I'm thinking about buying a bass and an amp (150 watts). Is $800 a good price when starting to play and buying your first instrument?

Depends how serious you are about it.

I mean my first guitar was an acoustic and only costed me $30 and there are guitars out there worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

Well... you should guess that if I'm thinking about putting $800 on it... I'm kind of serious, don't you think :P

yup, but I'd like to go for an electric bass and I don't think I'll find anything for 30 bucks...

Shit yeah :D.
I like your attitude, getting a decent instrument straight away is so much more logical.

In fact the bass will only cost $200, the amp cost a lot more money though...

But should I get a bass with passive or active pick-ups ?

I'd rather spend more money on a bass than on an amp. A shit bass will sound bad through a good amp. A good bass will sound good through a good amp.

Realise that you still said good twice...
I got to have both, a good amp and a good bass, but I can't spend $2000 right away...
but 250 bucks is a good start don't you think?

Yes.

If I had $800 dollars to spend on a bass/amp I'd spend around $600 on the bass and the rest on an amp.

Also, for that much I bet you could get a real decent set up if you looked into the second hand market. Those words put people off but if the people have looked after them (and most musicians do, at least ones with good instruments) then the stuff you can get is quality.

You'd probably get a nice amount of change too :P. Think about it :).

I didn't mean it like that and you know it. :P

If you were going to try and become a bassist for like a band or something one day then yeah it's worth the investment.

But if you only want a bass just for playing around having fun with it at home without any real intentions of ever doing anything with it then it isn't worth spending that much.

But it looks to me you are serious, so w/e.

So I'm probably alone here but does anyone else feel like good lyrics are a complete rarity? It's hard to explain really and maybe I'm just being picky when it comes to this sort of thing but there are a lot of songs I hear that have a theme that could work well but it gets shit on either by being too straightforward leaving little to the imagination or they're too wordy. There's only a few bands I can think of off the top of my head who don't disappoint lyrically but I've got minor complaints sometimes for even some of the songs that those bands have made as well.

Inb4 "All I care about is the music, lyrics don't matter, if I wanted to a poem I'd read poetry, blah blah blahsuckmydick blah." I might enjoy a movie that's main draw is it's visuals but if that same movie also had a touching or thought provoking story to complement them suddenly it becomes something greater. I'd like the style AND the substance please.

Also I guess you could recommend bands with good lyrics. That would be cool.

I feel for you TnP. It's really hard to find bands whose lyrics are absolutely wonderful. I think Clutch's lyrics have been consistently well written and terrifically witty. However, most bands take it over the top or just find words that rhyme every other line which is terrible. I know a lot of bands don't even take their lyrics seriously, like the Melvins, whose lyrics are jibberish. No matter how much I love Devin Townsend, sometimes his lyrics don't work as well as they should (see Deep Peace).

Here I am, bored with everything.

Do you mean in metal or in general? For both I'd say that I agree, though.

Inb4 "All I care about is the music, lyrics don't matter, if I wanted to a poem I'd read poetry, blah blah blahsuckmydick blah."

I can't really understand lyrics, even when the vocalist sings very clearly, so lyrics have never been a huge problem for me. I can't think of any metal bands with really great lyrics (though i do love Electric Wizard and Sleep's lyrics.)

Response to Metal Hell 2009-06-09 22:31:58

TNP, Dystopia's lyrics are generally good. Mainly about abused and politics. I don't know if you read my post the other day but they're like Warning with the depression replaced by anger.

Ditto.
I never really pay attention to the lyrics, I sing along and I'm not saying I just don't listen, but I don't know, it never cuts through into my brain in a way that I'll understand the story/message or something.

There are obviously songs and bands whos lyrics are solid and I pay attention and enjoy the themes and message but these are the bands I overdose on and I've listened enough times so that I just know it all too well.

I can't think of any metal bands with really great lyrics (though i do love Electric Wizard and Sleep's lyrics.)

I love Wizard's lyrics just due to all the dope and Doom references.

This signature makes use of various clichés and/or 'emotional' lyrics/quotes, hopefully it makes me appear deep.

I've never been much of a lyrical person in metal or any form of music. It's always been a low priority for me since I always find the music itself to be much more important than the lyrics.

So Sonata Arctica are touring with Dragonforce this year.

Oh boy, watch them play for a half an hour and DF play for 3+ hours.

Seriously, has Sonata Arctica ever toured with a nonshitty band other than Nightwish back when they were good in '04?
