To be fair, the Japanese don't necessarily count their haiku by the syllable, but by a somewhat similar linguistic element. As such, the English version of the haiku is sometimes misaligned. I'd look into this more to back up what I'm saying, but I'm too lazy to do so, and it doesn't really matter anyway because the English haiku is indeed 5-7-5.
