I don't see these problems either. I mean, yeah, many bands turned to shit over the years, but there is still a good deal of promising new/newish stuff out there.
The actual problem, like batman mentioned, is the lack of exposure for good metal and hardrock bands on the radio/TV. Emo/Screamo completely dominate, which is too bad, since I'd even prefer Country over that shit.

Good, new bands might spawn less and less, true. But the old good ones haven't gone anywhere. Shit even Dio's still around. Metal doesn't got any major airplay because it might be a super mainstream genre, but not directed to the actual mainstream. Now the quality of the bands (excluding rare exceptions) might've gone down, and the media is promoting gay ass bands, metal fans will always be mainly mainstreaming idiots. This ranges from Slipknot maggots to die hard old school thrash metal bikers with the denim vests and a bazillion band patches.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still a big fan of the music (I'm selective but I like quite a bit), but being super elitist about it just makes you as lame as them. This wasn't directed at you btw, it's more of a general rant.
Conclusion, complaining that good metal doesn't get enough attention is very, very, very untrue. And even if they got more attention, it'd be pointless.

I love CC. They've been one of my favourite bands since i started listening to metal. I think their success is well earned (especially when listening to albums like "Bloodthrist" and "Vile").

Perhaps I don't really have the right to say much, because I always had a decent school with a fair amount of people who like metal. The only problem I ever encountered there were some 'metal'kids with too much enthousiasm. Like starting to mosh when the prodigy is being played...
