Oddly enough, I've never given Dimmu Borgir a real listen to. I'm listening to Mourning Palace now and it's not as bad as the haters make it out to be. I never understood why they're hated by many but maybe someone here can explain the negative thoughts.

Because that was the true black metal sound.

Cause they are ugly...
But seriously... I think that Symphonic Black Metal is the Melodeath of black metal...
it's dissed and hated because it's more commercial and a lot of musicians of this scene are considered to be posers...
So when we talk about CoF or Dimmu, it's even worst cause they are like "THE MOST COMMERCIAL METAL OUT THERE"

Sorry just a little bit... but it's because I am more in that wave, but if you want to hate me, do it...

I find it unusual that anybody could ask for more -core in their music. I'd be cheering if Dissection had no -core whatsoever. Nonetheless, they're still a good band.

So that's why what I was listening to didn't sound so bad.

Is that so? If I looked further into black metal, I wouldn't mind the symphonic elements.

That's typical hate in the metal community for a lot of bands.

I want to listen to moar Viking Metal than Amon Amarth, give me some bands to listen to!

Went to Heathenfest yesterday, it was pretty kickass!
Going to see Vader, Decrepit Birth, Warbringer, The Amentia, Augury, Swashbuckle and S.W.W.A.A.T.S tomorrow!
Vader - Xeper

You do realize though, that Amon Amarth isn't gonna be like most of the other bands on that list, right? Most of the bands on that list are folk metal.

I dunno if I already explained this before... but anyway...
I think that Death Metal and Melodic Death Metal are different genres of metal and therefore melodeath shouldn't be named that way and shouldn't be classified as a sub-genre of Death Metal. I think that even if they share similarities they are two different genres of metal. I think it's the exact same thing for Black Metal and Symphonic Black Metal.
So yeah... most of the time they are not considered as "real metal bands" by the underground metal fans.
When I discuss musical tastes with people and that they only list Symphonic Black and Melodic Death bands... I just can't take them seriously when they talk about "THE metal". Basically I just see them as noobish metalheads. Call me an elitist if you want :P but that is just my opinion. So maybe SBM and MDM are dissed metal genres because they are the most commercial metal genres out there and that people who listen to them are sometimes seen by other metalheads as "pop metal fans"
Call me an elitist... but I hate to ear MDM kids talking about shit they don't know. Cause most of the time they assume that their tastes are "so fucking underground and that they are the only people who know these bands". So from this point they start trying to speak in the name of metal and try to teach their friends and family members what metal truly is by making them listen to their Cradle Of Filth and In Flames cd collection.
it's dissed and hated because it's more commercial and a lot of musicians of this scene are considered to be posers...That's typical hate in the metal community for a lot of bands.
Right. But if you are looking for posers... the SBM scene is where you'll find the largest amount of them. And that is as true for the fans as for the actual musicians of the band.
"DAAAAH !! Power chord."
I quite enjoy symphonic black metal and melodic death metal. I consider them sub-sub-genres (sub-genres of sub-genres) and they served as a sort of gateway drug to heavier stuff that I enjoy now. This is one thing that is starting to annoy me about this club: the constant bashing of sub-genres simply because you do not like it. Feel free to bash other things that aren't metal, but this club should accept ALL types of metal. There are countless number of sub-genres of metal, and they are all very diverse. If you wish to talk about what you consider TRUE METAL, rename the club into Thrash and Death and Black Metal Crew (No sub-genres). But it is simply called Metal Hell, which seems to indicate all genres of metal. Excuse me if this gets me exiled, but the ceaseless bashing is starting to get to me.

I enjoy Symphonic Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal and was bashed on countless times by Ponos cause he believed that it was all I was listenning to. And I'm starting to get why he reacted this way. It's annoying when "melodeath only" fans talk about "THE metal" but I do consider Melodeath to be as metal as metal can get.
I hope you get the point I'm trying to make...
I love melodic death metal, but I think that it's one of the easiest metal genre to listen to. There is catchy clean vocals, catchy clean guitar melodies and stuff like this. It's not bad. But can you consider that a "melodeath only" fan really knows a lot about metal if he can't stand death metal?

I'll give you this point as several times I felt melodic death metal was out of place to the rest of death metal.
So maybe SBM and MDM are dissed metal genres because they are the most commercial metal genres out there
This is the most common reason as to why people are hating Dimmu Borgir. Commercial or not, I'll look into more of their stuff and decide on my own opinions. I already know not to get their latest album. The two songs I heard were subpar.
Right. But if you are looking for posers... the SBM scene is where you'll find the largest amount of them. And that is as true for the fans as for the actual musicians of the band.
Say, aren't there symphonic elements in some of Emperor's stuff?

One thing I will say about the band, though. They look fucking ridiculous!
In my opinion the most real satanic Black Metal band in the world is Marduk.

It wasn't just directed at you, but I do see where you are coming from. I agree that when people only like one type of metal and then claim they are "hardcore" but the way you wrote your post seemed to show that you had a disdain for melodeath and symphonic black metal. The only thing that annoys me more than a person who is a total poser is someone who bashes genres and/or bands for no apparent reason. I get enough of that in school from uneducated idiots who think all metal is death metal and black metal, and that I instantly must be suicidal or wrist-slitting.
