Cancelled games you yearn for? 2025-06-23 17:51:23

Hey Newgrounds, Nano here. I'd like to discuss cancelled games you're not over.

For me, I am still yearning over the cancelled Resident Evil 4 version, the Castle version. It was gonna take the Resident Evil fixed camera style to the next level, pushing the Gamecube to it's limits tech-wise. And the story was gonna be crazy too....Leon would invade the Umbrella HQ, the Spencer Castle, in Europe to take them down. That would have been so cool to play and beat.

Unfortunately, the games industry has escalated to impossible heights, and such a game wouldn't be possible today even with today's tech. Resident Evil games have become so mainstream and casual that a fixed camera tank controlling game wouldn't appeal to those newer fans, that came in with the recent REmakes, let alone the average gamer now. Everything now either has to be over the shoulder, which the finished product of RE4 pioneered, or first person, barf.

That is why I wish for more information on this game....even a leak/s of builds of this vintage style of survival horror that would never be made again by the company responsible for it's development, Capcom.

I played and beat the final released version of RE4 for years, and there was a time where I really cherised Leon's rescuing of the president's daughter thing going on in that version. But the scrapped Castle version's storyline had much more to do with the prior entries and focused on the horror aspect much more and was gonna be so important to the storyline with the focus being to take down the main bad guys Umbrella directly in their core.....what could've been.

So Newgrounds, do you have any cancelled games you yearn for?

Just to name a few:

  • Prey 2 from human head studios that was the sequel for Prey 2006.
  • The cancelled Avengers FPS from THQ.
  • Destiny (the 2013 version).
  • The Spider-Man 4 game that would've been the tie-in game to the theoretical Sam Raimi's 4th movie.
  • Starcraft Ghost.

This Plants VS Zombies action game code-named "Hot Tub"

It makes my blood boil that this was canned for another fucking Star Wars game (one that also died according to the title).

Remember Steam Greenlight? Two titles I was interested in:

Emergent open-world systems driven assassin game. I would've loved to see how this plays out. No scripting, no handholding, no linearity. You're on your own. Sadly Dan Stubbs has become a bit of an online ghost and last I heard he's redeveloping it from scratch, which is always a bad sign for projects in development hell. You stick with what you've got and you see it through, not start all over again if you don't have a vertical slice to show.

Before Payday the Heist was even released, some awesome guys had an idea of putting that scenario in a versus Counter-Strike like scenario. I was hooked. But nothing. Prototype broken. Payday's great but too arcadey for me with all the hordes and perks. I would fucking LOVE a multiplayer component, and this was the best concept I've seen of that. I've seen a couple other cops and robbers type scenarios but nothing ever gave me that same rich tense feeling as this did.

Star Wars 1313 is the one cancelled game that still stings for me whenever I think about it. The footage showed looked like the game had a lot of potential, and a Star Wars game that covers the criminal underworld is a underutilized premise I would love to play through.

007 Risico was supposed to be the sequel of 007 Bloodstone, unfortunataly it got cancelled due to poor sales of it's predecessor and financial problems at MGM.

ALICE ASYLUM

I would love to have the final game in the American Mcgee's Alice series cuz i really like Madness Returns and the OG. Sadly EA fucked Mcgee over and he moved on to other projects since Alice was no longer his project. It didn't even pass the concept stage before being rejected. Which sucks cuz it such a interesting take on the original Alice in Wonderland book. Maybe someone can get it from EA someday to complete the final game but with the fact Madness Returns both had a big reassurance on Tiktok and the game can be bought via Steam and other platforms, it's unlikely.

Fuck EA, those greedy bastards.

The project bible is still available to few but as for the game is uncertain. Mcgee started a new project called Dreadful Plushies and fell into the "I'm a major jackass" phase. Damn we could had been in a better timeline ig

Nah, most of it just got left in Japan. What I'm referring to as "canceled" are the games that never got an English localization. RPGs, mainly. The Saturn's international presence kinda died at the worst possible time.

Capcom Fighting All Stars, Crash Bandicoot 5, that one Superman game by Factor 5, and Marvel Chaos.

These two just recently got cancelled so they're fresh on my mind: Hytale and the Hypnospace Outlaw sequel (Dreamsettler).

I always wanted something new to scratch the Minecraft itch but after years of waiting my hype died down. Dreamsettler makes me sadder because Hypnospace was such a cool "fake operating system/internet" game and just got announced not too long ago in comparison.

For something that's older, Terraria Otherworld looked pretty neat, but I think some concepts they had for that just ended up in Terraria anyway? Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

It would have explored the town of Silent Hill how it all started out. Probably focusing on the everyday life’s of it’s citizens and events. Just an ordinary lively town and over time throughout the process of the game, starting out very normal and full of life, slowly deteriorating and becoming the more dark and haunted, nearly empty and abandoned town we all know it as it is today.

Senran Kagura 7even... Announced for a 2018 release, which was cancelled followed by the producer of the series leaving a year later.

American mcgees next alice (asylum) is sadly never going to happen thanks to EA not seeing the value in it. They rejected the pitch but own the ip. I was super excited with all the concept designs, and work being put in. It was a huge bummer to hear the news. I do wish they'd change their mind, but it seems unlikely. Especially considering it's been 14 years since the last release.

Resident Evil Castle Version looks great, would have loved to get my hands on it.

There was a game "HellRaid" that I don't think ever got past the teaser and initial trailer, my friend and I where quite excited for a grim dark co-op game, but it was not to be.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oyk_IbJfT8I&ab_channel=GameSpot

I'll include Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 as well, It SHOULD be out this year but it was also due for release like, four years ago, then it was pushed back and a new developer took over so I'm not overly hopeful that we will actually get it.
