Remember MUGEN? 2024-10-17 22:04:03

Does anyone remember playing MUGEN back then like I did? I loved MUGEN as a kid and I still play it every now and then. In case you've been living under a rock, MUGEN is a freeware game that lets you customize it in many ways, as well as having thousands of different characters and stages to download and play. So if you ever wanted to see Underdog duke it out with Superman, or Homer Simpson fight against Peter Griffin, you can do it with MUGEN! I've done some fighters for MUGEN before (which are just half-ass spriteswaps of existing fighters, since they were made when I was pretty young), but nowadays I just make stages. So, do you remember MUGEN?

I found it fun to mess around with but it didn't have any real lasting appeal for me. Here's my character select screen:

I always thought "M.U.G.E.N." was like "Super Smash Bros." on an extreme cocktail of drugs—LSD, steroids, and some really powerful pot. It's that one game where your favorite goofy cartoon characters can battle a photorealistic, deep-voiced, middle-aged American man with a shotgun from a grim, war-torn world. Or, if you want, you can make a bunch of Ronald McDonald clones fight to the death. Yeah, it's that kind of game.

I loved Mugen. It was fun in an annoying way how it felt like character repository sites would pop up just as quickly as they disappear and it sometimes felt like I had a character that was otherwise just lost to the aether at times. I'd found this awesome Mugen character site that remade every Capcom arcade fighter and I was essentially just playing this massive MvC, Children of the Atom, etc fight fest, but now the website's probably long gone.

I remember seeing someone make a Megaman Powered Up thing for Mugen but I don't remember it ever getting finished.

Come to think of it, was Card Sagas Wars just a suped up Mugen mod?

Fuck you give me money!

I remember them, from back in 2006, having watching some videos on YouTube, most of them were made from Windows Movie Maker back then. I mostly watched the fights featuring Homer (someone made a series based on it), dealing with invincible characters (some DBZ characters come into mind), and other characters from different video games, cartoons, shows, and heck, even games like Duck Hunt. I used to play the game, (when I was learning about the files, and where to place them at). Over a year and a half, I somehow lost interest in it. But it's somewhere in my latest usb-stick.

There was a series called Everyone Hates Homer, in which Homer gets the crud beaten out of him by different characters.

Yeah, some of the icons make it look weird (the big Charlie Brown head and Curious George being in the middle) and they're pretty small, too. The Mugen I have is the International Mugen Tournament.

I had a brief MUGEN phase until I downloaded something I shouldn't have and got myself a nasty virus.

Aside from that, it was fun to create your own roster and possibly your own game. I remember there were files and stuff compatable with flash which made it possible to build your own unique characters from scratch. I also remember there were characters that were so stupidly op they would actually brick your computer XD

Fun times.

...When I was a kid, I used to watch some MUGEN battles, but didn't comprehend what was MUGEN. Years later when I saw some videos talk about it, I decided to check out and I found it amazing, not only decided to study how the engine works, but also checked out others people creation like Hyper Dragon Ball Z, Street Fighter One, Vargverse, etc. For me, MUGEN it's like a playground where not only you can have fun messing around, but also try making stuff like new character, stage or a full game. I do want to eventually do a full game on the engine, one day I will find some time for it. Anyway, since other users are uploading character select screen, here's mine:

I agree, MUGEN is fun to mess around with! I've made several Mugen characters years ago, but they aren't that good (they're just spriteswaps). I focus solely on stage making nowadays, so much in fact that I would make stages of the most arbitrary things such as one of Green Acres of all things.

I actually tried to get into it, but I could not figure out how to add in characters, so I gave up. Although recently, I have been playing it with a friend who thought me the process, so maybe I will get back into it and create my dream roster as much as possible.

Occasionally I watch Saltybet. Basically AIs fighting other AIs with mugen bots. I find all sorts of music from there, and I'll use it as background noise sometimes.

It was homemade, I'm guessing they repurposed a street fighter cabinet. They also had a smash bros melee cabinet!

I remember watching a lot of MUGEN videos in the early days of Youtube, and I was blown away by the whole crossover aspect of it all. Sure, there was always some that were poor in execution, and was often easy copyright bait because of an obsession of licensed music and sounds that came with them (TBF, they weren't the only ones, as early NG and YT had a lot of that floating around, but I digress.)

Over the years, my interest dwindled in MUGEN, if mostly because of "Seinfeld is unfunny syndrome" of it all. That said, I'll still check in now and again and see what's what, even if it's at a distance now.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

The biggest strength about MUGEN/Ikemen Go lies in it being a platform for all custom original fighting games made from the ground up with the intention of the whole project being a coherent vision.

The whole crossover approach, while surely a novelty, wears off really quick. And with characters made by different people with their own concepts on how a MUGEN character should play, very often based on vastly different source material (think of how different to one another Samurai Shodown and Mortal Kombat are), duct-taped into one MUGEN edition, you're never gonna have a balanced fighting game experience imho.

I haven't heard that name in years. I played a few times, made a bunch of incomprehensible piles of sprites I called characters, and it was fun. But just like Gmod, you can grow tired of having to be the one to pull the cart every single time. And to be honest, when I played Gmod for the first time, I never came back to MUGEN. Maybe I'll revisit it someday.
