The problem I have with most death metal is the music is solely premised on the vocals, their are rarely guitar solos and such and the instrumental is just basic and boring.

You'd need many more years as an experienced guitarist, keyboardist, etc. to be able to play good power metal than you would need to play in a good death or black metal band.

In my opinion.

Power metal is awesome. I prefer the speed/power metal style of old Blind Guardian,

BG has constantly and always will be the most epic power metal band in existence.

It sucks that they don't plan on releasing a new album till late 2010 and don't plan on going on tour till mid 2011.

Oh will.

Iron Savior, and Grave Digger,

Amazing bands, i'm happy someone here knows who they are other than me and maybe Rokuro.

but I still listen to more flowery bands like Heavenly and Avantasia every so often.

Not my favorite type of power metal as well but still good listens every now and then.

In other news I have been getting into a lot of progressive rock lately, any recommendations? (I don't care that it's not metal.)

But thats because it'd be easier to find someone who can growl decently. Finding someone who can sing Power Metal would be a task and a half.

Necrophagist, Psycroptic, Nile, Craptopsy (when they were good), Demilich, Death, Opeth, Cynic, Gojira, Neuraxis, Arsis, Gonin-Ish all disagree with you.

Power Metal is easy to play... unless you're Angra or Symphony X.

Structurally, power metal is pretty simple. The chords change relatively slow, as one chord will be used for about two measures.

Depends on the song and/or band you are talking about.

I mean, is there any subgenre of any type of metal that's structure isn't simple?

Except for technical metal and technical death metal.

What's this bullshit about Power/Death/Black being easy to play?

I have tried all, and Black is by far the easiest, although still very difficult.

Death is next.

Power is by far the hardest. You can't fuck about with 3 chord riffs and simple song structure like in Black, and you can't turn the distortion up to 11 to disguise your mistakes.

Power Metal requirements:
1. At least 5 minutes in length.
2. At least one overly long guitar solo.
3. At least one tempo change.
4. Falsetto.
5. At least 1 chorus worth of harmonised vocals.

This is true in most genre's of metal, any band in metal that has an album entirely comprised with 3 minute long songs is most likely shit.

Lol punk metal.

Thrash metal and crossover thrash I suppose are the exceptions.

But even then they should still strive for 5+ minute long songs.

Most Power Metal songs I can pick up the songs with one (maybe two) sight reads. Maybe the solos will be a bit difficult but they're not on standard with Prog and Tech Death.
And the rhythms are usually piss easy.

Avant-Garde Metal.
I win that one :P.

At 2/21/09 01:51 PM, Centurion-Ryan wrote: I have tried all, and Black is by far the easiest, although still very difficult.

I think I'd have a lot of trouble writing Black Metal. I find it difficult to make fast riffs sound evil. And the drumming is harder than PM.

Power is by far the hardest. You can't fuck about with 3 chord riffs and simple song structure like in Black, and you can't turn the distortion up to 11 to disguise your mistakes.

You just get a nice, defined sound and play chords in the major scale.
PM is eaasssy.

Getting a singer will be hard, sure. But the guitar is basic. Drums are tough but not on the same level as Death/Black. And keyboards and solos are as hard as you want to make them. Look at Lost Horizon, nothing virtuosoy there, its all slow, catchy melodies.

When I wrote this post earlier I was also thinking about Death Metal... It is true that some death metal bands have crappy riffs... som people really think that death metal is only about being just heavy and br00tal. But it takes much more to make a good death metal band. Just like it takes much more than a few power chords do make a good power metal band.

The problem I have with most death metal is the music is solely premised on the vocals, their are rarely guitar solos and such and the instrumental is just basic and boring.

I don't. In fact I try give them a second chance whenever I don't like a band at first. That's what I did for Cryptopsy, and now their one of my most favorite bands.

...yes it is... I'm going to make a song with 5 power chords, use clean vocals and call it power metal. It will be shit power metal indeed... but power metal still.

Most power metal is just as hard to play as Progressive metal.

For me it was more my levels of tolerance for poor music... like where most people would be "Papa Roach, Linkin Park, POD, Puddle of Mudd, etc, etc are shit", I'd go "Yey :D. Everything is so blurry that I'm about to break. Cause I'm losing my mind and I... I feel so alive."
