I don't know if it's so much about being prejudice against anyone, but more about being a good memeber of the spam group that they are from and do what they want and post things like this. I sill think it may pass right now, since everyone is worried about getting there save point @;-}>

That makes sense now that you say that. But even still, regardless if it is the person submitting the flash or if it was the spam group that came up with it, someone has some serious beef with African-Americans. Whether or not it was done for the express purpose of pissing people off on the Portal, it's still racism. I don't think people just up and make flash like that just for getting people annoyed...there has to be some kind of prejudice or hatred underneath it. Sigh...gotta love the Internet...bring out the worst in everyone!

Anyway, I'm just trying to catch up on what's transpired since yet another of my extended absences...I notice I have to redo my signature too...time to use some google-fu and dredge up the sig from the sigmaker thread...

Oh well. I didn't get to catch a winner like the ebolaworld flash today...mostly flash where people aren't really trying. I did get a few hopefuls I was able to write nice reviews for, though only one of them passed judgment...

Well long time no see I have not seen you post here for ages Sir! but its nice to see you on here. Yes I flagged that submission it was very racist I will check to see if it passed or not.

Yeah, I know...there comes a time in your life when you need to decide whether or not you're going to move on forever from something or if you're going to hold on. I came across my old Barracks Under Fire story while cleaning out my mac and had a big time desire to come back, even if for a little bit. I was actually hoping to finish the story once and for all, but I've lost my original notes from the story, and I highly doubt I'd be able to recover it without those notes...kinda depressing...

Oh well. Life goes on. I'll have to figure something out in that regard...

Anyway, what a slow-ass Portal day to make a return...

I never knew you, but from what I've read on this page, I really really like you, Eagle.
So, glad to have you here. Again.

My net was down for today, Apparently paying my bill early made the planets align which immediately cut off my satellite television, landline phone, and internet.

But it was just under 24hours, so I almost didn't go crazy.

It might have underlying tones of actual racism, but most of the racism that the internet puts out is to be "edgy" and "cool". /b/ on 4chan is a prime example. I doubt that many people are racist, but the board freely uses the n-word and expresses a lot of hate towards blacks.

And there's the shock/anger value that most spam groups are looking for. Racism is an easy way to get people mad, which gives the spammers attention, which is what they want.

Finally, there's the majority factor. Since a majority of the people going to these sites are white, they feel that they don't need to respect or hide their hatred towards black people.

Also, whatever happened to that Counter-Strike NG story thing?

Thanks! :-D I'm looking forward to meeting all the new members like yourself (well, new to me, anyway; I've been gone for a while). From the looks of the roster, prior posts, and the forums, I'm going to be seeing some familiar faces, too, which is always a treat as well!

My net was down for today, Apparently paying my bill early made the planets align which immediately cut off my satellite television, landline phone, and internet.

Yeesh. Sounds like a bonehead maneuver that Verizon would make. Still reminds me of when I signed up for FiOS, and it took them about 15 phone calls and almost a month for me to be able to sign up for their service. Yep...sign up. As in, I called up saying, "Hi Verizon, I have my wad of cash right here I'd like to give you for your business. Can you please let me give you money?" This was difficult. I swear, the things I'm willing to do for a fast Internet connection...

Either way, at least you're back up and running on the good ol' InterTubes.

At 9/10/09 12:28 AM, TheThing wrote: Way to stop by when no one else is around. But good to see you sir.

Yeah, I tend to do that. Of course, I'm not one for the big grandiose "ZOMG IT IS ME" entrances, so it all works out. Besides, I'm too busy at work to post during the day, so you'll really only see me around at night for the most part (except for weekends of course).

It might have underlying tones of actual racism, but most of the racism that the internet puts out is to be "edgy" and "cool". /b/ on 4chan is a prime example. I doubt that many people are racist, but the board freely uses the n-word and expresses a lot of hate towards blacks.

This is very true. /b/ is fun to look at, isn't it? Sometimes it feels like overseeing an anthropological study, till I remember I'm one of those people that spend their time on the Internet as well...

And there's the shock/anger value that most spam groups are looking for. Racism is an easy way to get people mad, which gives the spammers attention, which is what they want.

Again, very true. Once you put it this way, I guess people are just trying to illicit large reactions from this stuff.

Finally, there's the majority factor. Since a majority of the people going to these sites are white, they feel that they don't need to respect or hide their hatred towards black people.

The anonymity aspect of it doesn't hurt, either.

Also, whatever happened to that Counter-Strike NG story thing?

Funny you should mention the story. Actually, finding my old story files on my laptop was what brought me back, as it reminded me how much I love this place and that I wanted to finish the story. Problem was ALL of the important notes I had for that story were writted down on scrap paper that I can't find. It had all the information about everyone in the story and what my plans were for the next matches and stuff. While I still remember how it's supposed to end, without those notes, I basically wouldn't have been able to finish the story without those notes.

