I hated this art style as a kid, and I still don't like it to this day >:P
the one where it is just neon colors everywhere without it being used in consideration. I'm all up for bright colors and all but when there is no control over it and it becomes wild and messy and bright just to be bright then I would probably not look at it.
and whatever the hell these are

I don't remember a damn thing about this but I thought the art style was cool. Like stop motion paper cutouts or something.
There's someone on YouTube that I follow who LOVES the series and either wanted a reboot or was trying to get her own show animated in the same style. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it nowadays though.

The show is actually hand drawn on paper too, they put in more effort to make the show look worse

Oh it's disturbing now, geeeeeeez...
It's not a cartoon but an art-style trope, a pet peeve of mine.
Basically a simple cute design character and an overly detailed biblically accurate celebrity in animated shows.
Take a look.

It's gonna have to be King Star King. Sorry, but that art style makes me scared to leave my house for fear that something resembling the characters and the art style could exist in real life.

Like what the hell is up with the tallish guy's ear? Or how the girl next to the tallish guy looks less like a normal young girl and more like a hairy gnome. Craig himself is the only character that looks okay but I'm bothered by his weird gamer dent. And don't get me started on that mutated parrot.
I haven't seen the complete show, only clips of it and it just seems generic and catters to the nerdy weird outcast kids(I was one though), but I hope it's good and the clips I watched were out of context. It's just these character design suck more than the show's lame ass food and recipes.
I watched a few episodes of that show when I was 16 years old and still watching Cartoon Network from time to time and it's honestly not that bad. It's pretty much just a harmless creative slice-of-life kind of show.
I hate the character designs because of that annoying calarts style.
I don't really get the whole "CalArt style" complaint because there's was an entire Japanese anime/manga style of simplicity and common traits that has been around way before even Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and even the Disney Channel were even a thing.
And I'm sure a lot of modern creators have taken significant influence from that style, including the examples shown above, which led to the "CalArt style" seen today. But either way, I think the whole "CalArt style" thing is just an easy, less thought-provoking way to critique a show without exploring the other important aspects like background designs, character animation, environmental animation, arcs, themes, stories, etc.
That's just how I see it.
Looking back, I just don't like round and soft art styles, such as the adult animated show style. Examples is Family Guy, The Simpsons, Brickleberry, Paradise PD, Farzare, and Hoops. Just to name a few
i'm going to be honest, brickleberry/paradise pd's art style is the visual equivalent of unseasoned baked beans and warm water.

I think that was beacuse it takes one week to make each episode in order to remain topical.
Correct me if I'm wrong, though
It was originally made from pieces of construction paper but was moved to being done digitally in season 5. After that the characters started looking too detailed as they didn't have the limitations of paper anymore. Personally I like the simpler style of the earlier seasons as it looks odd seeing detail in south park characters.
Everything CalArts styled. I get gag reflex from those.

