I know, Bad Brains are hardcore, Big Black are hardcore, Fugazi are hardcore, and nu metal and metalcore don't particularly sound like them at all in my opinion.

Yeah. Not to mention the fact that they would sound better if they were influenced by those bands. But who am I kidding? That would imply that they've listened to them, which would further imply that they have a knowledge of music past Metallica, 50 Cent, My Chemical Romance, Rise Against, and Paramore. Which, if they did, they wouldn't be in a nu-metal or metalcore then.

big black are noise rock and fugazi are post-hardcore. black flag and dead kennedys are hardcore, as are bands like minor threat, naked raygun, and the circle jerks. hardcore is a huge genre unto itself, it's crazy. there are tons of different scenes.

I was about to say something along these lines after reading some of this stuff. Then again, hardcore has become such a blanket term now that a lot of people don't even think of nyhc and stuff like that when they use it. Stormtroopers of Death, MOD, and DRI are influenced by hardcore, not nu-metal. That's more just cookie-cutter bullshit trying to sound abrasive.

Hey...not really trying to join, cause i'm pretty sure i'm not welcome here. Last time i posted, i got completely ignored.
I was just wondering if you guys could maybe recommend some bands. I'm not really into...norwegian death satanic black metal, but i do like Opeth, if that helps with the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Also: I do like metalcore(bands like August Burns Red), BUT i want to go heavier...
Yes, i know everyone here hates metalcore.

If you like Opeth, you'll probably like Katatonia.

Regardless of if I join this club or not my favorite genre will still be RnB and my taste Metal will still be by and large related to that if only by the most imperceptible connections.
The requirements are that you list ten bands, and one of us will tell you if you have what it takes to join. From what you listed, we have decided that you have enough interests in Metal to join. So if you are interrested, no matter what you favorite musical genre is, you are welcome in the Metal Hell.
I am very interested though in what was recommended to me, and I already do enjoy Dio and Wintersun from what was mentioned. So I look forward to experiencing new sounds because that's what this is all about after all, at least, for me it is.
I recommended these artists to you because Wintersun's frontman was previously the vocalist of Ensiferum for the release of their first record, the self-titled album. In Wintersun, he does pretty much everything except for the drums. I have to say the first album by Ensiferum was my favorite, partly influenced by his awesome vocals. Their next vocalist is also guitarist/vocalist in the band Norther, so this is also why I suggested you check them out.
Dio, has been the vocalist for Black Sabbath for a while, and since you listed them, I thought you could like his work with his own band.

I'm quite impressed by your open-mind. Most often, people who are a lot into RnB are not as open to Metal or other more underground and less commercial music. Which is not an insult by the way, I enjoy a lot of the music you listen to.
I still suggest that you don't take recommandations from last.fm when it comes to Metal. At least, not the "Metal" tag. Good through your stuff, I think some genres that would help you open yourself to different metal genres would be Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Power Metal. I will also throw some Progressive Metal in there. I suggest you listen to some Dream Theater, this is one of the most awesome bands to ever exist. No shit :P

With judgemental opinions like these, I'm pretty sure you won't fit in here. But if you are willing to drop all this bullshit and actually listen to the 99,9% of the Metal scene that isn't norwegian and/or death and/or satanic and/or black metal, you could actually find some music you could like in the genre.
If you like Opeth, I suggest you listen to The Morningside, Katatonia and Agalloch.
Yes, i know everyone here hates metalcore.
Not everyone. The point is that metalcore is not really metal, so that's why we say no to metalcore, not cause we hate it.

That just makes me wonder why I haven't even checked out a lot of Norther. I don't even have any of their albums. However, my sister has asked for one of their albums for Christmas so if she gets it, I'll finally listen to them.

I can't be arsed quoting people on, cause its fairly old news now.
But tere was all this 'blah blah new trend blah blah popular bands blahblah' talk. I can't speak from experience but I can totally imagine Metal going through that 40 years ago or whatever. Bill will have to clarifiy this but I bet Metal was looked down on by the fans of established genres. I imagine Punk did too. And Rock, and all these genres we're accustomed too now.
As for following trends, how many of you have had, have or wanted long hair? Maybe a leather jacket and the desire to fuck a dead goat and smear its blood on your chest or something?
Total speculation mind, I've done no research into this but I imagine I'm fairly right.

There is a difference between sharing some similarities in the way you dress or think and being a total fanboy. Yes, Metal is a trend, but not the same kind of trend we are talking about.
Having long hair or wearing a leather jacket, is just a symbol, something you do because you want to be part of a community. You share something with other people.
Bands like Paramore are not bringing anything new to the table, they are the perfect example of artist who got succesful only because of the trend they are following.
I can see fans of Paramore turning their back on them in a few years because the band will just fade away with the trend, but I don't think I will stop listenning to Sunn O))) if they stop being popular. Oh wait, they never were popular... See that's the big difference. I feel like a metalhead, I'm part of a community, not because it's hype and cool to be a metalhead, but because I like it. I have no doubt that scene kids or Paramore fans really like what they do. I doubt that they would have ever listenned to them if they never had any plays on the radio, though.

I wanted long hair, because of metal, but I don't any more, and even if I did want it like before I can't grow it due to my curly as fuck jewfro hair. Damnit.

I got long hair after I started listenning to metal. In fact, I started listenning to metal when I decided I didn't wanted to be a sheep like the other kids. Having long hair pretty much just followed this first rebellion I had against trends, back when I was a teenager.

i wanted long hair all the way back in 4th or 5th grade, finally grew it out in 7th grade and have kept it long since. but who else has beards? i've been doing the beard thing for a year.

I have a beard. Not a black metal beard. I keep it pretty clean, and it looks damn fucking good. Btw, never got longer hair than what I have now.

I've always had long hair. My hair is thick as fuck so when it's short it doesn't behave well and never did what I wanted it to. Having my hair longer just makes it part down the center and that's all I could really ask for.
As for beards, I've had a beard for as long as I can remember. I've just been shaving the sides and keeping it long and braiding it. Because of my ancestry my facial hair changes color when it's long so the longer it gets the redder it gets so when it's braided it has all these different colors from black to red weaving through it. I need to trim it up but it's about six or seven inches long right now.

Funny enough, the more I got into metal, I think the shorter my hair got for many years. Shaving was involved in a lot of those years, sometimes completely, a lot of it was undercuts.
Now I'm a proper girl. I like to play it deceptively. Ninja in my manliness when no expects it.
But the goat fucking has been a steady passion. Totally long before metal and everything.

I used to have short hair, but as I started high school and started listening to metal through a friend of mine (starting with early A7x, Dragonforce, Trivium, Slayer, early Slipknot etc.) I grew my hair a lot more, but never went past long emo fringe with a parting, it looked pretty bad haha, I look about 13 on my student ID from last year :P Wasn't until this year that I finally look different to my high school self haha. (I'm nearly 18 :p) I've always kinda wanted the long middle-parted metalhead hair though, maybe someday :)
As for beardyness, I'm rockin a pre-beard as we speak, but I'm working on it :P

As I already told you, it's not a Metal beard. It's pretty short. Here's a picture anyway.
