A general question: are remixes of well-known tracks allowed and if yes then how much "remixed" should they be to be legal - or otherwise reported?

Tracks should be in the public domain, creative commons, or otherwise not copyrighted. For remixes of music from NCS, MonsterCat, etc, there should be clear permission from the artist and label.
If it's something you might hear on a top 40 (Marshmello, etc) then chances are good it can't be legally submitted.
If in doubt, toss a flag, and we'll sort it out on our end. There are a few artists who are signed in the audio portal, as well as a few labels (like TheFatRat's Arcadium label). We get a flag on Arcadium at least weekly by people who mean well.

Bupkis. The fair use law of US code applies to non profit educational material. But they would still have to convince a judge and the prosecuting lawyer of that.

I encountered an example when a remix can be legal: if it was made for official contest, like this one:
Obviously the link is currently not working since changes have been made on Prodigy's official website after Keith Flint's death.
By the way, a set of new stolen materials I found:
I found an interesting article about the remixes in the context of copyright.
So, summarizing: if you make a remix you need to be allowed to do this by the original author, especially if there is a chance that the remix will be monetized/used in other works.
Oh, and a new set of rules-breaking submissions:
This guy seems to have borrowed some vocals from here.

I have a feeling this guy didn't get permission from Muse to make this cover.

This guy strikes again with the Muse covers
Covers are ok. Remixes are sketchy. Flat-out uploads are not allowed.
Someone uploads something that's not theirs, we'll remove and ban. Remixes are grey, and require a bit more reviewing to see how much original content is there, and then we act accordingly.
Covers are just a recording of someone singing someone else's song, and that's fine. Everybody sings someone else's songs sometime. If it ever comes to the day when you're walking down the street, singing something, and lawyers jump out and want you to pay royalties for singing that song, then we're all doomed.
These are both just a guy singing a song. ... and, doing a decent job of it.

I see! Thanks for the clarification. Obviously, everyone sings someone else's songs sometimes, but I didn't know if it was a problem for that content to be on NG or not. Thanks again.

Like this if you want Exedor to sing a cover of “It’s Raining Men”
