Case in point: has anyone else ever noticed that only a very, very selection of genres is ever present in those lists? Nothing against metal - there's certainly some good metal bands out there -, but for the most part, it just seems to be about making other people think you've got a bigger e-penis by showing how you know/listen to/are a fan of all the coolest bands.

And no, I'm not looking at anyone in particular. In fact, I couldn't even say who's doing this without checking; I usually just skip over those lists entirely.

On the one hand I AM interested in what other people listen to. It tells a lot about a person, in my opinion.
On the other hand you're right: Sometimes it seems that some people (not particularly here on NG, but in general on the internet) put some "cool" or "hardcore"-stuff in those lists.

So, now one may ask why I bother to make a "Listening to:"-List if I don't care what people think about it? Because I am interested in what other people listen to and maybe they are interested what I am listening to. But I still don't care what others think about my taste of music ;)

That's good. ^^ FWIW, BTW, I don't actually think that people are not listening to the songs they put in there - I just sometimes have a feeling (again, generally speaking!) that the knowledge that these songs will be listed in a public post may influence what people listen to in the first place.

In other words, I think that some people might just skip over that Cindy Lauper song if it comes up, for example, and hope that something "better" will come up next. Similarly, I think that people whose taste is less "cool", so to speak, may be kept from posting these lists at all for fear of being looked down upon or having their taste sneered at. (Not necessarily openly, of course, but still.)

Ah well. :)

BTW, people who're interested in what *I* listen to can check out my last.fm (which, I freely admit, has more than its fair share of embarassing stuff, from Sesamstraße to Bill Ramsey... ^_~)
