I don't think there is any respect to be had from them. If you release a Greatest Hits then you're a cock in my opinion.

Greatest hits are good if you want to get into the band and you want to see if you like them, there shouldn´t be anymore than only one of them for each band though, and some extra songs would be good too.
Oh and its true that record companies often release them without even having a permission from the band.

Doesn't matter, we don't want to hear the same 15 or so songs over and over again.

I'll use Maiden as an example.

If I wanted to listen to The Trooper or Number of the Beast for the fifteen millionth time, I'd buy the fucking single.

Sticking Children of the Damned and Hallowed Be Thy Name somewhere in there does NOT excuse anyone from making the other 13 tracks ones we've all heard before.

I don't like that method of getting into a band. I find it deceitful. I'd rather just get what is generally considered their best album and get that. I think its better to hear songs in their correct context.
I actually bought Queensrÿche Greatest Hits a while ago and I've never had any desire to listen to it. I'm not saying I won't. But it's no something I plan to do any time.

I got Warning's 'The Strength to Dream' and gave it a spin. Unfortunately its not as good as their latter album. The vocal melodies are less interesting and the overall atmosphere isn't as haunting and depression as WFaD. I'm pretty confident it'll grow on me though as I play it more.

I´ve been getting into Gojira.
I´ve never listened to any death metal before, but the vocals aren´t incomprehensible growling and they have some great riffs.

If you want a fun somewhat Viking metal band give Nekrogoblikon a try. They're Goblin infulenced metal I suppose it could fit under the Viking genre. The vocals are well done (He sings like a Goblin) and all of their songs are enjoyable.

If thats whats stopping you trying Death Metal bands then get listening to Death. Chuck's vocals are great for understanding :).
But Gojira are sweet :). What have you got by them?

My take on Greatest Hits albums:

They make a lot more sense to be released AFTER a band has broken up.

From the consumer's standpoint, you've got a band who isn't making music anymore, but you don't want to commit to buying their stuff (since the bands who have Greatest Hits albums usually have a considerable discography). Therefore, you buy the GH, decide if you like them enough to buy their other stuff.

From the record company's standpoint, it makes sense because they've got a popular band that can be milked for more money.

You actually speak sense. Guns N' Roses' GH sold fucking loads.
Also, an active band releases Greatest Hits is just annoying. I've lost so much respect for Dream Theater because of it... well Mike Portnoy to be precise.

It's just weird. How can it be the Greatest Hits if they've got more stuff to produce? It can be interpreted as them thinking "oh hey, we suck now, might as well just admit it and release this."

Well it's actually called 'Greatest Hit and 21 other cool songs'. The greatest hit being Pull Me Under.
I think the mentality was more 'Hmm DragonForce and Trivium are getting very popular, lets try and market our band to those scenefags by choosing a bunch of songs that poorly represent the style of the band'.

It's Portnoy's fault, he wants too much.

From what i can remember of that article, i think it said something about Dave picking songs or something. Unless that was just for how he remastered everything again or whatever.

It's so unnecessary for Megadeth to release all these compilations. They released their greatest hits when they released Rust in Peace.

I don't know why,but I just love it so god damn much.
Also,
"From Mars to Sirius" is straight sex if you listen to it straight through whilst lying in bed or something of that sort.

Actually, the last album I got was Muse's Black Holes and Revelations. I do plan on get 'The Way of All Flesh" and The Faceless' "Planetary Duality" but also, am I right to categorize The Faceless under Tech Death?

I think the best greatest hits album I've seen was Unsung: the Best of Helmet. It has 21 songs, and about 60% of the songs weren't singles, thus if you wanted to get into some of the more obscure stuff, you could.

That's what I think, even though I never focus on getting Greatest Hits albums. I'll only get some if they have several extra stuff for the ones that have known the artist for a while now, but anything that has nothing new to offer, forget it. However, I'll make Queen an exception from that since they did their Greatest Hits albums very well.

Oh and its true that record companies often release them without even having a permission from the band.

Yeah, I wouldn't be happy if I was in a band and found out my record company was releasing compilation albums without my or bandmate's permission.

Now that's something I can agree with. They're a culmination of several genres, mixing all of them perfectly.
