Neat! I'm .24 VP away but I'm getting there. Of course, this won't be until January. Ah well.
That'll come around soon enough. Plus tomorrow is the nice reward of being confused with life and deckheadtottie once more :P

I can´t recall any at the moment. But don´t they have like an average for every run, every homerun, every time they hit the ball, every catch etc.?

Well, batting average is the number of hits (1, 2, 3 bases or a home run) over the number of chances to hit. This should be multiplied by 100 to express as a percentage, but Americans have real trouble with that, expressing percentages as decimals :P

Home runs is easy - the number of times they hit the ball out far enough that they can touch 1st, second, third and home bases in succession without being out. The record for this is 73, set by Barry Bonds, though everyone knows he was on HGH for this :P

Roy was an excellent leader, and even though they had more leadership in '01 then any team could ever need, Roy still deserves some respect as a guy that could build a team.

But this problem shouldn't occur to that much people here. As far as I know movies aren't dubbed in the US. How about the UK? Are foreign films dubbed there?

I thank god they don´t do that in Holland. But the language differences play such a big role in the movie. Do they still literally translate it then like this?:

"Ich habe angst das ich am ende meiner Fransozisch sind. Sollen wir dieser Konversation auf Englisch vortsetzen?"

"Spreche sie Englisch?"
"Nein"
*calls German speaking basterd*
"Frag ob er am leben bleiben wollte."
"Wollen sie am leben bleiben?"

"Es sind meine Freunden auf Italien"
"Gutentag"

I assume they had to think of something new in those and many other scenes? Otherwise it would be pretty confusing =/ Or are you Germans used to that by now?

So... does that mean that every time they have a strike, it counts to the number of chances to hit? And every time they actually hit the ball, it counts to number of hits? And does it matter whether they hit the ball on the wrong side of the line (not sure what the term is, foul ball?)?

Home runs is easy - the number of times they hit the ball out far enough that they can touch 1st, second, third and home bases in succession without being out. The record for this is 73, set by Barry Bonds, though everyone knows he was on HGH for this :P

I don't know, I didn't watch the movie dubbed. :P

"Ich habe angst das ich am ende meiner Fransozisch sind. Sollen wir dieser Konversation auf Englisch vortsetzen?"

Nice try, but a few mistakes here and there. My correction:
"Ich befürchte, dass ich am Ende bin mit meinem Französisch. Wollen wir diese Konversation auf Englisch fortsetzen?"
You'd only say "ich habe Angst" if something scares you.

"Spreche sie Englisch?"
"Nein"
*calls German speaking basterd*
"Frag ob er am leben bleiben wollte."
"Wollen sie am leben bleiben?"

Yeah, this would sound ridiculous. Just as ridiculous as in "Saving Private Ryan" when they met the german soldier and one of them had to translate everything even though they where speaking german all the time. >_>
Dubbing isn't a bad thing in general (plus I hate reading subtitles), but sometimes it can destroy the atmosphere of a scene.

Also: "Frag, ob er am Leben bleiben möchte."
"Wollte" is past tense and means something different in this context. But I think it's going too far to explain it (ie I don't know how I could explain it. ^^ )

"Es sind meine Freunden auf Italien"
"Gutentag"

"Freunde"; "aus"; and you need a space between "Guten" and "Tag".

But other than that, your german is pretty good. :)

I assume they had to think of something new in those and many other scenes? Otherwise it would be pretty confusing =/ Or are you Germans used to that by now?

See above, it can really destroy the atmosphere of a scene, but most of the time dubs are pretty good. And it saves you from reading subtitles all the time.
However, there are some pretty bad translations where you think what the translators had been smoking to make such mistakes.
One example is the word "silicon" which more often than not gets translated as "Silikon" (="silicone"). Ok, I can see the similarities between those words, but it should be obvious that microchips don't have anything to do with breast implants. -.-

But on the other hand there are examples where the dubbing is even better than the original. Most prominent example is "The Persuaders", know as "Die Zwei" in germany. This series was a very big success in germany because of the funny dialogues the translators wrote.

<3 Bourque. Haha. 2001, they were absolutely stacked obviously, they won the Cup, but it doesn't take away from what you pointed out up above (the text I deleted to keep this post short.) Roy was an excellent leader, and even though they had more leadership in '01 then any team could ever need, Roy still deserves some respect as a guy that could build a team.

I remember hearing the legend of 'Mission 16W' - one game, the score was tied at 1 and between periods, the coach said "Right, we need a goal from somewhere." Ray Borque looked up and said "I've got it covered" The very next period, he slapped a shot over Brodeur's glove and gave the Avs a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish, ending up 3-1 winners and taking a 2-1 lead in the series.

