Everytime I hear the word macho I always think of Laurie Anderson ^^ Since I mentioned that, I've tried, hard, and I have yet to come up with an instance in which I've been banned from any BBS ~shrug~ probably it has more to do with my penchant for understanding the "Why?" and "How?" of things than anything else.

Should you really have to try that hard to come up with anything? I can simply tell you with complete certainty that I was never banned from the BBS before I was modded, in the 9ish months I was a regular user. I mean, I never missed more than 2-3 days without making at least one post back in those days (unlike nowadays when I might disappear for 5 days at a time or more), and bans had to be at least 3 days back then. I suppose some jokester may have banned me for 5 minutes and then cleared it, just to say they'd banned gfox, but no one ever claimed to have done that or anything, nor should anyone have had reason to, so... That wouldn't really count, anyway.

You and I, we are the BBS ban low-scoring golfmasters, with an incredible 0 strokecount.

I have a couple of pages to catch up on every day, which beats 20 or however many it was in a month or however long it was. Think about it. :P

Well, everyone obviously has some amount of catchup in here unless they're a fixitesque BBS robot. That said, some people seem to fully use this as the lounge it became day-in and day-out, with many conversational posts in one page... Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I wish I could do that more often, in fact, but... it ends up making the pages per day count go so far up as to make it really difficult to catch up in here, and to work up the effort and desire to do so, hence my usual practice of responding to posts in my listtopics, other people's listtopics, and even the newbie question topics before I come here. Today I'm coming here first to catch up as I've posted a couple times in the past few days in here without catching up on all that came before, so I felt I should rectify that ASAP in case I end up not catching up on the rest of Wi/Ht?. Yes yes.

Anyway, it was 14 pages today, not 20. heh. #;-}>

The level system was implemented AFTER people began collecting exp, so humantarget went from no level to level 30 in one go. Pimp and Shrapnel would have skipped quite a few levels as well.

But -bomb- was level 30 before HT was, I believe. And Pimp was level 30 for awhile and then HT got it back, etc. etc.

Yes i understand that, but as i said, i think maybe both of us are confused as to what we were actually implying, you to me and me to you....I think thats gonna make alot less sense than i thought it did :)

What the shit? O_O

I see what you mean now, but the "I dunno why we're even talking about it now, I think that discussion was in Dobio's old top posters topic" part sounded to me like you were saying "Why are you replying to me about that now? Weren't you and I talking about this (the post I replied to) back in that topic, not this one?!" It's something about the way you phrased it. Now, if you'd just said "I think this sort of thing was discussed back in the top posters topic, why bother talking about it now in level up!?" I would have said. "Eh, for the hell of it" and that woulda been it. Oh wells. ;_;

At 8/18/04 12:59 AM, gfoxcook wrote: Seriously, what's your beef with Toocool? O_o
Mine is he's never around. There's a lot of other people who deserve to be here more than he does. The guy virtually disappears for months then catches wind of yet another election (3rd time's a charm 'eh?) and decides to pop out of the woodwork? Bullshit. If he gets in then something's seriously wrong. This is definitely rare footage but I agree with Dobio on this one (although I assume for different reasons).

I would presume so, but since Dobio never said why he had a problem with Toocool, and would vote for ANYONE but him, we may never know. ;_;

As for your reason, I don't agree with your cynical assessment that he only shows up when he thinks there's an election coming. He shows up when he shows up. There's seldom been any alignment there, and if there has been, I would wager it was coincidental. I think the reason he deserves to be in the official membership is simply that he USED to do a shitload around here, he was here before a lot of the now current regulars, and there IS such a thing as rewarding past (and future) performance, not just present performance. I don't like a "what have you done for me lately?" method of rewarding people...

If Toocool were voted in, it is indeed possible he'd not show up very often still, and wouldn't help out much, but I have a feeling his attendance around here might just increase if he felt more appreciated due to such an act on our parts. :::shrugs:::

As I said in the e-mail where I was NOMINATING two people (not voting for them, spancker's e-mails were confusing, as you should know)... If we vote people in while predicting whether they'll be around in the future, then why were Drimarki and redrum and so forth ever added? I don't think it's right to predict future behaviour at all, but especially based on past behaviour, for the purposes of an election into a group of friends who just share similar interests on this portion of the NG BBS, but anyway...

Understood. Someone scowl at me anytime. This election has been screwed up from the start. First, aren't we supposed to have a list of nominees to choose from? Second, aren't we supposed to only vote for one person? Which brings me around to number 3. Unfortunately I already know how three members voted (I'm not running this one guys) so now my vote (which I haven't cast yet) will be biased. Seeing as we can vote for more than one person I better make a list.

