Best/Worst anime 2007-07-10 01:49:14

My two cents on the best and worst, in two parts due to the character limit.

Part one: The best

1. Ranma ½ (TV series, theatrical release, OVA): Sheer fucking bliss. That’s all I can say, sheer fucking bliss. It may be long (seven seasons), it may lack consistency (season one has the story, season two has the big laughs, season three is good for dumb giggles and the rest ranges from awesome to horrendous) and it may have one of the worst endings in anime history (not gonna spoil it), it’s so near and dear to my heart that I cannot deny it the title of greatest anime of all time. It’s funny as Hell, heartwarming and has badass kung-fu transsexuals. WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?!

2. Lupin The 3rd (TV series, theatrical release, OVA, TV special): Another long-runner that loses some of its quality as it goes on, but this one never loses its charm and nostalgia value. Based on a forty-year old manga epic about thief Arsène Lupin III and his gang (sultry Fujiko Mine, master gunfighter Daisuke Jigen and stoic samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII) Lupin The 3rd consists of three TV series plus a fuckload of motion pictures, OVAs and TV specials (one a year since the early 80s). The sheer volume of material is astounding. The best additions in this long-lived franchise are the second season (Lupin The 3rd: Part Two), The Castle of Cagliostro (DIRECTED BY MIYAZAKI, FOR FUCK’S SAKE!), and Return of The Magician (the 30th anniversary TV special, which hails the return of season one’s standout villain, Pycal).

3. Cowboy Bebop (TV series, theatrical release): Lupin The 3rd, except in space and more badass. Cowboy Bebop is a shorter, more dramatic take on the crime-comedy genre and heavy on badass jazz style. Fantastic music, great dialogue and memorable characters make this classic unforgettable. Another thing worth noting is the amazing cast of villains. Abdul Hakim, the badass black thief (even though his blackness merely comes from plastic surgery), Mad Pierrot, a morbidly obese serial killer with the mind of a child, Domino Walker, a laid-back drug dealer a lot of enemies, and (in the movie) Vincent Volaju, a nigh-invincible ex-Marine who may or may not have died several years ago.

4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV series): Epic mindfuck or straightforward comedy? Depending on what order you watched it in, it could go either way. Whether you watched it in broadcast order, Kyon order (chronological) or DVD order (Kyon order with one deviation), you saw the damn finest anime of the past seven years. Funny, smart and easy on the eyes, the totally epic light novel series gets a very fitting adaptation in this 14 episode masterwork. Real bonus points for the great music and epic casting (Aya Hirano, motherfuckers, AYA HIRANO!!!!).
5. Urusei Yatsura (TV series, theatrical release, OVA): Long as fuck and well-worth enduring every second, Urusei Yatsura is all over the place. Dumb comedy (the TV series), epic-level musical (Only You), mind-warping Nietzsche-inspired drama (Beautiful Dreamer), IT HAS EVERYTHING!!! Sort of Japan’s equivalent of The Simpsons, it’s loaded with memorable characters (Onsen-Mark deserves special mention for being the most inept schoolteacher in the history of fiction) and outlandish humor. Sadly, since Rumiko Takahashi created it, it has a shit ending.

6. Hellsing (TV series, OVA): VAMPIRES, CATHOLIC PRIESTS, NAZIS, OH MY! Sure, the TV series lost its awesome after episode 7, but the OVA series definitely glosses over that failure. The plot is pretty silly at its core (Dracula fights religious freaks, then he fights Nazi vampires), but it still has a strange appeal. The combination of brutal violence, eccentric humor (we’re talking “fucked-up” eccentric) and a dark moody style works perfectly. While the TV show was weak on plot, the music is nothing short of amazing. The OVA has a much weaker score (Classical plus electronica? Ick.), but makes up for it in the animation department. The character design in both series is great, but the animation in the TV version is weak and the gore is greatly sanitized. Complaints aside, the entertainment value of both versions is undeniable. Plus, MUHFUGGIN’ DRACULA IS THE MAIN CHARACTER!!!!

7. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV series, OVA): Political intrigue, melodrama and loads of big fucking explosions. Those things are synonymous with the Gundam franchise. Of the two billion or so series in the franchise, this one stands out as the best. Lots of twists, turns and angry politicians in this one. Nary a dull moment, too. Fine mech battles, and the Endless Waltz OVAs stand out as damn near perfect. The one fault of the series is the fact it obsessively follows the Gundam formula (reluctant hero with the most badass Mobile Suit of all battles Aryan nemesis with a mask).

8. Macross (TV series, theatrical release): A vicious slap to the face of kids in the 80s, Macross first made it over here as the first season of Robotech (an epic syndicated series combining three unrelated animes) and despite some mild editing, it was still pretty intense. People died (and stayed dead), most of humanity perished and the villains were certainly more menacing then evil but silly characters like G.I. Joe’s Cobra Commander. That said, there’s still goofy comic relief and some silly bollocks (as expected from 80s cartoons), but there are a few episodes that could easily out-grim any cartoon these days. Macross is also notable for its awesome soundtrack and “Do You Remember Love?”, which is probably one of the most kickass movies ever. (SEX IN ZERO GRAVITY).

9. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (OVA): An elderly Brit, his half-Japanese grandson, an Egyptian fortune teller, a former slave of the old Brit’s grandfather’s arch-nemesis, a klutzy Frenchman and a tiny dog travel all over the world in an attempt to end the life of the aforementioned baddie, uber-powerful vampire Dio Brando. If you’re already confused, then JJBA is not for you. Bizarre, ultraviolent and incredibly entertaining if you can take the weirdness and music references (a lot of characters are named after musicians, bands and albums). The fight scenes play out like Dragon Ball Z on acid (psychic ghosts for bodyguards > energy attacks) and are beautifully animated.

10. R.O.D. (TV series, OVA): What happens when you take a top-notch writer (the legendary Hideyuki Kurata), get him to write an outlandish plot, give it a really big budget and then turn it into a three episode straight-to-video series and 26 episode follow-up TV series? Madness, and/or the R.O.D. saga (which stands for both “Read or Die”, the title of his novel/manga series about British papermaster Yomiko Readman and Read or Dream, its spin-off about three amateur detectives who also happen to be papermasters). The OVAs are a loose adaptation of the Read or Die novels with a great added twist (re-animated historical figures as villains, which is much more badass than you’d think) and the TV series is like the bastard child of the Read or Die manga and Read or Dream (same cast as both series, but with an original story and minor changes to characters). Both provide beautiful animation, ridiculously cool music (reminds one of the James Bond films) and really fucking weird stories (Beethoven composes a symphony that makes people kill themselves, plus there’s a vampire that can control sound waves to cause psychical injury , Genai Hiraga blows up the White House, etc.).

HOLY **** I didn't even hear of those shows until just now.

Nothing here anymore.

Part two: The worst

1. Elfen Lied (TV series, OVA): Glorified child pornography with ultraviolence and a lame sense of humor as written by a 13-year-old obsessed with “deep philosophy”, Elfen Lied is the epitome of bad anime. Loaded with blood and guts, painfully unfunny gross-out/OMG TITFLASH jokes, an offensively bad story (using rape, incest, you name it to create a completely incoherent story with all the drama and likeability of low-grade fanfiction), and enough lolicon fanservice to make one want to gouge their eyes out after seeing the millionth underaged breast, I honestly don’t see how this in any way can be taken seriously or considered intelligent. If the whole bloody affair was played for laughs with no attempts at a serious story, it could very well be considered entertaining, but it takes itself so seriously that most times even trying to laugh at it will inspire thoughts of suicide. Do yourself a favor and avoid it.