So, I spent a good amount of time searching for those stupid notes and finally acme across them just a few minutes ago. Now, I just need to decipher what they say, then I'll be good to go... :-) But yeah, I do want to finish the story, and I'm going to keep the time frame back when Newgrounds first did its site renovation. I'm going to want to make some changes from how I was originally going to end it, but I think you should still be in for some surprises. Even if the people that are currently members of the Barracks aren't part of the story, it should still be fun to look at when we first dealt with the site renovations :-)

Oh well. I'm getting tired, and I'm ready to hit the hay. I'm going to bed, but I'll be on tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to plug away at my story some time this week so I'll have a couple of chapters ready by the weekend.

Gnight everyone!

*salutes*

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, uni has reduced me to lurking and little else right now. Portal seems to be ok at the moment, flashes are getting flagged when appropriate, all is well. Also, HOLY SHIT IT'S EAGLEROCK! A slightly underwhelming comeback, but a comeback nonetheless (and a welcome one at that :) ).

Yeah, I'm the same with mine - I haven't gotten any notes, but it's all up in my head. Just a case of getting the ideas onto paper, which can be a PITA, as they say in the office.

A reminder:

On September 23, the Barracks will be undergoing one of its "clean-up" periods, including a membership rollcall and officer evaluations, as well as actually doing some of the things we were supposed to be doing (namely purging and re-creating the violations threads).

I'm currently cleaning up the forums---deleting unnecessary and locked threads, and reorganizing threads to make things easier to navigate. Don't panic if you lose some posts, lol. More information will be given as time goes on.

Oh. MY. GOD! Its you!

I saw you browsing the EGB private forums last night and I was wondering when you were going to post here. How are you EagleRock? I don't believe we have ever met! xD

I don't think I've had the pleasure either. Nice to see an energetic Sergeant First Class around here! I was lurking the forums, trying to catch up on what changes have been made around here. I'd hate to start posting around here talking like an idiot because I had no clue what was going on...

Is this a total comeback or will you disappear again?

I certainly hope so. My comebacks tend to be short, I know, but I've found myself to have more down time as of late. Certainly have enough time watching the Yankee games... :-) I plan on sticking around for a while!

So....Recreate the notes with what you have got. This way it can be modern and you can include some of the new users who you haven't met, like myself, Krevzabijak etc etc.

Actually, to be honest, I wanted to finish the story with the users I already had. This would basically finish up what I started, and it would make the most sense, because the story is staged right after the site renovations. However, that's not to say I don't want to make another story after this one is done...

You seem like a keen story writer Eagle....I congratulate you for being bothered! I lose interest when writing stoies. I get writers block and then I just lose interest.

I wouldn't say keen, but I do have a way with words. I've always been good at writing, and grad school didn't hurt, either.

Maybe we could have a story part on the EGB website? Oh and Eagle, if you didn't know....ByteSlinger is working hard and is, or has set us up a great new website. Of course some of us are helping, maybe you want to check it out and I'm sure if you ask kindly Byte will allow some of your stories to be added to the site so everyone can see! :P

Well, the story is already posted in the EGB Forums, which you'll see once I start updating it. Of course, it'd be nice to have it on our official site, too. I'd be glad to help out with the site. I'm not exactly good at web design, but I am a systems admin by trade. I keep a Linux server at home up and running that can easily host a web page, forums, and whatever. The server's pretty well powered, so I can easily accommodate anything you guys want to play around with.

On a side note, I have a CS server running if anyone wants to screw around. Connect to chode.eagleworld.net and enjoy! You can IM me too if you want me to join up.

Lastly, I've had a good, productive lunch hour over here and I already finished a couple more chapters. I'd suggest for people to start re-reading the story, as I want to finish this one off while it's still fresh in my mind...

I saw it...I liked it. Wish I was good with Flash. My only submission was like 4 years ago and it sucked. Need me to recompile a kernel? Gotcha covered. Flash and actionscript...not so much.

Anyway, I've finally completed Chapter 16 of the story. I used to paste it right here in the Barracks, but I'd rather keep the story on the forums. Here's a handy link here. Again, the prologue has some good info about the story if you need to catch up, and if you haven't already, I recommend reading it from the beginning. Enjoy!

EagleRock, nice to see you. It seems that it doesn't matter how much you try not to make a big entrance, people will always talk about you when you come back. At least, this time it looks like you'll stay here for some time :)

"The Barracks Under Fire" looks good, I didn't even knew that it existed. So far I'm reading the prologue, but it's cool.

As you wish. I won't read on. Though, I'll be honest with you, I probably won't get the Yugioh references that much, as I never dealt with the show or the game.

