Death, Deicide, Dimmu Borgir.

I wouldn't consider Death blackened in the least bit (but he should check them out anyways for being excellent)

Cool, I'll check out Death, Dimmu Borgir, Dissection, and Decide. I'll also see how Ahab is, they sound interesting.

Seriously, they sound amazing. I don't know why I haven't heard of them, but I have something to listen to now for the next week or so.
Duff and I had a discussion after I mentioned them a while ago, they are one of my all time favourite bands at the moment.

Make sure you get the album Altered Genesis, it's by far their best :)

I see you use a part of the cover os this album as your avatar on last.fm :)

Indeed, Altered Genesis is just great. Everything about them is great. Their guitar riffs are the definition of Technical Death Metal. And what can we say about Erlend Caspersen? One of my favorites bassists along with Alex Webster and that brutal dude from Brain Drill :P

Altered Genesis is their best album. But I would also recommand their newest album; Souls Of Damnation. Monument Of Death is also pretty good and even if it's not a great album. I would recommand that you listen to Come Death for the bass line.

You mean Jeff Hughell.

Yes. The guy who isn't in the band anymore...
I hope their new bassist will do the job....

Well Dopethrone is longer than Dopesmoker, its still a continuous listen.
I think the monotony is the problem with Dopesmoker... or maybe the fact I don't have any weed to smoke, as Bill says.

If you're going to get into Death, start out with Leprosy, and then Scream Bloody Gore. That's the album I started with, it's probably my favorite. It has the old school death metal sound going at full throttle. For Deicide, The Stench of Redemption is a good choice because it's more modern, the guitar players are insane, the vocalist does a brutal job, and it's not as boring as their other stuff in my opinion.

Response to Metal Hell 2009-10-18 19:23:21

Came across a spanish black metal band from the 90's called Atman and they aren't half bad. But of a couple of their albums i've listened to, they use a female singer who does a kind of opera thing in most of the songs, which I have a real hard time getting into. The reason I like raw metal is because of the growling vocalists do, can't really stand true voices in songs, and female opera is one of em :/

This might sound stupid since I'm wanting to listen to some more Stoner metal but I'll never get actually stoned in my life. :P Still, I know Ghoul wasn't particularly fond of Dopesmoker either so I'm not alone on the length concerns.

Granted, you do not need to be stoned to enjoy it but it helps.

That's convenient for me. :)

Or start with both at the same time. That reminds me, I will be wanting more Death sometime soon (or once Christmas is over) and the next album I'm thinking of getting is Individual Thought Patterns. Good album to go with next or should I get something else for the time being?

The Sound of Perseverance is amazing, but it's good to listen to the band as they progress in changing their sound. It's cool to listen to Scream Bloody Gore and then listen to Sound of Perseverance and note the extreme differences.

Okay, I checked out Death. Guess what? I loved them. But for some strange reason, I have had this compulsion to listen to all my Blue Oyster Cult CDs. Does anyone else like them, or get these strange urges? And tell me what albums of theirs do you think is the best. For me its a tossup between Spectres and Fire of Unknown Origin.

P.S. Before people start complaining about BOC's lack of being metal, they were one of the founding fathers, like Sabbath and Deep Purple.

I played the Brutal Legend demo, i like the soundtrack and the humor, but i'm still not going to buy it because i don't really like the combat system, and it seems like the type of game that i'd be done with in a pretty short amount of time. Its not like im able to buy every game i want, so i have to buy games that last.
Now the Bayonetta demo on the other hand, greatness.
