Usually, you make up a new connection or edit your existing connection. First, read the instructions provided by the Wi-Fi router. If you still having problems and you have Windows, go to Control Panel >> Network Connections. There is a connection called "Local Area Connection". You must enable it in order to be connected.
That works for the standard router, but I believe you should create a new connection. It is easy to do. Just click "Create a new connection" and follow the wizard.
Make sure that connect the modem to DSL/Cable line, connect the router to the modem, and connect the PC's Ethernet to the router. Also, make sure to install the software that comes with the router in order the get the router working, as well as placing locks to prohibit outside connections.
I do not have a Wi-Fi router, so I cannot fully help you.
