god that reminds me of my old sixth form common room, there was a pretty decent stereo in there and every break time some crap was put on there and cranked to full blast, after a while me and my friends put some stuff on (i cant remember what, i think it was some In Flames) and had it at an acceptable volume and were told to "fuck off with this death metal shit" it was ultimate gay, although it is where my disgust for kanye west and 50 cent really took shape

There are quite a few actually. I'm liking the one I'm listening to right now - Blotted Science, a prog metal side project of Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse, I'm sure I brought them up before - and they formed in 2004. Every genre of music has its epochs, and the 80s and early 90s were insane, crammed with talent. But when you think about it, metal as a genre is barely 30 years old, and there really hasn't been a second cycle of greatness explosion since metal really got its legs. I will say that metal still gets a few bands that form each year that are of quality, you just have to find them. That's true for every genre. At least, I think so. :P

tl;dr: metal is a new genre, there has not been much time to reinvent it. Good bands are still coming down the line in fewer numbers, is all.

I know they descended into a cess-pool of mediocrity after Justice, but based on The New Song and The Other New Song (I know they won't be on the album) I'd say it will crush The Black Album, Load, ReLoad and Saint Anger with its ass.
