Yes, we'll have to be thorough tomorrow to ensure nothing illegal or rule breaking makes its way through.

I bet that somebody tries to pass off the original Pico game as their own.

There's usually a flood of flashes associated with the various days on NG, and without the whistle system, it'll be easier for these to fall through the cracks.

Tom really does need to get that flash mods system sorted out or more and more stuff is going to get through.

Plus it's saturday and I'll be busy, so I can't keep my usual close eye on the Portal.

I'll be on for quite alot of the day I think, so I'l be keeping a careful watch over The Portal.

I think the reason you might not be a Pico fan is because you have to put yourself in the context. Pico was created in early 2000 when graphics were crap, and the options for flash games were few and far in between. At the time it was innovating and way cool. It might not look that way now, because of the way flash games look now (the standards have improved a ton), but Pico is truly a piece of history for NG and it's a big piece at that. There wasn't anything like it before.

I have heard that it was pretty ground breaking but it's not the graphics or gameplay compared to modern flash games that puts me off as much as the general game itself. I just never got into it I'm sad to say. Then again I've always liked my dark humour to be more dark and less cartoony.

It didn't give me a virus; but I'm using Linux anyways. Now, I'm not a member of the EGB, but I have a question you guys will probably be able to answer. Just read this thread on the NG Archive, and you'll know my question. What did I miss? That's more submissions than Clock day.

I knew Pico day was in April but not sure of the exact date, its is today on the 28th of April. Looked at the portal its sure not very busy for Pico day shame but nothing new there. Again great to see those shovel ware accounts being deleted, they were a pain to be honest I hated those dress up games from them.

It was Pico day. I was on for quite a while and didn't really come across anything that was that brilliant to be honest, but then again as I have stated before I'm not the biggest fan of the series.

Well I don't think it gave you a virus, because I'm pretty sure in flash you can copy something to a clipboard, but I don't really know. I wish I was around to view it, and see if the antivirus I had registered it as a virus.

It is theoretically possible for a flash to contain code that can interact with both Javascript and the web browser, and that code could take advantage of security holes, especially in Internet Exploder. Usually, a good A/V will detect this type of behavior as suspicious and give you some sort of heads-up.

What you experienced was known as a "replication attack" - where a fairly benign piece of code (such as a print screen request) is started, and upon exit (clicking on "X" to close the window), TWO copies of it are loaded into memory. It's like a hydra - the more print-screen windows you kill, the more they stack up in ram. If you could get to Task Manager and look at all of the copies running - and kill them immediately using TM instead of "X"ing them out, then they won't spread.

Annoying as hell - more like a stupid practical joke - but generally not viral.

What troubles me most is that we have many brilliant young minds out there - and some of them choose to waste their talents on childish crap like this. They need some sense knocked into them, that's for sure.

The most disturbing thing about that flash was it had kiddie porn. That was the real issue.

Good thing you guys pointed it out here though, cause when I saw it here I sent Wade a message and he deleted it within about 30 seconds.

It's usually more effective to post flashes that break the rules here in the EGB thread than it is sending Wade a pm. He'll get the information relayed to him a lot faster.

Ah, I see -- so the print screen he described was not actually a "copy to clipboard", but "print the image onto paper"? I thought it was the other way around. Anyhow, I see -- the flashes that were made by a "Soup Squad" imposter were similar, right?

@SpiffyMasta: How long did it take Wade to remove those flash? The ones that were similar to this and were submitted multiple times?

I don't know. On saturday I popped in only once cause I had a lot of other things going one, so I only know about the one flash that was pointed out in here.

Ah well. I think it was somewhere around 5 minutes or so, and after that the other flashes that popped up were removed in around 2 minutes I guess...my memory's a bit fuzzy.

So...when's the update?

Barracks Roster as of May 1st, 2012: (Post 1 / 2)

Well, it's been quite a month - a lot of milestones and promotions, and even a few rank changes. Spiffymaster not only ranked up 2 positions - he also had 48 posts in the BBS this month! Cootie, BrokenDeck, Decky and ZJ also bumped up a rank as well.

What troubles me is that out of a roster of 33, 13 members had NO activity whatsoever this month - and many of those have been silent for a while. Not a post or a B/P point to be found. Let's see if we can roust those members out of their naps and at least drop in and say hello once in a while.

