When you retire your b/p count, you accept these things as an inevitable thing. It's amazing enough it took 2+ months to get passed at all. The fact that three people will be passing me within a month's span is... well, shrug-inducing. Like I just said, I like the number 6, so I'll be fine with being ranked #6 again (I did come through it on the way up, yanno).

I just don't want X-Naut to pass me soon, because I was at #7 on the way up for soooo damned long, and I don't like the number that much (see my 36 and 37 eccentricities, they apply to 6 and 7 on their own in a proportionally smaller manner)... so if he passes me at some point, I have to hope that the next person isn't too far back so I can slide into 8th place.

No problem. :) Yeah, you have to wait until the panel appears, but you could also look at the traffic going back and forth and then create a tool that automatically votes on all new entries, for example. The delay until the panel appears only guards against people who actually use a browser. :)

But are you really neutral just because you have a 50:50 ratio? I'd say you only are if there's an equal amount of good and bad submissions to the portal, too, but the crap actually outweighs the good stuff, and I think a true neutral user would be someone whose blam/save ratio matches the ratio of bad vs. good stuff that is uploaded to the portal.

For me, that's pretty much the same thing in the end, actually. I'm ultimately congratulating people because they've reached a certain rank; but when you're as high as that, then any increase in rank also means that not only are you passing someone else, but that it's also a relatively major thing.

Oh well. Hard to explain, but I don't see a difference there, myself, and in any case, it's really the increase in ranking that I like to congratulate people on, anyway.

Like I said, I consider maintaining a roughly 50:50 ratio, such as gfoxclock and Sadic and... uh... who's that guy with like 2200 blams and 2200 saves? Anyway, people like us with our nifty 50:50ness I consider TRUE neutral.

Because in a perfect world.... In a world where the truth that half of everything is crap and half of everything is worthy and thus 0 is the true average... then 50:50 is the balance point between the crap half and the worthy half.

Of COURSE half of the entries on NG aren't protectable. I'd argue it's closer to 1/3 that are protectable than the 1/5 to 1/4 that tend to get protected, but that's neither here nor there. THIS account's ratio... the ratio I ended my main account b/p career on, is 36/24 or 3/2 or 1.5 to 1. 1.5 blams for every 1 save is still more "good" than the NG portal's balance, but I consider this account's balance to be more "attuned to NG."

But like I said, I consider the actual balance of b/p in the portal to be "NG-unbalanced," and hence I described gfoxclock's quest for true neutrality as "neutrality in the truest, least-NG-unbalanced manner." Yes, but what I'm saying is... when it comes to the people who have begun to pass me, I haven't seen them congratulated for reaching a certain rank (such as 4 for Denvish, 5 for bila, and soon to be 6 for Recon). Instead, the focus seems to be on "gfox got knocked back a rank!" Now, that's entirely fair to phrase it that way, because... after all, I did. Not due to being passed in a race, but more due to lack of... participation as of 10/04/2005.

My point is only that when we talk about things in such ways, I think it shifts the focus off what should be congratulated. Which is the attaining of a new point total (60k+) and the attaining of a new rank (be it 2, 3, 4, 5, or soon to be 6... sadly, no one ever got rank #1 from me, since I never got to rank #1. But any other rank... fair game to pass me for it).

And THIRD after those two things is that I was the one who got passed. I = not the main story of someone's accomplishment, that's all I'm saying.

When I passed people for ranks #5, 4, 3, and finally 2, for example, I may have noticed who I passed and felt kinda "ooo, I'm ahead of so-and-so now," especially in the cases of TheJoe324 and Crono, two b/pers I had looked up to for quite some time, and then I passed them both within 2 days in April 2004.... but gaining the rank spot was the important part to me, and I don't like to dwell on the fact that I knocked two guys I consider friends down a peg. I would hope the same is true for people passing me who respect or like or whatever me. That the rank spot and the forward b/p progress is the important thing to them. Not knocking me down a peg.

No. :) I don't think you can argue that the portal is actually unbalanced, either - at least not when you judge the amount of good and bad submissions (as opposed to the amount that gets saved and blammed, respectively). Sure, there are more bad ones than good ones, but I don't think that automatically means imbalance: it simply is the way things are. And if reality doesn't match one's expectations, then it's those expectations that are wrong, not reality.

