Power

Power metal is dominiated by light, major chords and distinct melody and harmony to create a sortof, 'happy' metal. Bands worth checking out from this genre: Blind Gaurdian, DragonForce, and it's originator, Helloween.

Thrash

Thrash metal is one of the biggest genres of metal. It's characterised by distorted guitar, fast tempo and pentonic/minor chord structures. Aggressive and powerful, this is a must. Bands worth checking out from this genre: Slayer, The Haunted, Megadeth.

Death

The most over the top, brtual and insane genres ever, Death metal is instantly recognised by death grunts or, 'Cookie Monster' vocals. Faster than Thrash and downtuned, this genre is an aquired taste, but rewards are satisfying. Band worth checking out: Deicide, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Cryptopsy, and it's originator, Death.

Black

Even more of an aquired taste than Death metal, Black metal focuses on brutal riffs, ambience, and high pitched rasps and shrieks. Bands worth listening to: Gorgoroth, Immortal, Emporor, Mayhem, Burzum.

Please shut up. Power Metal isn't happy in most cases. Its just epic and inspiring. Only with DragonForce is it cheesily happy.

Thrash is by no means slower than Death. At the opposite, there is no such thing as "slow thrash" but there is lots of slow Death Metal (Obituary, for example) out there. The definition of Thrash riffage does not apply to slow riffs. Mid-paced it about the minimum.

Here you go with your opinions. Death metal isn't over the top at all IMO, and insane is not a dictionarial adjective. Try keeping your opinions out of it. And Possessed were death metal before Death existed, so Death didn't originate it.

My girlfriend isn't a metalhead "per se", but she does like some metal, mostly some power/thrash stuff. She mostly listens to indie rock, but I can tolerate some of that stuff.

But power/thrash I mean Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Overkill, Death Angel, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, and Angels & Demons

Iunno about you guys, or why I tend to be so overally sexist, but usually when a girl says she is a metalhead, I never believe her. I mean, i'll give her the fact she knows a few bands, but I never believe she can prove she is like..a TRUE metalhead, or could even name me albums off a band she claims she likes if we're talking about it in a group.