Again, I wasn't trying to vote for two people.. I was under the impression that we were supposed to nominate any and all people we thought should be considered for addition, tell spancker WHY we think they deserve to be added, and then SPANCKER was going to make the decision himself. That IS what he said in the e-mail that I received. Perhaps I didn't receive some other mail between that and the actual results e-mail, but if so that isn't my fault.

And finally, nominating more than one person, voting for more than one person, and more than one person being able to join at once (something I am majorly in favour of, and have been since January as you know, since we hold elections so rarely, and have added two at once twice before) are all three very different things... and I think there's been some confusion about all of that in the past.

Ain't that always the way? Seriously, though, you can't complain that much about ranking up at 10:09 PM NG time... I mean, I think my last rankup was around 6 AM, and when it's 6 AM or so, you have to wait a LOT longer for 9 flash parked in UJ to finally clear. Hell, I was waiting most of that night/morning just to get enough UJ flashes to help me along to 30000 in the first place.

All that said, and having already congratted you via e-mail... Congrats again!

As for the gap... heh, sorry about that. It wasn't put in place for you alone, but I've spent many a month building up this moat between me and ramagi and the rest of you all, and I don't regret it for a second. I could take a nice long vacation from b/ping without any fear of falling out of the top 3.... and that is sweet, sweet luxury.

gfoxcook

Heh i was just bored, i knew all of you could've done the math yourselves ;P

Yeah, that's pretty much how it's shaken up in the end. But don't forget that ramagi took a several-month long break at 36,000 while fixit was still moving... and don't forget that before fixit stopped in April (and it wasn't termination, it was his program telling him to stop at 49500 so his creator could get the last 500 points to 50k manually... alas, he'd already killed his creator ;_;)...

anyway, before fixit stopped in April, he gained almost 20,000 more points than he needed for EGSC, so... ramagi and fixit kinda belong on both sides of that two-group list of yours (both have/still care and don't/didn't care at some point). And Dogma now needs to be added to the still going side, as well.

At 8/18/04 10:16 PM, Recon_Rebel wrote: Have you noticed the freakin' point gap between Crono- and gfox? It's damn near 7,000. That's insane. You keep bringing up the gap. Stop focussing on how far above Crono (and now you) I am, and start thinking about making it to a nifty number. When I passed Crono and Joe (in that order, not Joe and Crono like you did... interesting how they've swapped almost perfectly symmetrically, eh?) back in the fall, I wasn't aiming directly for ramagi or fixit, I was aiming for 36000 points. Then when I hit the ugly 37000, I was aiming for 38000 ASAP... and then I wanted to hit 40k. And then 42k became my goal. Etc. etc. etc.

Not NEEDING to vote on UJ flash again perhaps... not WANTING to? That may be a different story.

So what's it gonna be, Dogma? You mentioned alt-account voting instead, much like Joe voted a lot for NemesisM66 after he hit EGSC and lost some motivation... but you're #9. Is that high enough for ya or no?

If you want to split time between your main account and one or more of your numerous alts, I'd suggest at least getting a goodly number of saves for D0GMA each week. Never hurts to help out that ratio. And then your alts can become Hitler-esque blam ratio machines as a result. heh. #;-}>

Everyone is used to the static-scaling system in place now. There's been rumours of either an entirely new system (for both ranks and levels), or just more ranks and levels, being implemented at some unknown future date. Just wait for it.

Entirely new system for ranks AND levels? Possible, but I hope not. As long as expcount and b/pcount remain unchanged, and the systems for gaining exp and b/p remain the same, I suppose it really doesn't matter that much whether there's new ranks or levels and whether scaling/static stuff remains the same or not, as it doesn't take away anything that we've done in the past, but... it would frustrate a lot of people who're close to a certain level or rank and then BOOM, they can't get it EVER due to the change in the system. But oh well, there's always alt accounts to experience a level that you were approaching and then suddenly zoomed right past, if you really want to hit it that badly.

(for instance, if they added 20 more levels, and I was suddenly zapped from level 17 to 25, and thus missed out on 24 and a few other of my fave levels between 16 and 24... I'd probably be slightly upset but then I have a level 13 and level 10 alt right now, and one of those would probably end up at 22 and the other at 20 or something, so it wouldn't be so bad)

At 8/19/04 09:42 AM, Eldarion wrote:
Level 30 is almost impossible to get, especially for a level 9 like me. Let me do some calculations...
<snip out math>

Work it out however you like, the fact remains that it's a good system as it is representative of the fact that you are constantly increasing both your experience and your proporionate experience. I've used this example a number of times:

Your parents are 20 when you are born.
When you are 5, you are 20% of their age.
When you are 10 you are 33.33% of their age.
When you are 20, you are 50% of their age.
When you are 40, you are 66.67% of their age.
When you are 60, you are 75% of their age.

