2. Russian President Vladimir Putin warns that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia
3. He urges Ukrainian soldiers in eastern Ukraine to lay down weapons and return to their homes
4. Ukraine's foreign minister accuses Russia of starting a full-scale war, and urges the UN "to do everything possible" to stop it
5. US President Joe Biden vows that the world will hold Russia accountable, predicting major loss of life
6. The EU says Putin has brought war back to Europe and is preparing a "massive" package of sanctions
7. Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg says the bloc stands with Ukraine at this terrible time, and will do all it takes to defend all allies

• In a TV address at 05:55 Moscow time (02:55 GMT), Russia's Vladimir Putin announced a "military operation" in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region
• Putin said Russia was acting in self-defence. He urged Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their weapons. Any intervention by outside powers against Russia would get an "instant" response, he said
• Russia has hit Ukrainian infrastructure with missiles, Ukraine says. It also says it has shot down Russian aircraft - which Moscow denies
• Convoys of troops and tanks have entered Ukraine from all directions. One convoy has crossed from Belarus at a point to the north of the capital Kyiv. Another has entered from Crimea in the south, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014
• At least eight people are reported to have been killed

This invasion is clearly not just coming from Donbas, but from all areas Russia borders with Ukraine, including the territory they "claim" to be theirs, Crimea. This is not just a special operation, this is a full-scale invasion.

Kiev is the Russian spelling, Kyiv is the Ukrainian spelling

Appeasement will fail (Putin called the US an "empire of lies" and he's not wrong), sanctions will fail. The only option is the military, but nobody here desires war after experiencing one disaster after another, on top of having little personal stake in the conflict.

We should face it, we don't live in a unipolar world anymore. The speed of the Russian operations here has been pretty astonishing, and it is doubtful a US military operation would actually succeed, assuming we had the will to pursue that, and we don't. We should be asking what sunk us into the ground so hard and fast that the country we recently were inviting to join NATO is getting taken over by the biggest threat to itself and NATO is nowhere to be found. We are so ignorant and prideful we don't even listen to the legitimate security concerns Russia had that led to this. And when is the last time one of our US trained/funded armies was any...good?

Biden, to his credit, was pretty clear that this was coming and what the US response would be and I appreciate the honesty.

Just wanted to add fuck Belarus. It is being reported that they lent their forces to Russians for this invasion and I hope they also feel the weight of sanctions for their actions against the people of Ukraine.

As a side note, it will be interesting to see how much of what is being reported is wrong with how quick the situation is evolving.

Ukraine isn't part of NATO... they can't invoke article 5. If anyone intervenes, then Russia is going to lose it even more and possibly use nuclear means or very strong cyber attacks like possibly taking out power stations.

We also are not putting boots on the ground for Ukraine. That would be insane.

Yeah, Ukraine really tried hard to join NATO in order to make it so that they are protected under Article 5 but it's too late. Also, i think Joe Biden has said that any american in Ukraine has to evacuate immediately before they're caught in the crossfire.
