Nah. IMO, Shrapnel's been the only person depositing for ht52 for so long. Shrapnel's doing medical residency and all that, and working crazy 15-16 hour days and all that.

I think at some point, he stopped depositing for himself and for ht52, but then went back to on and off.

IOW, I think it was more about lack of time and lack of passion than it was about quitting. Hardcore exp depositers never quit for good. It's too damned easy to keep depositing (unlike b/ping).

Yeah, but there might be a time when you don't see the point anymore. Case in point - I used to play Kingdom of Loathing for a while, but in recent weeks (or months), it's just become so incredibly boring that I don't even let KoLmafia (a bot) churn away in the background anymore. It's just not worth it, and I imagine that some people could conceivably feel the same way about NG.

When the whole site becomes irrelevant and a waste of time to someone, I'd actually be surprised if they did not stop depositing - after all, why should they still do so? Things like "I'm the level 30 user" (or "I'm one of the level 30 users") or "I need to defend my XP rank" stop being relevant when the site does.

No offense dude, and I HAVE been away for awhile... but last time the subject came up when I was actually around and reading and posting regularly... posts about nothing but PM amounts = uncool.

PM stats are basically the new "popularity ranking" of NGness.

If you don't know, we had a popularity ranking in our profiles right below the exp and b/p rankings (where the sticker stat is now listed) until September 2003, I think it was, when they cut it out of our profiles and the top 50 list section because it was causing people to load profiles just to boost the damned stat.

I can see the same thing happening with PMing for no point other than to pad the stat if we glorify it.

It's far far more dangerous than enjoying our postcounts, because at least posts are visible to the public and you can't be too much of a jackass without everyone else noticing in public... PMs are, by definition, private... and harder to regulate like that without everyone you send them to being all vigilant and shit or else admins reading our PMs.

So, in short... please don't get off on teh PM stats. It's like your brain on drugs. ;_;

True... but I would hope that a simple thing such as depositing exp for one main account on NG, both in how little time it takes, and in how cool a site NG is and has been for so many years, would weigh a little heavier in NG's direction than KoL or other things such as that.

Why? Simple.

The reason to keep depositing even if NG has lost all its charm to you, is that you recognise there is the possiblity that someday the charm will return, NG will regain its mojo, or you will again become into the site again for your own reasons.

If you're thinking rationally as you detach yourself from NG, you should surely realise that there may come a day when you would kick yourself for missing 10s or 100s of days of deposits.

And that is why, even if I didn't want anything to do with NG for say a year... I would still probably deposit every day.

2 hours of practice still sounds pretty rough. Probably more intense than actually gaming, right? That's how baseball practice is compared to actually playing, at least.

Yeah, I did about 2 hours of fielding drills and bowling practice last night. It was fun and now I'm completely knackered, so might not make the first game of the year -.-

True... but I would hope that a simple thing such as depositing exp for one main account on NG, both in how little time it takes, and in how cool a site NG is and has been for so many years, would weigh a little heavier in NG's direction than KoL or other things such as that.

Who knows. It's easier to do your thing on NG without feeling compelled to do lots of other things and waste more and more time, at least, which I guess makes it less likely that people get so totally fed up they just stop depositing altogether, but... well, I think it's still happening. Maybe not with people who're level 25 or 27 or 29 now and who know they'll never be able to get those levels back if they stop depositing for a significant amount of time, but in the lower levels (where I am, for example), it sure doesn't seem all *that* uncommon. Or at least it seems so to me, given that I keep on moving up through the XP ranks... ;)

The reason to keep depositing even if NG has lost all its charm to you, is that you recognise there is the possiblity that someday the charm will return, NG will regain its mojo, or you will again become into the site again for your own reasons.

You might recognise that, or you might not. I've been running KoLmafia for that reason for the last month or two, but now, even the prospect of coming back some day doesn't motivate me anymore - not even enough to run a bot.

If you're thinking rationally as you detach yourself from NG, you should surely realise that there may come a day when you would kick yourself for missing 10s or 100s of days of deposits.

Maybe. But it's still a trade-off - if you don't expect it to happen, it might still not be worth the cumulative amount of time you're investing.

Offer me 2000 and we may have a deal. I need enough to get my dream desktop computer to even make the idea worth thinking about, when it comes to this account at least, like I said.

Wow, no shock, eh? Impressive. I haven't seen it in years, but I remember it being quite distasteful. I suppose what they say is true: with each passing year, the benchmarks for what is shocking to us just rise and rise and rise and get further out of reach.

Oh, sure it's distasteful... but not shocking, at least not if you know the individual pictures. The whole thing is not bigger (in terms of shockiness) than the sum of its parts. (As for myself, I used to poke around on rotten.com quite a lot in the past, which probably made me at least somewhat shock-resistant. I still find the images icky and disgusting, of course, but not emotionally disturbing.)

Aw, come on, just install Perl (ActivePerl is a good distro if you're on windows), get yourself a copy of "Programming Perl", and start hacking away! ^^ It's fun, and Perl is a very relaxed and friendly language, too (and CPAN will have a module for just about anything you want to do, too).