At no time are you ever any closer than 20 years younger than your parents, but your percentage constantly goes up. In the experience system, this is reflected by the fact that your base voting power is constantly increasing.

That's an excellent analogy. I might just save that to the file with the "this is what happens when HT deposits" miniFAQ.

The fact that there are "levels" arbitrarily placed along the way causes people to think that more levels would actually mean something. They are simply there as a courtesy to let people have shorter range goals to attempt to achieve, as well as having predefined BBS icons.

Indeed. Not just shorter range goals (because every 000 or 500 ending exp amount could be considered that), but also a VISUAL goal, and thus something that seems more tangible... to reach for sooner rather than later.

Hey now, don't look at it that way. Look at it as an opportunity to increase your stats aside from your already high blampointcount, and thus help out the Wi/Ht? side of the "competition" in the end, eh? #;-}>

I am a master of teh maddening nameshortenings.

You mean my main will pass your alt one day? But it sounds like something Baron would do to keep the pipe level if he deposited for his alt.

If I stop depositing for it, yes. We'll see. By the time my main alt gets to level 16, it could be so far down the line that my love affair with 16 has weakened somewhat and I decide to just keep depositing with it, who knows... or I could have given it to my gf, which is something I've been thinking about doing almost ever since I created it as a name-placeholder, and is the reason why I started depositing for it in the first place. Then again, I have an alt alt that has no posts on it like my main alt does, and thus that's more likely to be a good account to give her if she should want a NG account. Ehhhh.

Wow. The first seven consecutive posts on page 625 (following my ill-timed level up! post two from the bottom of page 624) all included congrats and replies to that post (and then five more posts thereafter, but no longer in-a-row)...

I certainly didn't expect that, thanks guys. Then again, I've made such a big deal about loving level 16 and wanting to get to it for so long and then how much I love being in when I finally got there for the past year or so that my time at 16 ending can't possibly have been a small event, I suppose. Especially on such a slow news night. #;-}>

MTE, I find it hard to comprehend, swallow, and accept as well. Thanks, though. #;-}>

No kidding it doesn't fit me. It doesn't fit the neutral aura in general, in fact. But it fits me better than the level 14 rusty pipe thingie, so I guess that's good. Thanks, and I'm glad you'll enjoy seeing the bronze gauntlet around even more than it already was (just Recon lately, I believe?), and yes... it'll take SOME getting used to. Understatement of the day right there. heh.

At 8/22/04 01:28 AM, D0GMA wrote: Ah, so you've finally gotten it for good eh? Grats =)

I never had it not-for-good. If, on Friday night/Saturday morning I'd deposited right away, I would have been 17 for 2 or 3 hours and then fallen back when HT's deposit took effect a bit before the server recalc time, but... I ended up waiting until about 10 minutes before server recalc time to deposit so I could avoid that indignity, and it worked. I saw the amount for level 17 go up from 6719 to 6723 and knew it was safe to deposit up from 6710 to 6720 and did so.

At 8/22/04 01:35 AM, BahamutReborn wrote: Congrats Gfoxcook! Those Nunchaku sure are looking good at the moment.
So how does it feel to return to a fist icon eh ole' chap?

Nunchaku always look good. ;_;

It feels okay. I don't have anything particularly for OR against fist levels in general. I liked the boxing glove levels, for one thing... I had 10 back in January-February 2003 and 12 a few months later, back when I was new to the BBS and all... so fond memories of those times.

This is my least fave of the high-level gauntlets, however. I prefer silver to bronze, and the gold one just kicks so much ass. I don't normally like gold, so that's even more impressive that I dig level 25's icon (I like the look of silver or platinum better in general, real life or .gif pics alike).

Anyway, thanks!

A third person bemoaning the difficulty of getting used to me being 17 instead of 16. I feel yer pain, man. No one's pain over this can be as weighty as mine, after all. #;-}> Thanks, though. One more step towards the holy land of 20+ highleveldom, eh? I think I'm firmly ensconced in the "upper-middle class" of NG levels, though, so that's good (but I'm a big fan of the "middle-upper class," specifically levels 24 and 25)...

Thanks for not stealing my "thunder," weakly posted as it was (I didn't want to make a huge deal about a level up I'm not entirely happy about, for one thing. I probably didn't celebrate ENOUGH when I hit level 16, now that I think about it... but then, I never ever ever once took having level 16 for granted, either. I love that level. ;_;). Just because it's not relevant to a conversation that may be going on doesn't mean it's out of place in this thread. All of us regulars have posted a rank up at some stage or another. I don't see you complaining about gfox announcing his level up when it had nothing to do with Bonus depositing for carmel. You can't expect everyone to put their two cents in and then go "Oh btw, the real reason I'm posting is to announce my achievement." That's just a hassle.