Anway , let's get this party started:

Milestones::
byteslinger - 76K saves, 89K total B/P
Coop - 74K saves, 104K total B/P
Cootie - 22K saves, 26K total B/P
Decky - 4K saves, 6K total B/P
Gimmick - 13K saves, 14K total B/P
IzzyDude - 9K saves, 11K total B/P
Jolly - 27K saves, 31K total B/P
RohantheBarbarian - 29K total B/P
SpiffyMasta - 3K saves, 5K total B/P
Tycrane - 21K saves, 24K total B/P
ZJ - 4K saves, 5K total B/P

Promotions::
Cootie - Commander
Decky - Staff Sergeant
Gimmick - Captain
IzzyDude - Praporshchik
SpiffyMasta - Sergeant
Tycrane - General
ZJ - Sergeant

Top gainers, repeat appearances::
byteslinger (40)
Jolly (16)
Gimmick (7)
Tycrane (5)
Coop (4)

Note: It was a tight race for the top 5. Cootie had 1,240 points - and almost pushed me off the list! Good for him - and I guess I better get back on my laptop. Who needs to work when there's blammin' to do?

Total gain for month: 11,928 (20 Active Members)

That's 397.60 per day, or 19.88 per day per active member.

Not a bad average - if only more members were active.

Keep up the good work, my comrades in arms - I'll see you at the front lines!

Yay, it's roster time! It's the best part of the NG month for me, I'm too much of a stats whore for a real life really. Well it helps to keep The Portal free of crap so I guess I'm doing a good service.

Well, it's been quite a month - a lot of milestones and promotions, and even a few rank changes. Spiffymaster not only ranked up 2 positions - he also had 48 posts in the BBS this month! Cootie, BrokenDeck, Decky and ZJ also bumped up a rank as well.

That is quite a bit of change in the list this month, congrats to Spiffy for getting a lot of B/P and also being such an avid poster. I myself got more posts in this thread then the average month.

What troubles me is that out of a roster of 33, 13 members had NO activity whatsoever this month

I know what you mean, personally I have been keeping an eye on EmmDubya. He used to post a lot in here and the NGPD but he seems to have dropped of the edge of the NG planet in mid February, I miss the dude.

Milestones::
Decky - 4K saves, 6K total B/P

Well I think that this is the first double milestone that I have ever had in my time as a member of the EGB and if for nothing else I think that I should celebrate by taking it easy for a day or two. Congrats to all the other users that got passed a milestone this month, keep up the good work.

Promotions::
Decky - Staff Sergeant

Got a Promotion this month as well, I really have been busy haven't I? I think that the rank badges start to look better after Staff Sergeant so it's a good promotion for me. As per usual congrats to all the other users that got promotions this month.

The List:
No. B/P / Gain / Average / Level / Change / Username / Rank / Posts / Level
24) 6,371 | 0,007 | 00.23 | D | +000.00 | HeavenDuff Staff Sergeant | 0 | F
25) 6,180 | 0,026 | 00.87 | D | -003.70 | Ronald-McDonald-Lol Staff Sergeant | 7 | C
26) 6,081 | 0,772 | 25.73 | B | +116.85 | Decky Staff Sergeant +1 | 31 | A

Well I'm well into the Sergeant ranks now and as we can see from the Staff Sergeant section of the roster we are all gathered in the lower part of this section, because of this I aim to be the highest ranked in this section by this time next month. Wish me luck.

That's 397.60 per day, or 19.88 per day per active member.

Not a bad average - if only more members were active.

We really do need to get the inactive members back online and in The Portal but if they don't respond to PM or any attempt at contact then there is little that can be done I guess.

I'm hoping to bump up another 2 places, but it will depend on activity in the portal. If I had time on the weekends to actually do some b/p I would likely leapfrog over heavenduff.

Thanks, not really too much of a big deal for me, just mainly trying to keep you guys on track and getting some help cleaning the crap out the portal.

That reminds me. When do we usually roll out roster calls. Don't we have a set of rules about inactivity and discharges?

Thanks for the Roaster bytesliner my b/p been very sluggish lately, not more then one b/p per week If I'm lucky. I would like to get more active with the portal not sure how though. Shame no one one joined this month. I have gone from using a old Mac to using a super fast windows laptop this month. It does make it easier to look at UJ flashes. I need the urge to look more on the portal.

How about this for some encouragement, if you don't pick up the pace I imagine that i'll be over taking you in 2-3 months. I don't know if you care but personally that's the sort of stuff that keeps me B/Ping, that and I really wanna get to the Sup. Commander rank. At this rate it's going to take a while.

Well that really puts a dampener on the whole mass blams of the last couple of weeks. Am I right in thinking that these games are uploading for the small amount of money NG give you?

I wonder how much money them accounts made?