2. Inuyasha (TV series, theatrical release): Dull as fuck fantasy series that goes nowhere plotwise. Inuyasha plays out the bastard child of every other Rumiko Takahashi series (same character designs, same character types, seen-it-before plot devices), Fushugi Yugi (which was actually good) and Dragon Ball Z (repetitive as fuck, often stupid, but not nearly as entertaining as DBZ was). It manages to rip through the first season without too much re-hashing and filler, but by the time the second season starts, you want to give it a wide pass. The road from episode one to episode one hundred sixty-seven is a long and boring one, and the cliffhanger ending will leave you wanting to punch your TV.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (theatrical release): The manga I loved, the TV series I tolerated, but the movies….oh man, the movies, fuck no. Neon Genesis Evangelion has had a reputation as the best anime of all time (according to such credible sources as MTV, who clearly have people on staff that have seen ever anime ever made), NEWSFLASH, it ain’t. It was a decent TV series, with a great manga (and even better spin-off), but then they made it into two awful motion pictures. Death and Rebirth is a feature-length clipshow barely worth watching (plus it spoils the first chunk of its sequel) and End of Evangelion is a trainwreck almost on par with Elfen Lied when it comes to gratuitous violence, mind-boggling poor story and unnecessary sexual content (masturbating over coma patients = bad). Bonus points of the scale of epic fail for EoE’s failed attempt at ironic contrast with the lyrically grim “Hey Jude” rip-off “Komm Susser Todd”.

4. Naruto (TV series, theatrical release, OVA): Mercilessly derivative, uninteresting and long as fuck, Naruto is insanely popular for reasons unknown and infects the anime community like a plague. The TV series starts out tolerable, but soon drowns under the million or so plotless filler episodes, not to mention the actual story itself is so fucking unoriginal that it hurts. Unlikable douchebag kid dreams of being a great ninja, a few people have faith in him because of his great hidden power, he battles a lot of really shitty stereotypical opponents, so on, so forth. The movies certainly don’t help its case either, since the stories are worse (but I must admit the animation in the first film is damned amazing).

5. Tenjou Tenge (TV series): It could have been a passable action anime, but then they just had to pile on the bullshit. I’ve never, ever seen an action series that consists mostly of flashbacks and conversations as opposed to random violence and silly rivalry stories. It began as an unimpressive shonen series with plenty of fanservice (though not nearly as much as the manga’s nasty and unpleasant pseudo-hentai stuff) and some really uninspired character designs, but as it when on it just got worse.

6. Gad Guard (TV series): Dullest mech series I’ve ever seen, I can honestly only remember around half of one episode of this shitstorm and it was not fun to watch. I’m not exactly a /m/ fan, but I certainly know a bad series when I see one, and this one takes the cake. It lacks memorable characters, over-the-top shouting and epic space battles, in short: it’s scarcely a /m/ series at all. The story escapes me, and when I can’t even remember the vaguest thing about a series plot, that’s a sign of how bad it is.

7. Dragon Ball GT (TV series, TV special): WHY, AKIRA, WHY?! As a huge fan of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, I was very eager to see GT. I waited AGES for it to get dubbed and picked up on Canadian TV, and I didn’t enjoy it in the least. At least the Canadian dub is superior and unaltered (FUNimation raped the script and episode order in the States). It suffers due to lack of source material (no manga to base it off, unlike the two previous series), shortness (64 episodes, not even a scratch on the previous series) and the simple fact that people have had enough Dragon Ball for one lifetime. It’s an unnecessary sequel with no real appeal.

8. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (TV series): The nine-billionth Gundam series, SEED is almost as fun as a root canal (and if you watched the mega-censored version aired on American TV, equally as painful). Not only does it have all the generic Gundam basics (political intrigue, a whiny hero, Aryan villain with a mask), it also has at least eight spin-offs and some really awful character designs (WIDE FACES). Words cannot describe how much this series is inferior to others in the Gundam franchise.

9. Final Fantasy Unlimited (TV series): Narcolepsy-inducing and only scarcely related to the also boring videogames, FFU proves that not only do games make for bad inspiration for films, they make shitty TV shows too. Poorly labeled a “seinen” series by Wikipedia (children would probably get a kick out of this, but 18-30 year olds? Fuck no.), this series was so poor that its expected TV run was carved in half (and then some) due to poor ratings and bad critical reception.

10. Love Hina (TV series): An awful adaptation of a decent manga, it was so unfunny (unfunny even by harem anime standards) and weak on fanservice (especially when compared to its source) that it barely even warrants a watch just to see how bad it is. You could do worse, but not by much.

I totally agree with you that Gundam Wing (probably my favourite too) and Ranma ½ are awesome. I can only agree with those ones though because I haven't seen any of the others.

