How do you get rid of background noise w/out noticably distorting your voice?
There are several variables to contend with. And finding the right balance is the key. CEP is awesome, its what i use to track my voice. First the obvious. That high pitched squeel is probably around 15khz, thats from your monitor. Move the mic away (unless its build into the monitor). As far away as possible, and aim it away as well.
OK. Background noise can be tricky. Shut windows and doors, throw a blanket over the front of your PC... ummm, shut off as many lights or anything else making noise. Use your ears. Remember what you hear in the room will seem 10x as loud on the mic.
After recording, what I do is this: Reduce the empty spaces between lines to silence. CEP has a good noise gate for this. Go to effects:amplitude:dynamics processing. Select from the list "Gate that compressor!". This simultaniously boosts the volume of the voive and reduces the noise between words.
*Once you've done that you may wish to make this a keystroke: go to favorites:edit favorites, click new, enter keystroke (i use alt-G) enter the name (i use "voice gate") click copy from last, and click save. Now when you edit, just highlight the area and click alt-G.
Now, this won't eliminate all the noise. But it should be a good start. The next step would be to buy a nicer mic, or get an external soundcard. But that involves spending $$$, and we all hate doing that...
This should help, let me know how your results turn out.
