The actual reason he's so hard is because of the availability is because of the only pokemon available, the only pokemon you have is your starter and lousy insects, ratata, pidgey etc...

butterfree can learn confusion, which deals neutral damage, but still... later gens adding double kick to nidoran made things WAY easier.

True but like you said earlier you need to grind to get butterfree with confusion

This boss is abysmal and I have never got past it a single time

Goddamn I haven't touched that game in over 20 years but I can still vividly see that fucking slope and hear the boss theme in my head. That was the first game I ever owned and the scars run deep.

Did you choose charmander? I feel like squirtle and bulbasaur both make quick work of Brock's rock-types.

i had to try all 3 starters. the 1st grass type move available (leech seed) wasn't of much use against brock, so you'd have to grind all the way to level 13 for vine whip if you picked bulbasaur. and even with squirtle, i'd still have to grind until level 8 to get an useful move.

The Minotaur in SMT4,It hits really hard, has a good chunk of health and the mechanics of the game plus the fact that you can get Walter as your partner in that fight means that Minotaur can just remove you from planet earth if:

  • Walter uses agi at any point(he nullifies and hits harder and dodges most attacks)
  • he crits you and you die
  • he crits you and you survive(he gets another turn and hits harder and dodges most attacks)
  • he kills your healer demons
  • he hits any weakness(he gets another turn and hits harder and dodges most attacks)
  • he kills the demons that resisted his attacks.(you have to choose between having one turn less or read above)
  • you answer one of his dialogues wrong at a bad point in the fight(or even a good point if you aren't prepared)

This fight is also super early in the game so unless you get lucky with a fusion accident like me you only have like 1 demon that hits its weakness if you don't fuse and 2 that resist/absorb his attacks,he uses buffs and debuffs like any good SMT player should, and one of his attacks has high crit rate.

this is the hardest fight in the base game besides the fiends btw,it only gets easier from there.

I think everyone actually needs to see the stupid ass boss battle

My picks are Phantom from the first Devil May Cry game and Minotaur from SMT 4

I can now beat phantom very easily thanks to DMD, and Minotaur I (a long time ago) beat in SMT 4 NG+ (still haven't beaten it) by having armor that nulls phys attacks.

Both good bosses that enforce the fundamentals of the games, so I respect them and their difficulty.

The first boss of Descent 1 is an absolute monster. It fires missiles that explode into homing bomblets, which is something you haven't seen before in that game. It can also cloak and teleport around the boss room, sometimes choosing to appear for just a second to fire missiles at you from an unexpected angle. It's also surrounded by strong enemies that need to be taken out first. There are only 2 power-ups to deal with it, and one of them is in an unintuitive place where you might pick it up and use it before the battle. The other is a cloaking device to make yourself invisible in the boss arena itself, but you reveal your location when you shoot, and the boss will take potshots at you once you do that (you'll see in the attached video that the boss does get lucky with potshots). There are some shield and missile pickups in small corridors sheltered from the main area of the boss arena, but the boss can shoot into these corridors if it knows you're there.

Overall, it's an extremely deadly enemy using weapons that you haven't had to deal with up to that point. Descent 1's difficulty scaling leans towards old-school videogame difficulty, and the boss doubles down on this. It's not impossible, though. If you take out the minions, it's entirely manageable 1v1. The main missiles it fires don't home in on you, so if you dodge the clouds of bomblets, you can win the fight without taking a hit. You can even kind of stunlock it if you hit it enough. But it's a cruel surprise when you don't know what's coming, and makes for a very efficient newbie killer.

I made a quick video of the fight to show you guys what I mean.

It's just a mean encounter. It was also the final boss of the shareware version of the game, so if you got this game for free back in the day, the boss was designed to kick YOUR ASS SPECIFICALLY.
