Well, while they were ongoing, I suppose I've only watched matches in 4 or so, but I've seen clips of matches from other ones. Only seen one match in one World Cup live, but it was a doozy (wish I had also seen the HAND OF GOD game between Argentina and England that came just BEFORE the W. Germany vs. Argentina final that I did see in person, though).

In 2002 I really felt as if an Asian or North American team would finally break through and steal the championship from those Latin-Americans and Europeans who dominate the sport and even look down upon the newcomers. It would have been a nice little slap to the rest of the world to see the USA or Korea or Japan take it.

Yeah, no kidding. Anyway, they got further than most people expect. S. Korea and USA especially. People thought Poland and Portugal would be the teams to come out of that group, for one thing, and it was the exact opposite! #;-}>

Same goes, more or less, for the way the France group turned out. Some groups went more or less predictably, though (England/Argentina/Sweden group).

As soon as all three of those teams were eliminated I had no more interest. Brazil/Germany? bah.. same old song and dance.

You know, you'll definitely be hitting the top 50 on the way to Praporshchik. There may be 32 people who've gotten to or passed by Praporshchiks right now, but I can almost guarantee you there will not be 50 or more when you hit that rank. #;-}>

Because Police Captain, EG Private, EG Praporshchik, EG Brigadier General, and EG Supreme Commander are the most "different" badges to the previous few ranks of all the badges.

Police Captain changes from silver to gold, that's a much bigger change than all of the previous badges except perhaps changing from citizen/safetypatrol/security to police in the first place.

EG Private is the first EG badge, and thus a very big change (plus it's back to silver from the gold of Police Captain).

EG Praporshchik is the first major change after 8--count them EIGHT--silver/blue EG badges with very little difference between them.

EG Brigadier General is the first General badge, the first badge with a wreath around it, and the first badge with a General's star.

and finally, EG Supreme Commander is the ultimate badge, the only badge with a flaming wreath, and has 5 stars, much more crowded then all the general ranks before it. Impressively busy-looking badge. #;-}>

The World Cup was great, apart from that little capitulation incident vs. Brazil in the quarters when they had 10 men... It wasn't Italia '90 standards for sure, but it was cool - the emergence of South Korea, Turkey and the US, the fantastic England - Argentina game (possibly the single most tense second half I've ever seen - Nigeria could have run it close, but I was in an exam for the second half, thank god), Ireland's last gasp equalisers vs. Spain and Germany, and the major European powers (Italy, Spain, France) choking massively and comically.

Best moment was Italy - South Korea for me. I was watching all of it (except the crappy final) at uni, and we've got tons of overseas students. So for this game, half the room was Italians and the other half Koreans. Just watching their reactions was priceless. Of course, the England - Sweden game was cool, as I won a free budweiser inflatable sofa and crate of beer (on ice, under the sofa) for the game. That ruled.

When I originally passed him, he didn't seem too upset about it. I mean, he even said that he didn't mind as long as no one passed him again and dumped him out of the top 10, and I feel the same way if he passes me while I'm gone (a distinct possibility, I'm only 200 ahead of him, and will be gone for over 48 hours).

In any event, though, yes, he hasn't commented about "the great Recon/GFox b/p race" ever since that great point-by-point tie on Sunday night. But I don't think he was even aware of that at the time. Who knows till he says something. :::shrugs:::
