That question is: "How do you get Slug Mode, anyway? I tried starting a new game after beating my first playthrough to completion, but no Slug Mode."

Hmm, you should have gotten it by then =/ In fact, I'd call shenanigans if you got to the point where you restored Sun Snail. (But if you thought you needed a password, you got trolled.)
...You have to restore Sun Snail? That explains it then. 100% Map Completion and only 29/30 Fragments. Looks like I'm not doing any Slug Mode.
BTW, some boss tips for Moon Snail and Giga Snail.
When fighting Moon Snail, try to stay on the floor at all times. Don't even jump. Any time one of his cluster attacks comes flying at you, just go into Shell Shield and start shooting as soon as it hits you and passes by harmlessly. You shouldn't worry about damaging the Boss until he appears on the floor or low on one of the walls, at which point you should try to shoot him as many times as you can while he's shooting off a cluster attack. If you're right under him when he goes to the ceiling, well, that's a good opportunity to do some damage too. Try to shoot in his direction at all times, though, which requires moving around and shooting diagonally (which has the effect of destroying his boomerang attacks later on, too).
Giga Snail is a whole other matter. During his transitions between attack modes, just get on one of the walls (not right in the middle, but close to the middle). When he's in Red Mode, stay on the wall and go into Shell Shield at all times. You'll often have to go into Shield JUST as he's about to hit you later on. You can even use Shell Shield to weather his bullet-maze attack, allowing you to stay on a wall. And his ZZZ Snooze Attack can be blocked with Shell Shield too. Note that since you're on the wall, you can dodge his tricky attacks when he goes toward the floor/ceiling, then flips around and goes back the other way to fool you. In the end it's a war of attrition, but not as hard as that damned Space Box boss. :P