Hilarious how it passes yet some of the reviews complain of it passing.

Is it against the rules now? By that I mean has Tom definatly set that rule into action? If so surely these accounts can and should be deleted.

Maybe there should be like a new news post that explains the difference between actual user content and shovelware since Tom said shovelware should be blammed and they knew the difference but I feel most newcomers don't know the difference.

That sounds like a good idea. Kinda like Ornery's Handy Dandy Scouting Guide, that get's linked to everytime somebody askes about getting scouted to the Art Portal. We could use this one to post a llink to if somebody needs to know about shovelware. Whos going to post it? Or do you think a member of staff should do it?

Some of the accounts do get deleted but they just make new ones to upload crap over time.

I'm guessing that it would be too much to hope that they just give up after they have a few accounts deleted, isn't it. Kinda makes me feel like crap because I put effort into my ocassional flash and there games usually get a higher score.

Ah, would be a good idea but there would probably be a need to keep a few shovelware games as examples of what is not acceptable anymore and the such. That and explaining what shovelware is and all. Could also make for a nice flash project where some screenshots are used instead maybe?

I think the idea of a flash is great. That way all of the shovelware games could be deleted.

A flash or a thread about them?

I think a flash would be much better as there are probably more portal-goers rather than BBS-goers on Newgrounds; however, a combination of both would be equally good...but if the users just do the opposite to annoy the thread maker, then I guess it wouldn't work.

Oh, and why not just let ALL the users, ALL of them, no exceptions, be portal banned forever?

That may seem lke a bad idea, but here's the thing: The portal ban is -- reversible -- meaning that all the users get the portal ban, and then they're sent a PM automatically. If they click a link in that PM, then they'll automatically be portal-unbanned. This only applies to those who have NOT already been portal banned, so regular users who comply with the rules will get the reversal message; since the shovelware accounts do not go to the portal or otherwise even ANSWER private messages, and just submit flash, then it'd make sense to ban all of them and only let through the *legitimate* accounts.

Is that a good idea or not? Yay or nay?

I agree that a flash would be a better idea then a thread. I think a thread would only work if it was started by a mod or user who carried a lot of respect in the forums. This would hopefully prevent spammers or general dicks in the thread.

I'd say that it's a good idea, I'm not going to lie I'm a little confused as to how it will work even after your explanation but as much as I got seemed to be an idea that could work.

It's like that "perma review ban" from when Canas' account was compromised: It showed a link that said "Click here to appeal your ban" which was malicious -- it's the same like that for this case, except here it's not malicious; it IS a flash portal ban appeal, and if you can provide proof you are a legit user then you're unbanned. This cannot happen for those who have existing bans. I'm thinking this can be done because admins know which people were banned, so they can "blacklist" those users.

And then you click the link, then something happens, you get another PM in an hour or two, and you're unbanned.

This will not happen for shovelware accounts because they don't reply to PMs, so even if they receive it they won't respond to it. Of course, there is no actual "expiration date" for that, as users can appeal whenever they want, as there is a chance that users can be inactive for as much as 2 years.

So when a normal user has arrived from his 10 year break from NG, he checks that PM, poof! He's unbanned, and he continues to a) ignore NG or b) visit NG regularly.

This works, as said before, on the assumption that shovelware accounts are bot-like and so do not reply to PMs; thus, EVERY user is "considered" a shovelware account, UNTIL they reply to that PM. They can't submit anything until they reply or click that link? Good. They bother to click that link and they resume. The ones who are not accessing NG won't have any problem since they're not accessing it anyways.

Win-win.

It's a good idea although i see a problem with it. New shovelware accounts could just be created and after all the trouble of creating a bot (or if Tom sent the PMs himself or whatever) to distribute the messages it seems like quite a big fault and because of that I don't think they would do it.

Ah. Well. Here's something I didn't anticipate.

Okay then, the best solution is the same method, only an IP ban instead of a portal ban.

O' the good old fashioned IP ban. Still has a few problems but I agree that it is probably the best way to get them to stop. Maybe when the flash mods are instated then one of there duties would be to keep an eye out for these shovelware games. I'd love to be a flash mod, sounds like it could be fun.

I can't be the only one that thinks this is a good idea just to see how many of threads are made by these idiots. I'd be understandable if it wasn't pointed out in a NG news thread.

If it was sitewide then Tom would probably alert all the users so as to not make them revolt. The PM would also say something along the lines of "This is a test portal ban. From today we are banning all shovelware accounts. To prove you are a legit account, please click here. Oh, and the link is safe. -Tom"
