Used to be, I'd feel like maybe I was missing something when people talked about Marvel and DC.
Nowadays, I just zone out and move along. I can take a little dose of an animated series now and then, go with my fangirl girlfriend to see the X-Men movies, though I don't know the characters, even read a comic book or two now and then.
But I can't count myself a fan or anywhere near an expert. Hell, I don't even know which characters are from Marvel and which are from DC. No spancker, most have wild powers but they're a few individuals out there who can hold their own without 'em. Look at Cap for example. He leads the Avengers of which one member is a freakin' god. There was one issue (Heroes Reborn) where they had finally defeated Kang and Swordsman (hey spancker, another hero without powers) wanted to carve open his chest and Thor wanted to crush his skull. Cap stepped in and said "The Avengers don't kill prisoners, at least not on my watch. Any of you have a problem with that?" Nobody said a word.

You are spot on with the bonus stuff. You collect bonuses as your level increases. Although, that is not the main motivation. Some people do it for the '1337ness' like you mentioned. Some just want a higher voting power, which will also contribute to their '1337ness'. I expect there's other forms of motivation.
Easiest and most practical way of gaining exp. - watching 5 movies and depositing.

Pretty much as leeboy said, you'll increase your voting power and get access to the secrets (see your profile). But more importantly, it gives you that "yay, I reached level foo" feeling inside. Although I did prefer the level 10 icon I had a few days ago.
