If you told me 33% have silver, 33% have gold, and 33% have deity I'd still think that was likely inaccurate, but certainly far closer to the truth.

As a silver who was near gold for the past two years, I resent the implication that somehow silvers becoming deity makes deity a worthless rank now.

I kinda wish I'd gained gold at some point on my own merits, but I appreciate that instantly jumping to deity, especially when I've hardly marked any reviews in the past year... and marked NO flashes since like June 2005... = I was pretty badass in 2003/2004.

I don't think Pimp will stop completely, but maybe he'll start missing 10 exp here and there more often.

What I was contesting about your post wasn't that deity was cooler back before this change in the system (of course it was), and it's not that you weren't the one and only deity quite recently (of course you were)... it was simply this:

There is no way that, as you said, "deity is now as common as silver was and is," because there were 10s of thousands of people with silver whistles back before the change. And even if there's 100 or 200 deities now... hell, even 500 deities now. 500 deities now is still not as many people as the thousands and thousands of silver whistles we used to have.

That's all I was getting at with the "99% of people with whistles above normal were silver under the old system. Nowhere near 99% of people with whistles above normal are deity now. Hell, I doubt even 33% are. So there's no way there's more deities now than their USED to be silvers." Is that more understandable now? I thought it was to begin with from my 99% thing in the original post, but apparently it wasn't... I think that's because you totally misunderstood what my "that isn't true" part was in response to and got defensive because you thought you had "yet another doubter" on your hands or something.

Back under the old system, we didn't need that. Everyone knew who had the deity whistle because they could see it in the profiles. NOWADAYS, yes... a top 50 list would be quite welcome.

But please, let's have our priorities straight. VP is a much older stat, and we still don't have VP ranks in our profiles or a top 50 VP list.

And hell, at least whistles are a sort of rank, and everyone has that in their profile... VP just gets a number, with no basis for comparison except that users like Captain Bob, Newgrundling, myself, and Wylo have been making SURE there's a basis for comparison for years now in making a user-run VP list. ;_;

There was a reason they removed that system. before when that system was in play the top user had more power then anyone else and not only that but could weaken everyone else below them. So the only way that idea would do any good was if they add it just for show without it being any power then the next rank below it.

As for the whistle scale to tell you how many whistle points you have I said it before and I will say it again bad Idea. I been reading the BBS and there have been people who been flagging everything they see just to get a deity whistle. Some people have been flagging so recklessly that the review mods have been given extra work in clearing the flags. Showing the whistle points will only make this worse. Also there is also the abuse factor as well. In the past people have been massflagging flash movies unfairly to get whistle points or just get rid of stuff they can't blam. If the whistle points are shown to the public then people may start to flag anything that would normally get blammed for whistle points instead of letting it get blammed making more work for the NG staff. Besides there is a good reason the Ng staff never displayed the whistle points in the first place.

Well, such a scale could certainly have a column on the top 50 whistle list, if such a thing were to be created. But I doubt it would be shown in our profiles. After all, the reason for a little graphical icon of a whistle in our profile is that the admins never intended to just flat out show either "whistle points" or "whistle power," even though both things obviously exist.

Apparently Washu has like... I dunno, 20,000+ whistle points or so?

And of course, all of us review mods knew that the whistle power scale went from 0 (well, possibly negative territory as well for teh garbage whistles, but I never personally tested that, because I've never had an account with a garbage whistle) to 3.00, with 2.00 being the boundary between silver and gold (I think at my highest, I was between 1.80 and 1.90... so close to gold yet so far, because of my low participation levels).

And now, apparently, the WP scale goes up to 5.00, which is nifty.

So anyway, though, all these technical underpinnings to the whistle system aren't really meant for teh regular users to worry about, obsess over, and start making stat posts about it. The great thing about the simple whistle ranks is that people say "hey, nifty, I'm ____," and then they leave it at that.

Just imagine how much less spam there would be about b/p if we could only see our b/p rank badges, but not actually our blam and save counts (kinda like people without profiles, I guess).

Sure, it'd be frustrating, but that's only because we've HAD access to those stats in the past. If it was shut off all at once, it'd suck.

But we never had access to whistle stats, except for review mods and even we didn't get the full picture... so why start now?

Now that's a great idea, though. I dunno if the secondary thing that'd be like gold is necessary, though. Why not just have deity for the person or persons at the top of the whistle point scale... and then platinum for the 80%-99.999% percentile... Kinda like the old gold, with its 2.00-2.99 WP range...

Exactly. And that way the top user at least stands out from the crowd, even if that top user isn't scaling everything below them like HT/Pimp do with exp/levels/VP.

You'd get the best part of a 1337 unique top rank... without the worst part (being responsible for the pain of thousands of users #;-}>).

Yeah, it'd made things worse especially when users start to lose a lot of WP and even full whistle ranks from mods having to clear flags from unfairly marked reviews and then... whoops, a lot of people lose whistle power and... start to bitch about it. And they'd bitch even more if they could see EXACTLY how many points they lost.

Nah, deity should stay the top, like Cereal said... they should add new levels between gold and deity, or else further down.

Kinda like with b/p ranks. If they add new b/p ranks fine (well, I'd prefer they didn't, but anywho), but don't add them above Elite Guard Supreme Commander. That wouldn't make any sense, unless you're going to create 5+ brand new ranks in some sort of "far better than the Elite Guard" type thing. But then Supreme Commander is going to look stupid as a title, so it'll have to be changed to Elite Guard Five-Star General or something, so as to not look insane for 5+ ranks to be above it.

Actually, it'll be even more, probably, since levels 1 to 9 don't really count. Instead of 21 "real" levels, we'll have 51, so it'll be about 15 levels that correspond to the six I mentioned. But then, I pretty much pulled that figure out of my behind, anyway. :)

But yeah, you're right, of course... but at least, there'll be more levels I *will* be able to reach. :) If I can level up more often than twice a year or so, I'll be happier already; the new system is just band-aid, but that's still better than nothing (and judging from the icons Tom posted, it's gonna be purdy band-aid, too).

Yeah, but that also may have to do with the fact that 60k is a relatively "round" number; many people also (mostly) retire after reaching 30k, for example. :) I know that I myself have certainly felt some kind of burn-out; when there's no real goals to reach anymore, it's hard to motivate yourself. 40k, 50k and 60k are goals, of course, but after you reach them, there's nothing left to do for quite a while anymore, especially when the next person on the rank list is more than 12k ahead of you (so passing them is not something that's going to be easy or come quickly, either).

Myself, I'm kinda thinking about retiring (or at least not taking gaining points as serious anymore) after reaching 100k, but I really have no idea whether I'll do that yet. In the meantime, I've got my sights set on 20k saves, 50k blams, 70k points, passing ReconRebel (which might not actually happen, though), and so on. Eventually, I'd also like to get 30k saves, just so I can say I'm an EGSC of saves as well. :)

IOW, I may not be the summit of Everest, but I'm a camp wayyyyy above the basecamp, and just getting up to my level = you've earned yourself a pat on the back and a good rest and some congrats.
