The Takeover Tuesday Archive is now live!

Click the gear icon on the top right corner of that page to toggle the various filter options and ultimately explore other weeks once we've had a few.

There’s also now a summary box on the front page under Artist News, so you can see the weekly highlights and access the archive to browse more. These entries are ranked by the number of people who featured them, with positive emotes being the tiebreaker. I would have loved to see Lucky Boy there instead of my Luis Day song but more people reacted to the Luis Day song!

Also worth noting, Whoa, is that parappa!? got the same number of features and reacts as MY NAME IS LEGION so the tiebreaker was whichever one was featured first.

Here's a twist though: Our plan was to only count emotes made on Tuesday, so the rankings would get locked down. That wasn't implemented yet and the rankings have already been shifting based on new emote activity. It's tempting to leave this be, so that after Tuesday the community can still massage the results to better reflect their favorites. It would only impact items that are otherwise tied (featured by the same number of people). This would also help late entries catch up. Thoughts?

UPDATE - The front page Takeover Tuesday box will now update daily to showcase different categories. Today is Art so that might be confusing with today being the introduction but hopefully it will feel more natural over time.

Awwww, yay! That episode really deserves a lot more attention than it got.

@D-slick is a massively underrated artist - glad to see the guy get some love!

The top picks for the first ever Takeover feel a slight bit chaotic due to it being brand new for people, so I’m very curious to see how the top picks look as weeks go on!

Another kudos to the NG staff for this! I have also seen some cool stuff I wouldn’t have otherwise with this feature, already!

People didn't know the impact emotes would have, so this week should be interesting now that they do!

That could actually turn out super rad! What if the results lock at the start of the next Takeover?

Personally, people should still be allowed to set emotes for the entries. Since Takeover Tuesday falls on a Tuesday, it can be easy to miss that time frame on that day. People should still be able to interact with the entries, and I think those who don't have supporter yet should also be able to set emotes.

I noticed that just now, I don't think it should allow users to react after the fact, but I also thought it would be neat if there were a separate row for the aftermath reactions. Don't know how much of a pain something like that would be to implement vs. whatever benefits it could have (can't really think of any) but it's an idea I suppose.

That could be a good way to go if we want to have some finality, will keep that in mind!

In my opinion it should be locked down to Tuesday since the page is acting as an archive. It would also be difficult to reference some of the rankings and submissions if they could at any time be moved around based on new emotes (#2-4 and #5-9 overall for this Tuesday could swap around indefinitely). Alternatively, having emoting open until the following Takeover Tuesday may be a good option to give people a chance to view & react to the rankings to better reflect overall consensus week to week.

I think now that people will see emotes have a role to play in rankings we'll get more people reacting on Tuesdays too

EDIT: I took too long to think and see someone else had the same idea about locking emotes in too!

Overall, Takeover Tuesday seems like a noble idea, but it has its flaws or could do with some additional updates / features.

I think it should have the following:

1. users with more followers could have more influence over the picks
2. features / reacts made during the previous week could have less influence... to prevent the same movie from getting "top pick" status twice in a row.
3. (edit) Show at least 1 of each Portal submission in the Top Picks, even if it's not in the Top 5.
4. DO prevent self-promotion (owner/manager only). Should've been obvious
5. the option to undo / change my pick, in case I pick the wrong submission by mistake.
6. credit the author on each pick. Right now they are uncredited.
7. ping/notify the author if their work was featured (regular, daily, or Takeover feature)
8. show "Chronologically" by default instead of "Popularity"

That would be a pretty good idea - it'd help all four Portals get their fair share of the Takeover spotlight. It would likely mean each sub spends less time on the front page, but that's fine by me.

That's another good idea - seems kinda odd to me why it hasn't been implemented yet. Not everyone checks the front page, after all, so they could easily miss the news of ending up there.

If it becomes a problem, we might try it where the same person can't promote the same thing every week. So the same item could still potentially dominate but it would require unique people to prop it up vs the same people as the previous week, for example.

Had tried this but page was really feeling cluttered. Part of the appeal of Takeover Tuesday is the person doing the featuring gets to hog some spotlight.

Most people will only view whatever the default setting is for the archive, so it feels best to default to the format that rewards community engagement / most times featured vs whatever was posted first that day.

Cool stuff. Will the same art or movie be feature again after it was already featured in a previous Takeover?

That is how it works currently. If the results end up being too similar every week, we might throttle individual accounts from promoting the same thing every week, while still allowing entries to be at the top if other unique accounts feature them in a given week.

Awesome, worthy of a ping imo. Also I think reacting after tuesday as a tiebreaker will work fine, but definitely lock it up so that way once the next tuesday rolls around the previous tuesday is an untouchable archive and can't change

Now I’m figuring out what I should link for the next one! So much potential!

I think it depends on the implications.

Personally, the results being cemented while allowing additional reactions would give the most personality. You could see what was initially ranked, and then notice if an entry had gained more reactions after the fact. It'd be like the community saying, "But this one is amazing or funny or inappropriate though!"

edit: It might even encourage a bigger turnout on the day of, too.

The equivalency would be getting a Daily 1st or 2nd, and not losing the medal just because your rating dropped or an adjacent submission gained a higher score in the following days.

Im excited to see what is going to be suggested in the future, since majority of the process is the *amount* of supporters sponsoring a specific entry, and not the overall reactions.

Coordinating efforts for underrated submissions or big group projects will hopefully bring the community closer together. It's bound to bring up discussions every week amongst users as to what was sponsored the most and what for~

Will you still be promoting big collabs and events in the banner as well ?

i think a possible downside is people spamming negative emotes to push things down, while an anonymous up and down reaction would be more peaceful, i guess. I think leaving it open for the whole week is fun though.

I find no drawback to letting people keep reacting. If there are a lot of ties however, could it be too much of an undertaking if you intend to "vote" on every one? Perhaps that scenario is unlikely but it's something I thought about.

Reactions are not only positive however, and sometimes reactions are used ironically. Are you to interpret angry faice, as an example, as a plea not to feature that submission? It needs to be clear which ones are positive or negative. Also if emotes are used for voting they lose their value as means to express emotion.

What if there was a separate +/- rating? (Like comments used to have for a period.) (which could also be hidden to not influence other viewers.) Then emotes could still be used freely.

I think it would be nice if featured projects got a trophy that shows the date it was featured on, just like the frontpage trophies :)
