I think that this game suffers from the Band Wagon effect. People are hating it because other people do, rather than taking their own view on the game.
If you can't think of at least one or two positive aspects of the new game, you're either suffering from this effect and/or you're a horribly stubborn person with a one-track mind.
You're entitled to your opinion, but please make sure that it is yours!
Either way, I quite enjoy the punishing aspect of Lastman. The game reminds me of others much like it, such as the Mario levels mentioned and I Wanna Be The Guy; a game so random and frustrating that it is considered hilariously so by its now massive fanbase.
And what is so cruel about rewarding the people who endure it? If someone gets those medals, you really can't discredit the person with "that game is too hard; the medals don't deserve to exist". That is just unfair to the people that do enjoy it and go out of their way to win.
