But I also think that there is a certain grain of truth in it, because there seem to be a number of people (you, gfox etc.) who seem to subscribe to a kind of "targeted voting" philosophy. That's definitely different from what I do; when I vote on new submissions (which, for the purpose of this discussion, also includes the decision not to vote on a movie at all), I completely disregard the amount of either blams or saves I have - I just say "this movies deserves an X, IMO", so I give it an X (whatever "X" may be).

Not that I want to say that people who don't do that vote high on crap or low on quality stuff just to bolster their saves or blams, or to keep (or get back to, or closer to) a certain ratio - that would be something I wouldn't really be comfortable with, but deciding to not vote at all in order to maintain your ratio is perfectly fine, of course.

Still, it's something I wouldn't consider for myself, or - for that matter - something I even understand. For me, the number of blams I have, the number of saves, and the ratio of the two values are just observable parameters that do not carry any inherent quality - they're not inherently good, bad, or anything like that, so I just take them at face value, no matter what they are.

In other words, I simply seem them as things I observe, not things I actively try to change in any way (not counting the fact that I vote on stuff under submission to get points, without specifying whether they should be saves or blams).

No, I haven't - I'm not usually a big fan of Neil Gaiman. I once tried reading "Good Omens", mostly because I enjoyed the "Sandman" series and because Terry Pratchett is one of my favourite authors, but I didn't really like it.

I'll look into this one some time, though. I don't really have anything to read right now, anyway... :)