At 9/10/09 04:15 PM, Lizzardis wrote: I'm on Chapter 6 and I am hooked. Man you are a really REALLY good writer. I like the way you include the history of the Barrack members IN with the story.

Yeah, I like how that turned out as well. Those flashback introverted references were born from me watching too much Lost. It was a huge influence and I think it worked out for the best. Note that those histories aren't all accurate, but most of them come from real histories of the players. I worked off of as much real info as I could.

Its an excellent story, and if you make a modern one....I want the heavy duty sniper who saves everyone assed from the high points! :P

I certainly have my vague ideas for the future, which probably wouldn't be centered around CS, but around a more dystopian view of a post-renovation Newgrounds. It'd basically involve Newgrounds being like a burnt out city full of poverty and ruin, and crime. It'd be fun, methinks. I'll let you know when I'm ready to start it off.

Haha...I guess that's why I try to not to make a big entrance. I prefer to live up to my reputation, not coast on it.

"The Barracks Under Fire" looks good, I didn't even knew that it existed. So far I'm reading the prologue, but it's cool.

I'm glad I've dredged it up for everyone. I already wrote chapter 17 but I need to proofread it and polish it. Chapter 18 is also in the works. With luck I'll get those two up tonight as well. Like I said, which it was originally for everyone that was in the Barracks at the time, it should be fun looking at the older members and that time on Newgrounds.

Also, the epilogue I have planned will be tons better, because it'll come from a perspective two years later.

Oh yeah, Coop, you need to check out these next few chapters...your character's time to shine has finally come... :-)

It seems about time for this. As i look at the current roster i see alot of users :::maby 7-10::: that have not posted in a very long time. I think there should be some kind of time period that if you don't post in you will be put into a inactive list. I wish I could, but the story won't really make sense, as it takes place in the past. However, I did want to write another story about the Barracks, which would take place on Newgrounds itself, not CS maps. You get a little glimpse on what the story kinda would be like in the prologue of the story. Very film-noir, dystopian kinda stuff. Burnt out society, etc. Should be a perfect place for a bunch of Elite Guards to take action in, eh?

As far as understanding the story, once you get to the third of fourth chapter, the story starts to hover around the different matches that happen, and the storyline becomes rather easy to follow. The actual plot kinda slows down at that point, as the story concentrates more on the individual matches and the characters' actions therein.

I checked out a few. I can see our worldview on society is just a little bleak, huh? :-) Seriously, though, the stories were good. Way to take the "feel-good ending" standard and rip it a new one.

I think there should be some kind of time period that if you don't post in you will be put into a inactive list. I'm not saying if you don't post in 3-4 weeks, i mean around 5-6 months and you have not posted in that time then you would just go to the inactve list. How does that sound?

Well, it's been a long time since I've been around, and I don't really know how Slash has been handling this stuff. I know the way I used to handle it was letting the Records Officer be in charge of the roster, as well as set its policies. I usually consorted with whoever it was at the time to make sure inactivity was dealt with in a good way. It used to be handled roughly on a 2-3 month level, with officership, rank, and general reputation giving allowances on the Records Officer's discretion. But again, I'm a bit out of the loop to tell you how it is now.

Haha...Glad to be back. Nice change from the usual crap I've dealt with over the past few months. Feels good to be back into the story as well.

Incidentally, I've posted Chapter 17 as well. Here's a handy-dandy link for all:

Barracks Under Fire - Chapter 17

Hope you all like it. I've half-completed chapter 18, and hopefully will finish it tonight. I have the day off work, but need to fix some stuff around the house, so not sure how it'll go timewise. We'll see later!

That to me looks like a total resubmission therefore it could be classed as malicious since it has NO changes....What do you think?

Copy that. As a matter of fact, he submitted this flash three times in the past two days. First time was blammed.

Here's another flagworthy, hateful flash:

This one, once you get through the 20-minute SS intro, depicts 9/11 like it was a Jenga game...ugh...

EagleRock, it's great to finally meet you!
I'm one of the newer members here, but from the first few pages of this thread, I've noticed how much you've put into this place to have it establish itself to live for over 1000 pages and still not die, it's amazing. The foundation that you've created which was carried through by some of the most responsible past leaders up to today is amazing.

I have one question though, how did you decide which leader to succeed you when you left Newgrounds, and how much work did you put in trying to find the right replacement?

Ya know, I thought the portal would've been awash with 9/11 tributes and hateful/malicious/stolen flashes today. So far, it's rather slow. I guess everyone's gearing up for MADNESS day in 11 days. Ya know, now that I think about it, even though the first MADNESS day was 922/07, I think Tom may have made that NG holiday as his way of paying tribute to the victims of 9/11. Sure it may have been 6 years and 11 days later, but all the MADNESS guys are killing each other, blowing each other to smithereens, shooting each other, stabbing, etc. What do y'all think?