Well, even though you used my disconnected-from-the-rest-of-the-convo level up! post as an example, I wholeheartedly agree with your message. One BBS user cannot be treated with a completely different set of standards than another, especially in this wonderful topic of ours. We must embrace the same things or shun the same things from different users, in general at least.

I would just say that if RedCircle, or anyone... has a problem with a noob who only posts 4 times in here over the course of however long a time period (a year, two years, whatever it was)... and never seems to come back and reply to replies or appreciate the congrats he's given for his accomplishments or whatever... that you simple don't congrat the person! There's no need to put down their accomplishment as "too minor" to say anything about or whatever. I mean, hell... Yoink's level is far superior to mine, but does that mean he scoffed at my level 17 rankup as beneath him? Nope, he congratted me the same as all of you who have a lower level than me. :::shrugs:::

Anyway, I think that's a good policy. If you respect a person who posts a level/rankup post in here, then congrat away. If you don't, then just don't reply. There's no need to say something negative in place of a congrats, after all. It's the ol' "if you can't think of something nice to say to someone, better to say nothing at all than something mean" policy that is followed all too rarely.

Heh, but of course I wasn't... I was greeted here as a fellow NG fan by my fellow NG fans, and rapidly included in the group. We were smaller back then, and perhaps it was easier to accept new people, especially when they post as long and non-nooby posts as me (WINK), but just because the BBS is overflowing these days doesn't mean we have to "guard" against newness. Just respond as you feel is necessary, but preferably with some measure of politeness, and ignore those you feel should be ignored.

I consider the boxing glove icons "fist" icons as they do represent fists, albeit covered (so do the gauntlets, though), and I like how they look, so I wouldn't call 17 the first "good-looking" fist icon. I'd call 10 and 12 that, and then 18 and 25. 17 is probably 5th in terms of fist/coveredfist levels in my book. But it's okay. I'll get over it sooner or later.

And a bit after Christmas, I'll be hitting 18's silver goodness, so that'll make me quite happy indeed.

And yep, a fist for probably 11 months or so. It took 4 months to go from 16's start to 17's start, so say almost 5 months to 18 (like I said, a bit after Christmas and the New Year, methinks.. 8/22 to 1/11ish...)... and maybe almost 6 months from 18 to 19 (maybe 1/11ish to 6/30ish... just in time for my 28th birthday on June 30th, 2005! Bakunin was one of the "leaders" of the Anarchist movement at the beginning of last century. The symbol was an all black flag. That said, I spend a shitload of time modding reviews almost every day.

Yeah you are definately needing of a serious flaming, any takers?

No flaming the trolls, silly. That just feeds them. Christ, doesn't anyone on NG BBS have a background in usenet? Flame the flamers, ignore the trolls. It's simple.

Yeah, I should probably review all his other movies for easy responses as well, he digs my reviews. I've only reviewed his 4 HNTs and his clockday flash... how many other movies does he have? If you know offhand, I mean.

Zeus's gauntlet, eh? Heh, funny. The zeus gauntlet is a nifty item in the original Final Fantasy, which I believe casts LIT2 when used in battle. I always imagined it as a kinda opalescent blue, though, not bronze.

Right, I see. Yeah, that all makes good sense. Thanks Bonus.

It works particularly well on firefox, where you can have loads of tabs open with all the different posts you want to quote, thus saving you lots of window juggling. I use the "middle click to open in new tab thing", click on "Reply with Quote" for all the relevant posts, then cut and paste to my heart's delight

That is incredible b/ping - I had that kind of rate about a fortnight after I started but then went away loads so it dropped dramatically (I lost about 3 weeks worth of b/ping :'( ) and congrats on 100th post also - many more to come I suppose...

So how does it feel to return to a fist icon eh ole' chap?
Nunchaku always look good. ;_;

I found your post to that of a fireworks show. Replies to everyone, in variable post messages from small to large, for the entire world to see.

I myself am looking forward to the Nun-chaku but dislike the Iron and Bronze fist. But I guess everyone has their own personal taste of the levels.

Well, heres a icon I made a long time ago for the "Add more levels" topic. A katana if you will.

And so, with the fitting of the gautlet for Gfoxcook, Recon_Rebel awaits for his gift.

Bahaha, I found that randomly thrown in picture of Anton LaVey to be rather funny! I bet you were waiting for the right moment to throw that in.
