Let's talk Aliens! Do you like characters that are aliens? Do you have an OC that's an alien? What kind of alien appeals to you? Grotesque, cute, humanoid, non-humanoid? Maybe Hominid?

Do you think aliens are real? Maybe walk among us?

Let's chat about 'em!

I drew this alien girl a while back :)

The colors are very weird, I was still trying to figure out how to use color properly, color theory etc (´◡`)

I like when people draw alien OC's with big black eyes, they're funny! (=ↀωↀ=)

I'm a big fan of bright colors when it comes to aliens, so I approve. Red hair, blue skin? Nice combo!

Ooh yes! Big black eyes can be really expressive too!

My sona is an alien. Spesificaly he is like made of flammeble space matter rather then being a common depiction of a gray one. I just like the idea of a creature made of space matter.

That's a cool concept. So is he able to use the space matter or is he just space matter?

I think space sci-fi does them great when it's not just about Humans Vs Aliens.

Mass Effect did a great job at making you care for creatures of outer space..

Also, the fact if an human goes to another planet make Them the Aliens,

and this script rarely was touched on.

Like, Avatar (Blue people with tails) did it right.

But the sequel kinda missed the mark..

Anyway.

Rick and Morty did few things right.. And wrong of course. But I like when

the theme of outer space creatures are not just stereotypes or

re-hatched ideas.

I wish we had variety in the mix, like a more emotional connection to the worlds out there.

Even if I know we are too likely to never see a second sentient race that can build

shit to a higher degree than us.

I don't recall drawing any aliens, ever. Not in years.

Though I am developing a game that includes alien species. Quite a few have been conceptualized, but no concept art.

Have life started and evolved elsewhere in the Universe? - That would seem almost inevitable that it has happened and will continue to happen.

Are there lifeforms elsewhere in the universe sufficiently similar to us that we could have some sort of communication with them, that exist in this time frame? - Possibly, but I see no way to calculate likelihood. The time factor being perhaps the most tricky part.

Are there lifeforms elsewhere in this time frame that have the capability to come here? - I doubt it, and if not, that might be a good thing. If they have the capability to come here, they would most likely also have the capability to wipe us out and possibly the inclination to do it. Similar events within Earth history are not promising.

Are aliens good to use in fiction? - Yes.

My main alien character is special agent Yaz KreJonns of the Space Rangers.

Largely inspired by Star Trek (original series).

I think it makes sense to assume that there is other life in the universe, we're here after all, but it's not a given and I wouldn't be surprised if we never see it either way. I'm betting on single-celled organisms and such if we do find anything.

As for my art, I mostly draw Star Wars stuff so I am required to love aliens! I like all kinds really but I mostly stick to the cute photogenic ones in my work, which means they mostly look like humans with a different colour palette lol. And a lot of the time I end up drawing characters in helmets anyway so you usually don't even get to see those colours.

Interesting topic! I don't have any alien OCs for now. But if I were to flesh out any alien-inspired story, I'd like to approach it from the standpoint of speculative biology. Life can take shape in so many ways beyond our comprehension, and does not care about what we think is possible.

As such my favorite type of alien stories are the ones that get really wacky and outlandish with their designs and environments, straying far away from making real-life equivalents, yet maintaining a sense of cohesion and "logic" to their anatomy and role in their home planet (otherwise you'd just be making magical creatures, lol).

P.S. Yes, I do believe in aliens!

Only if aliens don't look anything like humans. You'd have to be so self-centered to think that every living creature in the universe just so happens to look like you. Bullshit. It'll be some non-carbon living rocks situation or an entire planet with a breathing non-Newtonian heart or some other fucked up incomprehensible thing because we only feel like we know everything on this tiny puny rock.

We put human qualities onto non-human characters because it's cute and relatable. The humanly impossible to comprehend depth of the near infinite cosmos is anything but cute and relatable. You will be in disbelief, awe, have every preconceived notion you have of life and what matters shattered, and probably die a horrible death if you were ever lucky enough to encounter an alien. Remember Clarke: "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

i'll confess one of the reasons why i decided against watching the live action series version of his dark materials trilogy was the fact that they got rid of the mulefa's more alien features (the other reasons are OT for this thread).

Oh, that is so true. Very few series actually touch on humans being aliens. I like series like that.

I think the Avatar sequel did some good things. I love the introduction of the Space Whales, which mimics what happened on Earth as far as why exploration continued (whaling). I think the third one might tie the first two together better. I believe in James Cameron. The man don't miss.

Anyway.

I like those aliens too. The creativity the early seasons showed was really good.

It's up to us to create the variety for now! I hope that I do see something from another planet in my time, or that we have and we're not sure yet. I hold out hope for it.

Live action series get a pass because pulling off really convincing alien aliens is nigh-impossible on a very limited budget. Compare the alien costumes of the original Star Trek, where they were necessarily limited by costume budget, and the animated series where they could draw whatever the hell they wanted.

I think it's cool there's some debate whether they're humanoid or not! I'm not even sure myself. I almost feel the bipedal stance with graspers is the answer towards building a huge society. There are lots of intelligent animals out there, but we're winning mostly because of these hands. Dogs and parrots are quite smart and can use their mouths, but that's so awkward in comparison. Bipedalism and thumbs ftw!

Btw, I'm doing a stream on aliens tonight (Wed 4/2). Check my newsbox for info.

On Earth, yes. But only on Earth. On non-Earth environments, i.e. the rest of the universe, the entire meta changes. The universe is a big big big place. Bipedalism and brainpower won't work on Xivox-2 where the non-carbon supporting biosphere lives in its liquid ocean or on HD 85512 where you need to produce sulfur to not get instantly sublimated.

Ah, so you believe there are non-carbon beings. I do want to believe that theory. I mean, life is crazy to begin with! Silicon based beings would be interesting to find. Though, are we creating them now? Maybe!

I don't have alien ocs but i'm gonna go balls deep and say i am an alien believer.

Now obviously i don't think they're like the little green guys with the UFOs but we have never ventured beyond the Milky Way, i can't imagine there aren't a few single celled organisms just doing their shit. Idk the idea that Earth is the only planet to host intelligent life sounds far fetched to me.

In terms of Aliens in Media...you guys ever watch Paul? Watching Paul when i was like 8 is a core memory for me. I remember the scene where the one guy got a hole shot into him freaking me out as a little man LMAO.

Oh def, aliens exist. The universe is far too big not to. I think if we do encounter another being from another planet, it's going to be artificial. Though, generational ships could exist, but that might not ever reach us. Who knows though! There might be something we'd call "teleporting" being invented somewhere in the universe right now.