sweet jesus
I was going to say CalArts, but that's low hanging fruit at this point. Thing is, it wasn't completely terrible (if still bland) when it first came out, but with so many copycats and low budget efforts, it's not a surprise why CalArts got shit on so much.
If I had to mention another, its the infamous FLCL Grunge/Shoegaze animation. FLCL was always a dumb series that cut corners to begin with, but with so much CGI covering up all the jank, it makes me honestly wonder who thought this was a good idea, aside from adult swim. (and specifically Jason Demarco)
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Ok, hear me out, fanboy and chum chum art style is actually pretty competent. Taking a look at the early design sheets, they're actually incredibly expressive and full of charm, unironically some of my favorite 2d illustrations out there.
As for the show's style itself? It's obviously not as good. It's debatably not even good, but credit where credit is due, they did a pretty good job at translating the HEAVILY STYLIZED 2d characters into cheap 3d. They may be a little bit grotesque, but they still got the style down pretty well. Remember, this is cheap television 3d animation, stylization at all is rare, and I think Fanboy and Chum Chum deserves more respect in this department. The characters are also animated pretty well in the show too, lots of fun squashing and stretching and overall good body language.
Fanboy's issues come mostly from the writing, but even then the writing isn't really bad, it's just kind of boring uneventful nonsense. The show doesn't really have a premise, it's just random well designed characters doing whatever.
Want to know what early AT looked like?
ABSOLUTE HORSESHIT! And the writing and humor of this pilot is somehow more painful than the aesthetics. It's not the worst artstyle, but it definitely belongs on this thread as a dishonorable mention.
Now, seeing these 2 shows in these early states, tell me which one you would pick up? Nickelodeon absolutely did not make a mistake. I actually cannot fathom any sane person picking up AT in that state. Nickelodeons rejection of AT was definitely crucial to it, y'know, improving. Even early AT on cartoon network was pretty loud, bright, and obnoxious.
While it may look like Nickelodeon made a mistake retrospectively, please don't hold this one against them, it was really the safer and smarter of the two choices. Instead, hold almost every other decision Nick made against them, because BOY does Nick make a lot of awful mistakes.
A few other people mentioned this, but the worst art style has to be Problem Solverz (or at least shows on a similar caliber, which isn't many).
Cry all you want about other shows looking ugly, unappealing, uncharming, or cheap, but Problem Solverz is actively PAINFUL to look at. This isn't hyperbole, it's the only art style that genuinely causes me and others eyestrain and headaches looking at. At least Family Guy or Mr. Pickle's art style don't cause literal physical discomfort.
At 10/15/23 01:08 AM, NIFYX wrote:Interesting question when put on this site. I sometimes wonder how folks put up with Frontpage slopimation.
There's a lot of conjecture about why ugliness is chosen for promotion. One would typically think studios are starved for talent, wherein the best work could be reproduced. It's like ugly is the lowest common denominator for the team of animators. Ugly is easy to remake. Maybe ugly is fast and easy, to cover for a better project's failures in scheduled releases.
What if these publishers want to starve the masses for the good shows? That's against the company's viewer-and-monetary interest, unless they're a captured institution by some other interest. Maybe there's an executive decision to make some shows like shit so others appear better. Content curation has been noted on youtube, for example, where most everyone agrees the popular stuff is obnoxious, yet it stays popular.
Maybe these shows are indicative that audiences don't know what they want, or that creators misinterpret what audiences want. What if the proliferation of ugly in shows like Problem Solverz is indicative of deliberate, closely measured quantities of what audiences are capable of tolerating? Maybe the studios want to know just how sloppy the quality can get before audiences leave? Adult Swim doesn't care much with their limited night-time viewership, and their quality is shit as demonstrated by a show like squidbillies. Maybe adults are more willing to tolerate ugliness for the expectation that the show is a comedy. Maybe these cartoons are looking to increase the audience's tolerances for shit, so producers can be more lazy yet still get the same viewership for their ad-twats. What if advertisements were more pretty than the shows?
I was under the impression that youtube's most popular vids were watched mostly by children. I imagine that that's the case for animated content as well. They aren't gonna critize how ugly or unappealing a show is in the same way older audiences would, and adult shows like Big Mouth still have a sizable viewer base (couldn't tell you why, the writing is not good and the style gross). I think a lot people just come home from work/school and watch whatever is on regardless of quality. Why put in any effort when you know you're bound to make money anyway? That's completely ignoring hate watchers.
Any show with this mouth. I hate it. It looks so disgusting and wrong when they open and close their mouths. I hate seeing the teeth go from regular horizontal stylization to this hideous vertical atrocity. It's even worse when the character is missing a tooth/teeth. I saw a clip from big city green where a character was missing some teeth and they changed position and size every time he opened and closed his mouth. It's what made me realize how much I hated it.
any calarts style, family guy, and problem solverz

The Problem Solverz, and I'm sorry for anyone who is nostalgic for that show.
Even 2010s kids aren't nostalgic for that