I also agree with you when you say DB GT sucked. It was no where near as good as DBZ, and was really gay. Naruto also sucks. A bunch of my friends love it, despite the fact that it sucks. I haven't seen any of the others.

Have you seard of The Guyver? That's one of the only other animes I'm really a fan of.

I'll be sure to check out and ignore these. Maybe.

Gundam wing was the only gundam series I liked. It was filled with awesomenes.

Ranma 1/2 was pretty good, but not that interesting enough to be the best. Transvestites can only have a series be fun for so long.

Fullmetal should be somewhere on your best list.

now time to watch some new anime.....

At 7/10/07 01:49 AM, Gendo wrote: My two cents on the best and worst, in two parts due to the character limit.

Part one: The best

1. Ranma ½ (TV series, theatrical release, OVA):

I still haven't bothered to watch that series, it's not at my local video store to my knowledge, so it may be a bit before I can work up to watching it. Though it may be some time before I can work up to watching a long series like that.

2. Lupin The 3rd (TV series, theatrical release, OVA, TV special):

I saw Castle of Cagliostro, when I was going through my completing-all-Miyazaki-films phase, and it was decent enough. Maybe I'll get around to watching the series.

3. Cowboy Bebop (TV series, theatrical release):

I'd move this one up to number one, but that's just my personal preference.

4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV series):

I watched this series in the order it was broadcasted in, it seems more fun that way. Especially considering the episodes that are way ahead have random nods to the following episodes (like the piles of computers that it shows before they get them). Also, of course, you get a refreshing selection of one-off's in between the crazy story.

5. Urusei Yatsura (TV series, theatrical release, OVA):

Here's one I haven't actually heard of, but with a shit ending, I don't know if I can sit through nearly 200 episodes.

6. Hellsing (TV series, OVA):

The OVA is awesome so far, but the series had a pretty crap villain when Incognito showed up.

7. Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV series, OVA):

I've only seen a few episodes of this, but giant robots sort've intrigues me.

8. Macross (TV series, theatrical release):

More giant robots! Gundam Wing would probably satisfy my curiosity for them if I'm wanting t o star a new series.

9. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (OVA):

WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

10. R.O.D. (TV series, OVA):

I almost got out the OVA of this at some point, I don't remember what stopped me.

Where's the love for Paranoia Agent and Trigun, then?

Well I suppose if I compiled a 'best' list, I'd write it a bit differently.

Part two: The worst
1. Elfen Lied (TV series, OVA):

Child pornography you say? I am so checking this one out.

2. Inuyasha (TV series, theatrical release):

I watched the first few episodes, and got bored of it. When I checked out a later episode on Adult Swim, it looked awful.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (theatrical release):

Never even bothered with it.

4. Naruto (TV series, theatrical release, OVA):

Watched the first few episodes, it was horrible.

5. Tenjou Tenge (TV series):

Heard of it, and heard enough crap about it to stop me from watching it.

6. Gad Guard (TV series):

Never even heard of it.

7. Dragon Ball GT (TV series, TV special):

I've only seen an episode or so of the FUNimation one, it is terrible.

8. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (TV series):

I watched an episode of this when I was waiting for something else to come on, it bored the hell out of me.

9. Final Fantasy Unlimited (TV series):

Horrid series, I couldn't even get through the first episode. I don't find the games boring though. I suppose the lack of action in them isn't for everybody.

10. Love Hina (TV series):

Never even wanted to try.

These probably aren't the worst anime's ever, considering those probably weren't dubbed or subbed or anything.

Well I've seen 16 out of 20 of those. Yep, everything in the right place.

Problem with Elfen Lied was that it was only 12 damn volumes that went from 2002-2005, and they made an anime from 2004-2004 again! They end it before they even get to explain lots of things. That would be like Cowboy Bebop ending before Spike gets to take on the Syndicate/Vicious again!

13 episodes was enough for me though, I didn't feel like going to the manga for more.

Elfen Lied only needs to be brought up when someone wants a violent AND disturbing anime.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure had more gore anyways. People have GUTS! They aren't solid chunks of meat.

I still have no clue why they were shooting the girls with metal balls. Probably some future weapon potential.

Time to whore out Slayers again for top anime!
