Insomnium! With out a doubt, hands down, the best! I shall start by suggesting that the term brutal be removed from Insomnium. I think the more correct term to describe their atmospheric tendencies would be "woeful". The word brutal, IMO is just offensive, especially when applied to metal: it's a scene kid term so save yourself and drop it from your vocabulary unless the metal it's describing sucks so bad it is only fit for some dumb scene kid. It strips away any dignity and sophistication that may be present in a given masterpiece (like those of Insomnium).
Now that this is out of the way, I should mention that if you like Across the Dark from insomnium, then it would appear that you like a more progressive sound. It's the least "brutal" of all there music. At the same time, it is also NOT the most sophisticated (I was somewhat disappointed, but it grew on me). This being said, and considering what you claim to enjoy in metal, I think you, like myself, would love even more, the third album "Above the weeping world". This album takes the blend of love, sorrow, pain, melody, and sophistication to a level I have never heard in any metal before it, and still to this day have yet to find an equivalent. It truly encompasses the very spirit of Insomnium in a way that can't be missed. I strongly suggest this album to any one who loves melody and "brutality >.>". (I am only still using this word because it's what most people are used to using)
Now, for your benefit, I will also elaborate on their other albums, "In the Halls of Awaiting", and "Since the Day It All Came Down". These both maintain the description of Insomnium I have already given you, however you will notice that they become increasingly progressive throughout their discography line up. this means that in the earlier albums you will hear pure melodic death metal more then in their later albums. the third album is the best blend of MDM, progression and sophistocation IMO. The last album has to much progression (which I can get used to because its not too bad) and not enough sophistocation. however the roots of MDM are still prodominatly the focus of their music.
All of that being said. I recomend them all! HAHA
Also I hope I haven't offended anyone. I can get pretty righteous about music, especially Insomnium! So don't take it personally. If you disagree with what I have said, then just give me your side. I will listen, carefully consider, and respond peacefully.
For the record that post was aimed at theunwisepoet about half way up from here.

Insomnium is far by the greatest melodic death metal band out there. They are number 3 in my favorite metal bands of all time. They just have the most energy, emotion, and awesomeness. No other melodic metal band comes close to them.

Honestly, I don't like their new album as much, but only because they've done much better. It's still great as usual, even though I'm not a huge fan of progressive.

I completely agree. The oldest albums I think were the best, Since the Day It All Came Down was easily the greatest, and In the Halls of Awaiting was a great one too. I liked Above the Weeping World too, but again they seem to be getting more and more progressive as they go on. The greatness of them in the oldest albums were overwhelming.
All of that being said. I recomend them all! HAHA
I recommend Insomnium to ANYONE, just because they're just that awesome.
I happened to be listening to Insomnium while coming across this post, and I needed to respond to anybody that sees the amazingness in them while they are underrated as hell.
HAHA YES!!!
What are the other two? I have yet to find anyone I can compare to their greatness. I love other metal, but no one with that Insomnium sort of feel you know? So I must know , in the hopes they come close.

You should try:
Dark Tranquility
Kataklysm
Arch Enemy
Frozen Eternity
Ebony Tears
Amon Amarth
At The Gates
The Absence
Wintersun
All of these are amazing bands, but Insomnium is better IMO :)

How about this.
I hope everybody has a terrible, violent christmas, such that your parents die in their sleep and you accidentally leave the fireplace on for Santa.
By the way, I can rearrange, the letters in "Santa" to make "Satan". Joy.

Someone needs to write a Municipal Waste-style thrash song about leaving the fireplace on when Santa comes down, which leads to the burning down of the neighborhood.

I'm not sure what we're talking about anymore.
You're forgeting that no one ever takes the internet seriously unless they're doing homework or there's a virus.
All I know is that it went way off subject. Oh, well. Merry Christmas.

You too :)
Bring on new years, beer, girls and metal, fuck yes.
I got one metal album for Christmas and that's Manowar's Gods of War. I actually wasn't expecting this at all since if there was any CD my sister would get for me, it'd be Opeth but hey, I'm still happy. I'll be sure to order some metal albums from the internet today or tomorrow as I've been itching to get back to getting more music.
YAY! I received guitar pedals! I am feeling so happy... now I can compose music with all the details and effects I want! Shit I've never felt so happy like today... I was just not waiting for this... YAWP!

Merry Christmas, I got an iTunes giftcard and bought the Kataklysm album, Prevail, and an Amon Amarth song. I also got an Iron Maiden t-shirt and a Metallica t-shirt. And Guitar Hero 5 and Smash Hits, those will keep me occupied on break.

Well I've heard the album "Across the Dark" and "Above the weeping World" but musically I must admit I preferred "Across the Dark", I don't have arguments why, but I preferred that album.

Remember a few pages back when I said Oblivion was the most metal game on the 360. I lied. FUCKING BRUTAL LEGEND MAN, RADDEST GAME EVER.

As much as Brutal Legend is a game dedicated to heavy metal, I think Doom is the most metal game of all. Also, seeing as I'm wanting more Slough Feg and lost some confidence with third-party sellers from last time, I decided to buy Twilight of the Idols, Avatism, Hardworlder AND Ape Uprising from the official site. I may be going overboard but damn I really want more Slough Feg. Plus, the prices were most reasonable there.
Doom is BY FAR the most metal game ever made.
Doom 2 to be precise.
On nightmare mode.
Fuck yeah!
I got a pink snuggie. Hahahahahaha
Hi guys and girls, it's been too long.
Anyways, long story short and I've now acquired copies of Powerslave and Piece of Mind to go to my growing metal collection.
That now means 9 Albums in the collection actually owned and 2 copies of borrowed albums from friends and family:
Dance of Death - Borrowed
Edward the Great (Best of) - Borrowed
Fear of the Dark
Iron Maiden
Killers
No Prayer for the Dying
The Number of the Beast
Piece of Mind
Powerslave
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Somewhere in Time
At some point, I'll have a big enough collection to get the whole picture of Eddie across the spines of the cases.
Merry Xmas, or whatever depraved festival or anti-celebration that you people will be indulging in over the next few days.
Merry Christmas. so far Ive gotten some band shirts, hats, hoodies, and drummer sticks(sigs) so ya my Christmas is going good.
