Good to know. Personally, I think the Movie Guidelines should get a minor amendment explicitly grandfathering in speedpaints before that date, just so this kinda situation doesn't happen again, but that's just me.

Judging by the fact I've still got a Gold whistle, you likely haven't - by my guess, the mods realised we didn't know about speedpaints posted before the site decided to disallow them being grandfathered in.

Its an easy mistake to make - the grandfather clause for speedpaints isn't mentioned in the Movie Guidelines, after all.

If I had to argue why, I could use the basis of this clause:

Do not submit Let's Play videos or anything that primarily depends on recorded video game footage.

Couldn't this apply to videos like video essays because it also primarily uses stuff that the author did not create? If I wanted to watch an animation the author made, I wouldn't go for a video essay on Newgrounds, because never do these creators put any animation they made onto them since they're more time-consuming and these come from people who make videos for YouTube. I know there's an exception to that, but I don't think someone like Cossepie can be a part of said exception. It still relies on using videos made by from six impala so why can't it be treated much alike to a Let's Play? Aside from actual fair use being in play, their structure relatively revolves around content they didn't make.
