I never really understood that.

I know there are a lot of Jap bands that sing in Jap, and there are some folk bands that sing in their native languages but other than that why do all metal bands sing in english?

Not that i'm complaining, listening to the lyrics and deciphering their meabubg is one of the best parts of listening to a song.

English is more marketable, since it's a universal language. I guess English is the language of metal anyways, since it developed in the UK and was further developed by the USA (in general).

Lyrics come last to me. If they're good, they make the music a bit better. If they're crap, you still have the delivery and the rest of the music there. I'm liking Acid Bath's lyrics. I always thought the lyrics on Black Clouds and Silver Linings were quite shitty, but reading them I found they're not that bad. James sings them in a way that makes them cheesey and cliche'. DT need a new singer, haha.

Lol:

This record should have been two discs of fucking bad-ass metal shredding...instead, that fucking old fart redneck Jon Schaffer had to beat a bunch of flag-waving%uFEFF jingo horseshit into his dumbshit white trash audience, as if any of that fat, motorcycle-riding, dungeons-and-dragons-playing group of metalhead degenerates would ever quit their jobs at the Wawa, cancel their Warcraft accounts, and go to war in Iraq. Stick to singing songs about wizards and shit, you douchebags.

Pwnage. I'm not big on Iced Earth. In fact I already regret pausing Acid King to listen to three minutes of that.

I'm not either, the only Iced Earth album I really like to is The Glorious Burden. The rest of their music that i've heard is mih. Also I dislike Matt Barlow's voice outside of his work in Pyramaze.

Iced Earth are great live also.

And you can't forget how great Wizards & Demons are.

Other than that they are quite mih.

My taste in bm is varied. I like raw, melodic, avant-garde, hellenic, folk and post. I listen to a lot of black metal bands, I was big into the early Norwegian stuff when I started but now I really dig avant-garde stuff like Arcturus and Solefald. Rotting Christ and Varathron I've been getting into recently, I always liked Vintersorg's stuff, and Borknagar. Dawn and Dissection are great too. After doom/sludge, black metal is my favourite genre.

Grind I don't give a lot of my listening time to, but I enjoy it when it's done well. I like the punk influence and the speed, it makes for some kick arse music. I havn't really listened to any cyber grind or anything though. I'm a Napalm Death fan, that's about it.

Thrash is where I started when it came to metal music, so yeah, that layed out the ground work. I'm not a huge fan today, but i listen to Destruction, Kreator, Megadeth, Metallica, Sodom, Macabre, Bathory, Celtic Frost. I like 80's thrash, I've been meaning to explore it a bit more but sometimes I just prefer listening to more musically diverse and complex metal.

Power metal I don't listen to because I kind of prefer the darker side of metal. Sure, I was a Dragonforce fan like three years ago but that's about it. I've never listened to Blind Gaurdian or Symphony X.

I listen to a lot of progressive bands though like Borknagar, Opeth, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, the Baroness album is pretty progressive, and so are Rwake. Isn't it true most prog metal is linked with power? Maybe that's why I don't listen to a lot of prog.

So yeah, help me out if you want AniMetal.

Nile is a bit overwhelming before you get used to them. But.. I suggest you don't listen to the song Sarcophagus first. I did, and I hated it, and for a while, I hated Nile. Then I listened to Execration Text and liked them. But, yeah.. Annihilation of the wicked is good.

Funny you mentioned Sarcophagus since I listened to that song the other week and was like "Eh." I'll see about giving Annihilation of the Wicked a second chance. :)

Really? I think lyrics usually add a much more epic feel to a song.

I mean, I can't listen to ElvenKing. There instrumental is amazing and there vocals are good but the lyrics are so easy to understand from listening and they are downright HORRENDOUSLY out of place.

Like it'll be a happy speedy song and the lyrics will be about the Devil burning a village.

I mean, if songs follow this formula: Intro, Verse 1, Chrous X1, Verse 2, Chrous X2, Guitar/keyboard solos, Chrous X2/3, Extro.

Even though there are songs of that formula that work, a lot of time that is just annoying. Except in thrash metal, where it usually works itself out.

It's the same thing with lyrics to me.

Dark Tranquillity? Or Dream Theater? Cuz Mikael Stanne is great, even if the lyrics make almost no sense.

Oh jesus.

You should at least get that one album I said and should see them if they come on tour again. :P

After doom/sludge, black metal is my favourite genre.

Nice, i've been meaning to get into much more bands of those genres. I'd say Rotting Christ is my favorite black metal band and HoF is my favorite sludge. Recommandations of more stuff except the stuff you mentioned already would be nice. :)

I havn't really listened to any cyber grind or anything though. I'm a Napalm Death fan, that's about it.

Yeah, who doesn't love them? But don't get into cyber grind too much, besides awesome drums and bass everything about cyber grind sucks(Vocals, guitars and the lyrics, even if you don't care about them)

Yeah, besides the big ten or so famous thrash metal bands almost all thrash metal bands are really unfamous and so sort of hard to find.

Power metal I don't listen to because I kind of prefer the darker side of metal.

There is plenty of 'dark' power metal in terms of instrumental and lyrics. And hell, even in vocals.

Sure, I was a Dragonforce fan like three years ago but that's about it.

Haha who wasn't?

I've never listened to Blind Gaurdian or Symphony X.

You don't like or you just haven't gotten around to it?

Blind Guardian
Symphony X

My favorite song by each of those bands, luckily for you they are musically complicated and really dark

Mostly ALL prog metal bands aren't just prog, most prog bands are linked with at least one other genre.

But usually speaking, yes it is power metal.

So yeah, help me out if you want AniMetal.

I think you might like some bands like Wastefall, Beyond Twilight, Art 0f Simplicity, Zero Hour(New and old) and of course, you guessed it, symphony X(The Divine wings of Tragedy, The Odyssey and V are all great albums)

These are prog metal bands that are sort of powerie that are complicated, diverse and plenty of dark.

Yeah, I don't think Dark Tranquility are very good. Poppy melogay isn't it?

I think they're ok but it's hard for me to get into.

I beg to differ.

I beg to agree. In the 90's and hell even the early 2000's his voice was pretty likeable, since systematic chaos his voice has become really eew.

I think I would rather they got a new singer that sucked than keeping the old good singer until he fully sucked.

I've always maintained that earlier Iced Earth was great and majority of the stuff after it was pretty trashy but after listening to Burnt Offerings on the way to work the other day I've decided they've always been pretty bad. There's so many throwaway riffs on that album it's ridiculous.

The English speaking world invented Popular music. The Beatles, Elvis, Blues music, etc.
And Metal too, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Maiden.

It all either comes from the UK or US. So people in mainland Europe, Scandinavia who get into Popular music will have got in to it because of English speaking bands. So they'll have learnt that way.
Those who sing in their native tongue are just add their on patriotic touch or whatever.
