Giving Blood

So I gave blood today for the second time in my life (our school host an annual blood drive twice a year, and you need to be 17 or older to participate). It was a good time, you get to sit around and stuff and you get tons of free animal crackers (quite obviously the best food ever made). And free drinks, did I mention that?

Well anyway, I got to help out for the rest of the day and I ended up only going to 15 minutes of my English class and then all of clayworks.

Anyone else here ever give blood? Discuss some blood giving stories and maybe in my next post I'll tell you some of my puking/ passing out stories, in the mean time I'm off to work.

I gave blood once. Its kinda scary when you see it coming out along the tube and you feel kinda weakened after. But its for a good cause so I didn't mind doing it

I've given blood a few times, but when they couldn't get a full bag out of me, they sent me to the doctor and told me I was anemic. Apparently I need to eat more meat.

Not to rain on your parades... but you must be 17 to give blood for the Red Cross. Unless you two live in different countries and/or are getting this mixed up with getting blood drawn for medical purposes, then I'm pretty sure you haven't given blood.

sorry you think that way. The reward for me is that I'm helping people out, but for some of my friends it means they can be the cheap drunk on friday night. Anyway, you can give direct donations to people, that would allow you to meet the person who's life you save, but on average one pint of blood saves about 2 or so lives. That gives me a good feeling and helps me make up for being an asshole.

I know what you mean, someone who was giving blood today couldn't get a full bag for some reason or another. And then another person had veins that were too small for them to be able to do it well enough.

I'm sorry to hear you can't forgo a small amount of pain and get over your fear to get blood drawn. I'm afraid of needles and that sort of stuff too, you should see me on the table, I'm practically shaking before they give it. It didn't help that the lady missed my vein the first time, so she had to adjust the needle to find it. I usually try not to let my fears dictate what I do, and for the most part I've been able to triumph over them, just work at it, eventually I'm sure you'll be able to give blood at least once. As for the whole Hitler thing, I don't care. Just because the life you save is evil doesn't make you any less of a good person for giving the blood to save it, in fact, I would say giving blood to save someone even if they were an abomination to the human race makes you a much better person than 99% of humans.

I know I should give blood, I really should. And the only excuse that I have not to is that I really don't like being stabbed with pointy things and bleeding into a bag. Not the best of reasons to not do something, but it's all I've got.

As to the anemic thing...yeah. Eat more red meat. I was anemic a while back (like...14 years or something), and my mom fed me red meat for a month. Best month of my life.

Excuse me for sounding a little dumb here, but how do they actually test whether people's blood is safe or not; i.e. whether it is HIV infected, etc.?

Do they check the individual and then withdraw the blood, or do they take the blood and test it at the lab?

It seems puzzling to me - at contraceptive clinics, they only test for HIV a certain amount of weeks after you have engaged in unprotected sexual activity, because it takes about that long to propogate itself and be detectable. Does this mean they incubate the blood they withdraw for a number of weeks after they extract it, to test for this?

Sounds like a very complicated procedure to me if they do...

The only reason ive ever given blood is for tests.. And everytime ive done it i hated it. Its not fun having a needle stuck in your arm and watching your red red krovvy seep into a tiny vial..

I'd encourage everyone who can give blood to give blood. Hey, it's a free cookie right?

I know people who give blood and needed blood and I wish that I could give. Both of my parents have given more than a gallon of blood and my father has given more than two. It's so important.

Glad you asked, now that I'm back from work, The Incredibles (awesome movie, I recommend it to everyone), and off-roading in my friends Bronco, I'm good to let loose with some stories.

The first one is from last year when I first gave. This kid was sitting there and he told us that he was fine after we told him he looked pale. Then he leaned over and rested his face on the girl next to him. (Dialogue mode... go!)
"Cut it out Ben."
"I mean it, stop."
"BEN!"
"C'mon, people are starting to stare."
"Ok, I'm going to get up now..."
so she starts to get up and he keeps leaning on her and then just falls over. Everybody thought he was joking about the whole thing while he was really unconscious. The girl of course felt really bad, because she was volunteering and should have noticed that and helped.

And then today another girl (funnily enough the sister of the girl in the last story) looked over to the people on the other side of the table and just randomly said "I'm sorry guys" and then leaned over and threw up all over the place. If I hadn't been light-headed still from just giving blood I probably would have moved away or something, but at the time I just sat there wondering why that didn't bother me in the slightest.

There's another passing out story, but its not all that interesting (I didn't get to see it close up and first-hand). Hmm, I think I might ask peoples' opinions on off-roading, because doing it in a completely stock 80's bronco is absolutely awesome. We stalled out after going through this huge puddle and almost got stuck about 2 miles from the nearest road and about 8 miles from our other cars. As it is we think he fucked up his pistons.

Dual update:
-We do not know what happened to the Bronco. It is yet to be fully fixed. He is going to put it back together and bring it to a mechanic, as this is beyond his level of automotive knowledge

-I got my blood donor card (it looks cool and having my name spelled right on the card is a huge plus).

Bumped because I will be giving blood tomorrow for the third time in my eligible life... making me better than about... 99.999 % of the population.

All of you are misers when it comes to draining out some fluids. Anybody else have any blood giving stories or experiences?