So I don't think you're truly neutral, either - true neutrality, for me, would mean that you're free from any kind of personal opinion and only judge flashes based on objective merit, so that your blam/save ratio would precisely (or, given portal artifacts, at least almost precisely) match the ratio of bad vs. good flash submissions.

But that's just me. :)

When I passed people for ranks #5, 4, 3, and finally 2, for example, I may have noticed who I passed and felt kinda "ooo, I'm ahead of so-and-so now," especially in the cases of TheJoe324 and Crono, two b/pers I had looked up to for quite some time, and then I passed them both within 2 days in April 2004.... but gaining the rank spot was the important part to me, and I don't like to dwell on the fact that I knocked two guys I consider friends down a peg. I would hope the same is true for people passing me who respect or like or whatever me. That the rank spot and the forward b/p progress is the important thing to them. Not knocking me down a peg.

*noddles* Yeah, that's the way I feel, too. When I pass someone (a relatively rare occurence these days), I don't think "woo, I passed X", but rather "woo, I gained a rank".

If I were to make such a club, it would start with levels 16, 24, and 25... but levels 20 and 15 wouldn't be too far behind. Those 5 are my ultimate favourite (as opposed to the 5 fave I've already HAD as my level, which is what the listing in the above post was all about, of course).

Levels are teh fun. CONGRATS ON ALL THE LEVEL UPS HERE IN LEVEL UP. Having levelled both gfoxcook to 20 and gfoxclock to 17 and gfox not quite yet to 15 (give it a few more weeks, but it WILL be in January)... I am all out of fresh levels for now... BUT... I have a feeling that a certain gfoxclock will be hitting 1000 b/p this weekend, unless I totally don't b/p at all, so... a new b/p rank awaits. LEVELS AND RANKS AND LEVELS OH MY.

Well, you can still add a gfoxglock and gfoxlock and so on, too... more alts to level up. ^_~

Let's just put it this way, the NG portal is a flawed and human thing, and THAT to me is why there are more blams than saves 95%+ of the time. It's not because that's the way things are, damnit! We could fight to change it. But not enough of us have the flash skills, the time, and the dedication to change things on both the submission and the voting side of things ourselves.

Also, to touch on something I said in that last post: In a perfect world NG would have way more saves than blams, actually. So it doesn't even take a PERFECT world to make the balance on the portal closer to 50:50. It just takes a better pool of artists/submitters.

And BTW, I never said I came to the portal with the expectation that saves would be easier to get than blams or anything. The only day that's true is days like Clock Day, when saves run like a blood river in a time of slaughter. Mmmm... blood river of saves.

But there are a select few, like Toocool, who show us the way: blams can be spurned. And if enough artists changed, or enough voters changed, or preferably BOTH... the portal COULD have more saves than blams every now and then when it's not a special Clock or Lock or Daily Toon or Halloween or Christmas whatever else NG day/holiday to help it have more saves than usual.

So I don't think you're truly neutral, either - true neutrality, for me, would mean that you're free from any kind of personal opinion and only judge flashes based on objective merit, so that your blam/save ratio would precisely (or, given portal artifacts, at least almost precisely) match the ratio of bad vs. good flash submissions.

But the type of neutrality I'm talking about has nothing to do with how you judge movies... either objectively or negatively. I'm talking SHEER numbers. Take saves and subtract blams. Most have a negative number (including this account). Some have a positive number (Toocool being the person on the site with the biggest number of all with this method of examining b/p stats).

But VERY VERY few have near or exactly 0. And that is why it's such a holy grail to raise our b/p while keeping our ratio near 1:1 for myself and others of like mind. It's a goal I once had with gfoxcook, back at 6000 blams and 6000 saves, but my desire for rankups and getting higher in the rankings overruled my number-love side. With my alt, I don't care about getting ahead in rank OR ranking. I'm just raising the numbers together, trying to keep them as close as possible forevah and evah. I think it's a good goal.

Now, whether it's the kind of perfect balance that's fine on NG (IMO) or doesn't fit with the way the NG portal is actually balanced (unbalanced IMO) as in your view... eh. Take it or leave it. #;-}>

The blackness is part of what makes 20 so great, though. So 27 doesn't make my top 5. Maybe my top 10, but... eh.

gfoxcook/gfoxclock/gfox = enough gfox-related alts. I have 999999th and 1000000th as well, yanno. But they're forever level 1s. I don't want to deposit for 5 accounts. 3 is enough. And no, I ain't renaming them to glock and lock, either. #;-}>
