Things are pretty free-form here but if you want to try something specific, we have a bunch of games in the 2015 range that had "slightly larger" thumbnails in the system, but not large enough for the current format. When switched to the larger format, these games had their thumbnails processed to fit the new site but they don't look ideal.
Here's an example from January 2015, using our custom date range sort:

Notice how Shop Empire 3, Strikeforce Kitty 2 and Tangerine Tycoon have awkward thumbnails. If you have NG Player (or if the games are running via Ruffle) you could try making new thumbnails for those.
Alternatively, most really old content already runs in Ruffle and a lot of it has missing or small thumbnails, if you'd want to try those! Here's January 2005 for an example:

The tank logo means there is no thumbnail on file and in the case of thumbnails that are slightly taller, these are the old 140x90 thumbnails being scaled up in-page - these could also get replaced with proper hi-res thumbnails and it would correct the aspect ratio.
