At 8/30/07 09:27 AM, Coop83 wrote: In my defence, I'll say that my congratulations lists have something new and interesting every single day.
Yeah, yours do stand out (seriously; I'm not being sarcastic here).
But most of the others, even though the effort is appreciated, are boring. Personally, I think that the music section that (some) people have started to include nowadays are part of the reason - I don't know about others, but I usually don't care about what people listen to (those who think that people DO care about what they listen to could just sign up to last.fm and link to that in their sig), and FWIW, these mostly seem to be intended as statements along the lines of "look at me, I'm so cool because I'm listening to X and Y and Z", anyway. Case in point: has anyone else ever noticed that only a very, very selection of genres is ever present in those lists? Nothing against metal - there's certainly some good metal bands out there -, but for the most part, it just seems to be about making other people think you've got a bigger e-penis by showing how you know/listen to/are a fan of all the coolest bands.
And no, I'm not looking at anyone in particular. In fact, I couldn't even say who's doing this without checking; I usually just skip over those lists entirely.
Well, this has been my Rant Of The Day(tm). :P

I partly agree with you, even though I do that "Listening to"-crap, too.
On the one hand I AM interested in what other people listen to. It tells a lot about a person, in my opinion.
On the other hand you're right: Sometimes it seems that some people (not particularly here on NG, but in general on the internet) put some "cool" or "hardcore"-stuff in those lists.
Well, personally I really listend to those songs I put up there, and I don't care what others think about it (and sometimes only people who understand german can read what I am listening to ;) ). If I listen to "Insane Clown Posse" I put that in there. If the next song Winamp brings up is from Cyndi Lauper (yep, I have two songs from her ;) ), then I put that up there, too.
So, now one may ask why I bother to make a "Listening to:"-List if I don't care what people think about it? Because I am interested in what other people listen to and maybe they are interested what I am listening to. But I still don't care what others think about my taste of music ;)
gee, I think that was the longest post I ever have written on NG ^^

Yes, it's definitely not specific to Newgrounds...

That's good. ^^ FWIW, BTW, I don't actually think that people are not listening to the songs they put in there - I just sometimes have a feeling (again, generally speaking!) that the knowledge that these songs will be listed in a public post may influence what people listen to in the first place.
In other words, I think that some people might just skip over that Cindy Lauper song if it comes up, for example, and hope that something "better" will come up next. Similarly, I think that people whose taste is less "cool", so to speak, may be kept from posting these lists at all for fear of being looked down upon or having their taste sneered at. (Not necessarily openly, of course, but still.)
Ah well. :)
BTW, people who're interested in what *I* listen to can check out my last.fm (which, I freely admit, has more than its fair share of embarassing stuff, from Sesamstraße to Bill Ramsey... ^_~)
Oh, and I also reached a new level, so you'd better get used to this new icon for my posts on the BBS:

My overall B/P rate has dropped into 20something per day. I'm just not thrilled with the portal quality anymore. I rarely vote UJs. Clock day was fun however.
