Barracks Roster as of December 1st, 2019:
Okay, folks, who put this year in 5th gear? It was summer just a few weeks ago, and now, we're in December. It seems the older you get (and I ain't no spring chicken), the faster time passes you - and I have a theory why:
When you're 5 years old, and at your birthday party you get told "next year, when you are 6, you could get that bike with training wheels", you lapse into hysterics - A WHOLE YEAR! That was 20% of your current life. Might as well be a 100 years. Waiting another year is almost unfathomable.
When you're 20, and you have to wait until your 21 to be "legal", it's still annoying to have to wait. It's a long time, but now that year represents 5% of your life. It's a struggle, but you make it through.
When you're 50, a year is now just 2% of your life; you've done so much and had so many birthdays, a year is gone almost before it starts.
And at 70, a year is now just 1.4% of your life, and the calendar changes as fast as you can read it.
The years haven't gotten shorter - it's just as you get older, each one represents less and less of a period of time in your life. So, for all you young folks reading this, don't take this message as the rants of an older person who is whining about time; instead, see it as a reminder to cherish your family and friends, make good memories, and fill your life with love and peace. It is better to have 4 true friends than to be surrounded by 10 who only hang around because they're getting something from you.
Most of all, let go of regret. Everyone makes poor decisions, but beating yourself up over it won't ever change things. Instead, look at the results, and ask yourself: "what did I learn from this? How can I improve myself?" and if that decision hurt someone you loved, then look yourself square in the mirror, and make a vow that you will not only never do that again, but you will make it a point every day to rebuild the trust that was broken. Learn from your past, but regrets solve nothing. Use that energy to make changes to yourself, and make things better.
I find it hard to believe I've been on Newgrounds for over 13 years; but for all the ups and downs, I wouldn't trade it for the world. Friends have come and gone; some have come back, and others have answered the call of "real life". While my circle has gotten a little smaller, I can say with great pride and happiness that I am truly surrounded by good people. The members of the EGB are more than just dedicated users; they are folks who stand up for what is right; who keep the balance in the Portal, and help those who need it. I have discovered that how you live your life here is generally a good indicator of how you are in the real world, and I am honored to be part of the barracks with all of you.
With that, I am not worried about 2020; we will continue to fight the good fight, and lead by example every day. My wish for all of you as you celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa (or what ever your traditions bring, or not, as you see fit), is that you are always surrounded by those who love you, and you love, and that every day brings peace, health and prosperity. Karma is a real force - do good, and good will come back to you.
Sorry about the wall o' text, but I get sentimental this time of year. Just wanted to share it all with you, and say "Thank You" for another great year of service to you all. *Salutes*
