I certainly realize that AI is taking over this site, but it's AI chillin' on the home page again. WHY? This kind of audio has been found repeatedly. Why was I, as a regular user of this site, able to determine it was AI by even listening to it on my phone? Who is in charge of posting new Frontpaged songs? Tell them not to let this happen again!

Many musicians whose music goes unnoticed try to do something better, but they don't get any support, and here we have some Suno AI who is in the public eye BEFORE NOW! This is a site for creativity, which should be creativity, not soulless generation of a complete song in 1-2 minutes through Suno! Since when did this site lose the slogan "Everything, by Everyone"?

@TomFulp I implore you to take some action at least. If you are the one putting new songs on Frontpaged, then I ask you to check the full songwriter account of the song you want to put on your front page. Otherwise, music from real people will simply be diminished on that front page if authors of HUMAN music see this kind of AI crap on the homepage.

He claims that the three songs that were not deleted belong to his band. I know G2961 already mentioned it, but this AI song was frontpaged!!! There’s so much noise and weird things that happen as notes bleed into each other. “Crusty high notes” is how I usually describe generations like this. Bitrate is horrible too when analyzed in a spectrogram. (Bitrate positively correlates with max frequency, so a low max frequency indicates a low bitrate, even if the metadata says otherwise.) Near certain this was made with Suno AI.

I have some things to say about AI and maybe ways to safeguard against it, both for users and Newgrounds as a creative site. I'll post that in a bit.

Something needs to be done about the vast amounts of AI music in the audio portal, and the volume that gets uploaded each day.

Note: I meant to send this as a PM months ago, but I might as well just say what needs to be said here instead, and hopefully get input from others while I’m at it.

Over the past few moths, AI has been invading the audio portal. I have reported at least 500 AI generated songs myself, posted both by new accounts and by long established users. And it’s not like any of these AI songs are groundbreaking or excellent; they usually sound like garbage, with awful bitrates, bad mixing, and/or strange artifacts. While I see plenty of songs that aren’t very good on the undiscovered section of the audio portal, they at least have some effort and the friendly glint of creativity in the user’s eye. Songs made by entirely by Suno, Udio, and other AI creation software lack any sort of creativity or effort, and are built on the data scraped from genuine artists. It is the unholy amalgamation of everything by everyone.

But you probably already knew that. That’s not what this message is for. I am instead suggesting a broad solution that could help minimize the addition of more AI garbage being shoveled onto the portal. That solution is education.

The best way to safeguard against AI is education. Seriously, that’s most of the solution. The more people know about AI and what it sounds like, the less likely they are to pass by it and think nothing of it, or worse, scout it or recommend it for a frontpage. The people that frontpaged AI songs clearly don’t know how to detect it. Also, I've see large Newgrounds creators comment on, talking about how “amazing this random GD player’s songs are for a first submission”. Generative AI is a new technology and many people don’t realize how convincing it’s become, small users, large creators, and moderators alike.

Well, how do we educate people? We need some sort of PSA (public service announcement) made by (or with) people who know how to discover and identify AI generated music, such as people in this thread. This PSA at the very least should be a dedicated announcement to everyone, but it could also be presented in the form of a movie or a game (or a couple of these options together). The PSA would mostly be for telling people to remember that AI is rampant and to be on the lookout for it, but also to tell people how to recognize it. At one point, I couldn’t tell the difference, but with time and experience I learned. The people who need to know this information the most are moderators and scouted users, as they can have the most impact. However, everyone should be at least somewhat knowledgeable on AI, which is why I think an announcement to everyone is the best idea.

Other than the PSA, there’s a couple other ideas I’ll mention. It might be helpful to make it more obvious in the submission page that AI music is not allowed, as you currently have to scroll down to see it. Maybe a required checkbox would help, saying something along the lines of, “I did not use an AI tool (such as Suno or Udio) to generate this submission, and understand the potential consequences if I do.” It would at least filter out a couple users who “didn’t know” and potentially scare off some of the run-of-the-mill GD AI uploaders.

ADR3-N suggested that a task force be set up for this issue, and I think it’s an excellent idea. Perhaps this task force could help create a PSA, generally educate people, and/or write guides on how to detect AI music. That’s what my general idea of it is. @ADR3-N, if you had a different idea for a task force, or if what I’m suggesting isn’t really what you were thinking of, I would love to hear it.

It could also help to have some bigger faces helping the issue, similar to how James Lee recently took a stab at Adobe, although that might not be necessary if AI is gotten under control on the site and people are educated.

Another idea is developing some sort of system to limit AI tracks being uploaded in the first place, through software. However, I’m not sure how this could be done, as at the moment there is no reliable way for software to determine if music is AI generated, at least not that I’m aware of. Alternatively, some songs could be automatically flagged if they have something like “Udio v1” as one of the contributing artists in the metadata. I understand that software development takes time and money, but I just thought it wise to put the idea out there anyway.

All in all, I am not a musical artist, but I can imagine how it must feel to have your genuine work get pushed aside for some random guys with access to a Suno accounts. It’s not right and something needs to be done.

Also, I just fully read this, and I somewhat disagree. @G2961 posts a lot of AI songs in here, usually more than me. Hundreds of them. If anything, I am cruising on his lists that he puts in here. While I do listen to each of the songs he posts and analyze them myself (I'm very meticulous when it comes to flagging, and I prefer more solid evidence like bitrate), it still is easier than digging through the undiscovered section of the audio portal (although I do this often too). While I can't say anything about there being nothing in a flag report, I would never call G2961 lazy, or assert that he's "cruising for free points" off my reports.

Taking 2 secs to write "AI" in the flag box won't hurt

Also, I have Linguix Turbo for things like this that I have to write all the time. You can make keyboard shortcuts with it and insert them easily by typing // and then the name of your shortcut.

I looked this up, definitely going to be using this. Beats the old ctrl c, ctrl v, for commonalities in most Suno generations.

I've personally always done my flags manually - this seems useful.

All three of them have made good and justified reports in the past.

The issue was not putting in effort to justify the flag, probably to make it down the line of already posted items. In this case it was off of your post, but YOU actually forgot to flag parts of your post batch and the other 3 left blank comments possibly assuming you had already put in commentary.

Not all the mods are active on the forums, some may just use the flag reports. Sometimes the reports are blank and have no indication on what the flag purpose was, some are following posts (and sometimes wrongly, people have lost points for blindly flagging off these threads without doing due dilligence), and just this morning I saw a flag where the user was thanking the (scouted, popular) music artist for making nice music.

Having a comment with info shows that the flag was made in good faith, and the mod can use judgement if there needs to be action taken on the item or if the flag was wrong may be a bit lenient in the whistle point loss.

Taking a moment to put a minimal justification/source in the flag demonstrates that the flagger has done a little quality control and isn't just popping in to go down the list of reports. If someone is in that much of a rush, adding a second blank report to an already reported item doesn't really add value asides from getting whistle points out of it. I'd rather someone file five good quality reports a day instead of 15 rushed or poorly researched.