No need to take that tone with me :(

Well, batting average is the number of hits (1, 2, 3 bases or a home run) over the number of chances to hit. This should be multiplied by 100 to express as a percentage, but Americans have real trouble with that, expressing percentages as decimals :P
So... does that mean that every time they have a strike, it counts to the number of chances to hit? And every time they actually hit the ball, it counts to number of hits? And does it matter whether they hit the ball on the wrong side of the line (not sure what the term is, foul ball?)?

Right, the balls and strikes thing is different - the pitcher pitches and if he hits the strike zone (Knee to letters, home plate width), the player swings and misses or connects with the ball going out of play foul, that's a strike. Foul balls can't be strike 3, if you get three strikes, you're out. If you get 4 balls - pitches that are outside of the strike zone, that the player doesn't swing on, he can walk to first base.

At bats (chances to hit) are the number of times a player gets to the plate and either scores a hit or gets out. Reaching on errors counts as an at-bat, but no hit. Being hit by the pitch and getting a base on Balls (walk) do not count as at bats, neither do sacrifice outs, where you move runners up intentionally, or even score them.

Home runs is easy - the number of times they hit the ball out far enough that they can touch 1st, second, third and home bases in succession without being out. The record for this is 73, set by Barry Bonds, though everyone knows he was on HGH for this :P
Isn´t a home run simply whacking the ball over the fences?

Not quite - that's the simpler version, as the player then gets to jog leisurely around the bases, to complete the run. You can belt it into the outfield and run hell for leather and make it the 360 feet from home plate to home plate. The inside the park home run is possible and it was the way that Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner scored his first career Home Run.

Off the top of my head, On Base Percentage refers to the amount of times the batter reaches base divided by his at bats. Slugging Percentage actually weights each hit i.e. single weights 1 double 2 etc. divided by his at bats.
It's mainly use to compare power hitters and such.

Well we do have dubbed versions of movies for children (Madagascar, Kungfu Panda etc.), but I´d still rather go to the original version and take the trouble to read the subtitles.

But maybe that is because there aren´t many (good) voice-actors in Holland. It´s just kinda strange to hear for example Alex the Lion from Madagascar having the same voice as Shrek and Po (Kungfu Panda). Plus the original voice-actors usually do a much better job anyway.

But perhaps that´s different in Germany.

One example is the word "silicon" which more often than not gets translated as "Silikon" (="silicone"). Ok, I can see the similarities between those words, but it should be obvious that microchips don't have anything to do with breast implants. -.-

Lol :p

But on the other hand there are examples where the dubbing is even better than the original. Most prominent example is "The Persuaders", know as "Die Zwei" in germany. This series was a very big success in germany because of the funny dialogues the translators wrote.

Yeah, but doesn´t that still give you mixed feelings? I mean, doesn´t that give you the feeling that you´re not actually watching the real movie?

This I did know from the times I played baseball in highschool. Or it was softball actually. But does that foul ball at strike two still count towards chances to hit?

At bats (chances to hit) are the number of times a player gets to the plate and either scores a hit or gets out. Reaching on errors counts as an at-bat, but no hit. Being hit by the pitch and getting a base on Balls (walk) do not count as at bats, neither do sacrifice outs, where you move runners up intentionally, or even score them.

Alright, and sacrifice outs are those times when they don´t actually swing at the ball but just let it drop on the bat. Right?

But what is reaching on errors then?

Home runs is easy - the number of times they hit the ball out far enough that they can touch 1st, second, third and home bases in succession without being out. The record for this is 73, set by Barry Bonds, though everyone knows he was on HGH for this :P

Yes okay, but that´s something that doesn´t occur often right? Unless someone like... tosses the ball over the fences or into the player benches or something.

Okay I think I get this. Base Percentage actually means the amount of times they scored a point divided by the amount of times they hit the ball?

And the slugging percentage just counts the amount of ... plates he ran after his hit?

Yeah, there's a pretty big voice actor scene with lots of good voice actors here. And not only do they dub movies but they also can be heard in full cast audio dramas, which too is only a big thing in germany, I think.

Of course it's sometimes weird to hear a voice and then think: "Where did I hear that voice before?"
And sometimes an actor is dubbed by more than one actor, even though most big actors like Samuel L Jackson or Nicolas Cage or Bruce Willis have their "standard voice-actor".

But on the other hand there are examples where the dubbing is even better than the original. Most prominent example is "The Persuaders", know as "Die Zwei" in germany. This series was a very big success in germany because of the funny dialogues the translators wrote.

No. Maybe people here are just used to it. For us it's weird to read subtitles. ^^
