's see what happens at the end of this month - this idea has been whirling around in my head for months and months now - so another few weeks isn't going to hurt anything at all...

Thanks to all of the peeps who are making a contribution!!

Talk to you all soon

Yup - Khuskan mentioned a file to be sent and I think you had sent yours mere moments later - so I (mistakenly) posted that I got his - but no - it was yours - not his - only yours... the only lonely one...

Well - if people will put some stuff together then we'll submit it - if not then I guess it'll just be a Rucklo/LJCoffee refill instead of a NG ReFill...

How was your sandwich?
